[The effects of chronic methamphetamine and single haloperidol injections on thiamine and its phosphate ester levels in the rat brain].

The effects of chronic methamphetamine administration (10 mg/kg, ip) on thiamine and its phosphate esters in the rat brain were studied. Thiamine triphosphate (TTP) decreased significantly in correlation to the stereotyped behavior. However, thiamine, thiamine monophosphate (TMP) and thiamine diphosphate (TDP) did not change significantly. In the chronic methamphetamine intoxicated rat, TMP and TDP decreased immediately after a single haloperidol injection (10 mg/kg, ip), and the level of TDP decreased significantly TTP in the brain, however, did not change for 60 minutes. Further studies on the relationship between biogenic amines and TTP which is supposed to be a neuroactive agent would be required.

Semisynthesis and biological properties of the [B24-leucine]-, [B25-leucine[- and [B24-leucine, B25-leucine]-analogues of human insulin.

Trypsin-catalyzed coupling of porcine desoctapeptide-insulin with synthetic octapeptides produced the [LeuB24]- (I), [LeuB25]- (II) and [LeuB24, LeuB25]- (III)analogues of human insulin. I, II and III displayed respectively 20--30%, 1--2% and 0.5% of the receptor binding activity of the normal hormone. Biological activities of these analogues seemed to be proportional to their binding potencies when assayed in vitro, while in an in vivo assay analogue I was fully active and II exhibited 10--20% of normal activity. III was less active than II in all assays tested.

Computation of motion direction by quail retinal ganglion cells that have a nonconcentric receptive field.

One type of retinal ganglion cells prefers object motion in a particular direction. Neuronal mechanisms for the computation of motion direction are still unknown. We quantitatively mapped excitatory and inhibitory regions of receptive fields for directionally selective retinal ganglion cells in the Japanese quail, and found that the inhibitory regions are displaced about 1-3 deg toward the side where the null sweep starts, relative to the excitatory regions. Directional selectivity thus results from delayed transient suppression exerted by the nonconcentrically arranged inhibitory regions, and not by local directional inhibition as hypothesized by Barlow and Levick (1965).

Primary position upbeat nystagmus localizing value.

Primary position upbeat nystagmus has been associated predominantly with lesions of the midbrain, midline cerebellum, and lower brainstem. However, the precise localization still remains unclear. We report one case of primary position upbeat nystagmus in which magnetic resonance imaging showed probable bilateral lesions of the prepositus hypoglossi nuclei. Morphological and physiological studies have shown that this nucleus plays important roles in vertical eye movements. We conclude that the dysfunction of bilateral prepositus hypoglossi nuclei causes the upbeat nystagmus in our patient.
