A case of glycogen-rich adenocarcinoma of the parotid gland of a 23 years old man was investigated ultrastructually. The cytoplasm of the tumour cells was abundantly filled with glycogen-rich particles. Among these particles well developed cytoplasmic organelles were observed, too. In addition, another tumour all type could be found, i.e. a tumour cell of basal cell origin with tonofibris in the cytoplasm, attached to the glycogen-rich tumour cell type by desmosomes.
A rare case of a neurinoma of the left facial nerve was investigated on the electron microscopic level. The tumor developed in a 27 years old man and induced a facial paresis by nerve compression. Ultrastructurally the tumour cells were characterized by markedly notched nuclei and a well developed organized cytoplasm with multiple organelles (lysosomes, Golgi's complex, mitochondria, rough endoplasmic reticulum). Fibroblasts were frequently observed in the interstice. So-called "long spacing collagen" was not detected in the interstice. The arrangement of the tumour cells represents the Antoni A type.
1. Angiostrongylus cantonensis contains a glucokinase which was isolated by DEAE-cellulose column chromatography. 2. This enzyme has a much higher affinity toward glucose (apparent Km, 0.2 mM) than fructose (apparent Km, 85 mM). Glucose-6-phosphate (10 mM) does not inhibit glucose phosphorylation. 3. Molecular weight obtained by a molecular sieve chromatography (60,000) is also close to the value of mammalian glucokinase. 4. While Vmax value for mannose is one-third smaller than that for glucose, Km for mannose is rather lower than that for glucose. 5. In addition to the cytosol enzyme, a particle bound hexokinase is found in the worm.
Under the electronmicroscope we observed a case of an acinic cell tumor of the left parotid gland. The patient was a 63-year-old woman who has suffered three times from local recurrences. The cytoplasma of the tumor cells showed the well-organized mitochondria, rouch endoplasmic reticula, Golgi's complexes and other organellas. Especially the cytoplasmas of the tumor cells, which formed acinus-like lumens, contained various-shaped secretory granules in great numbers. In addition, pycnotic-nucleated oncocytes with secretory granules could be observed.
Bovine parainfluenza virus type 3 (PIV-3) has a buoyant density of 1.197. The RNA of PIV-3, like that of Sendai virus, is a single continuous chain which lacks polyadenylic acid sequences and tends to self-anneal to a marked extent. It has a sedimentation coefficient of 42S and a molecular weight of 4.5 X 10(6), being slightly smaller than Sendai virus RNA (47S, 5.3 X 10(6)). PIV-3 has 5 main structural proteins, of which 2 are glycoproteins. The molecular weights of protein 1, protein 2, protein 3, glycoprotein 1, and glycoprotein 2 were estimated to be 79,000, 68,000, 35,000, 69,000, and 55,000, respectively. Protein 2 was suggested to be nucleocapsid protein.

The survey data of microfilarial periodicity of 2 species of filariae Brugia malayi at 4 localities, Mahang and Lampihong in South Kalimantan, Bengkulu in South Sumatra, Palolo in Central Sulwesi, and the species of Brugia timori at 2 localities, Flores and Alor Islands in Nusa Tenggara were analysed by using Aikat and Das's modified statistical method. Nine cases at Mahang and five cases at Lampihong were recognized as same group of non-periodic B. malayi and 1 case at Mahang was considered to be nocturnal subperiodic B. malayi by their parameters estimated by the wave equation, the amplitude (a), the peak hour of microfilaria density (k) the periodicity index (D) and the test of equality for comparison of two series of data. The data of 9 cases from Bengkulu and 11 cases from Palolo were similarly analysed and recognized as the nocturnal periodic type of B. malayi. The data of 5 cases from Flores Island and 5 cases from Alor Island were also recognized as the nocturanal periodic type of B. timori. Thus, in these observations the non periodic strain of Brugia malayi was detected in South Kalimantan. Further studies on the principal vectors and their bionomics should be carried out.

On the assumption that a rise in the pancreatic type isoamylases may not necessarily indicate underlying pancreatitis, genetic studies of human serum and urinary amylase isoenzymes have been performed with the use of electrophoresis. Although the preponderant increase in the two principal pancreatic isoamylases Amylase-1 and 2 has been accepted to be a specific index of pancreatic involvement, 1.68% of normal persons had Amylase-2 with an elevated amylase activity (named "Dominant Amylase-2") up to the same levels as the major isoenzymes. Results of pancreozymin-secretin test and other laboratory findings of these persons with Dominant Amylase-2 were all within normal ranges. Pedigree studies confirmed an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance for this variant. The important of serial determination and pedigree investigations has been shown to distinguish normal persons having Dominant Amylase-2 from patients with pancreatitis without elevated amylase activity. The existence of an inherited trait of pancreatitis-like isoamylase pattern in healthy individuals must be born in mind before coming to a conclusion when amylase isoenzymes are used for clinical medicine, though preponderance of the pancreatic type isoenzymes in serum and urine has been revealed to be a characteristic finding in pancreatitis. Knowledge of amylase genetic polymorphism provides a scientific basis for amylase isoenzyme interpretation.
Mutarotation of products from p-nitrophenyl beta-D-cellobioside and cellopentaitol by two different types of exo-cellulases from Trichoderma viride was investigated. It was found that an exo-cellulase of glucosidase type produced from the former substrate D-glucose which was mutarotated in a downward direction, while another exo-cellulase of Avicelase type produced from the latter substrate cellobiose which was mutarotated in an upward direction.
A cellulase component of Avicelase type was obtained from Driselase, a commercial enzyme preparation from a wood-rotting fungus Irpex lacteus (Polyporus tulipiferae). It showed a single band on SDS-polyacrylamide electrophoresis. The amino acid composition of this cellulase resembled those of cellulase components of endo-type from the same fungus. However, it produced exclusively cellobiose from CMC as well as from water-insoluble celluloses such as Avicel or cotton at earlier stages of hydrolysis. In addition, the hydrolysis of CMC practically stopped after an initial rapid stage. The cellulase showed a strong synergistic action with an endo-cellulase of higher randomness (typical CMCase-type) in the hydrolysis of CMC as well as Avicel. In contrast to cellotriose and -tetraose, cellopentaose and -hexaose were attacked very rapidly, and only cellobiose was produced. These results suggest that the cellulase is an exo-type component. However, it mutarotated the products from cellopentaitol in the same direction as endo-cellulases. it represented a relatively large portion of the total cellulase activity, and may play an important role in the degradation of native cellulose in vivo.

We carried out an experiment on a medical information system in which a clinical data base is combined organically with computer programs for automated diagnosis. In this system, the parameters for automated diagnosis are devised to be renewed as the contents of the data base (patient's information) increase. This system can be regarded as a data base possessing a kind of diagnosing ability which grows up with time. We have named this system "Intelligent Data Base". The algorithm for computer diagnosis used in this study is based on maximum likelihood method, and each likelihood is weighted with a prior probability of each disease. The discrimination efficiency of this method is logically equal to that of the Bayes rule. First 27 cases were learnt by the system and correct diagnosis was obtained in 78% of the cases. When cases for learning increased to 82, the percentage of correct diagnosis was improved to 95%.
