Between January 1985 and December 1988 41 patients with clinically suspected osteomyelitis were examined by MRI. All cases were proved either by surgery or by clinical follow-up. Evidence of osteomyelitis on MRI consisted of abnormalities of the bone marrow with decreased signal intensity on T1-weighted images and increased signal intensity on T2-weighted images. Other abnormalities such as degeneration of the intervertebral disc, fatty degeneration of the muscles and thickening of tendon sheaths with fluid were also seen on the same images. The sensitivity of the MRI for the diagnosis of osteomyelitis was 100%, the specificity was 86% and the accuracy 96%. We conclude that MRI is a reliable method in diagnosing osteomyelitis because of its high sensitivity and high specificity.
A clinically realistic experiment was set up to obtain information on the amount of vertical settling of clasp rests in amalgam restorations under functional loading. Mesioocclusal cavities were prepared in 16 lower molar specimens cast in brass. The cavities were filled with amalgam and provided with a mesial rest seat. A constant load of 100 N was applied via a simplified (experimental) saddle to a cobalt-chromium E-clasp cast to the saddle. The duration of the load corresponded to 160 days of clinical function. The chronological course of vertical displacement was analyzed mathematically. According to this result the process can be divided into three components: settling immediately upon load initiation (mean value 96 microns, transition creep (mean value 25 microns) and creep ata constant rate (mean value 15 microns). The mean overall vertical displacement of the rests was 136 microns, the maximum value 287 microns. These findings suggest that vertical settling of a clasp rest into its seat in an amalgam restoration may eventually result in significant changes in occlusion and may almost completely exhaust gingival resilience.

The currently known classifications for partially edentulous arches lack completeness of major findings relevant for planning prosthodontic therapy. A classification to assess the remaining function of the partially endentulous arch will be proposed, based on the number of teeth and position and length of the interdental connections.
Buffycoat free red cell concentrates were stored at 4 degrees C for 42 days in CPD-A1 and two new red cell preservation solutions, PAGGS-Sorbitol and SAG-Mannitol. The rheological behaviour of the red cells was measured by viscometry of red cell suspensions (hematocrit 45%) at steady flow at various intervals during the storage period. The viscoelastic properties of the red cells were studied at oscillatory flow using an oscillation rheometer. The deformability of the red cells during storage was determined by measurement of the viscosity of hard packed cells at steady flow. The results show better red cell deformability during the entire storage period using the new solutions PAGGS-Sorbitol or SAG-Mannitol compared to the standard blood bank preservation solution CPD-A1.

Eleven patients with persistent Stage III ovarian cancer, documented at second look laparotomy, received i.p. human recombinant interferon-alpha (5-50 x 10(6) units/week). Prior to immunotherapy, patients' peritoneal cell lymphocytes (PCLs) contained decreased proportions of Leu-7+ and Fc-receptor+ cells and almost nondetectable natural killer (NK) and antibody-dependent cell cytotoxic (ADCC) activity. In contrast, patients' peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) contained normal proportions of lymphocyte subsets and cytotoxic activity compared to control donor PBLs. During therapy, there was a concurrent increase in PCL Leu-7+ cells and NK lysis. Both peaked predictably at 24 h after each treatment, regardless of the dose injected, and usually returned to baseline by Day 7 of each weekly cycle. PCL NK enhancement was striking, usually increasing from 2-6% (effector:target ratio, 25:1) to over 30% lysis. Enhancement of PCL ADCC was less impressive. PCLs of several patients developed lytic activity towards NK-resistant Raji targets. During therapy, patients' PBLs demonstrated: (a) modestly enhanced NK lysis at Day 4 of each cycle, and; (b) no development of Raji lysis. These data clearly demonstrate the efficacy of i.p. interferon in activation of peritoneal NK activity. However, increased NK lysis did not correlate with individual tumor responses in this cohort of patients.
It has been previously demonstrated that MRI can show the knee joint non-invasively and without radiation. Forty-two patients with lesions of the knee were examined using 1.5 Tesla and flexible surface coils. The findings were compared with those of arthroscopy, arthrography and, where possible, with those at surgery. For the evaluation of cruciate ligament injuries, MRI proved to have a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 82% with an overall accuracy of 92%. Thirty-nine cruciate ligaments were correctly evaluated. Three times a false positive diagnosis was made. Examination of the menisci was less reliable. Sensitivity was 88% and specificity was 83% with an overall accuracy of 94%. Fifteen meniscus lesions were correctly diagnosed. Three times a false positive and twice a false negative diagnosis was made. Four of the five incorrect diagnoses concerned the posterior horn of the meniscus and three were situated laterally.
Noninvasive parameters are desirable to assess viability of preimplantation embryos. The objective of the present study was to investigate how noninvasive morphometric criteria are related to invasive metabolic parameters. In Day 4 and 5 noncultured and Day 4 in vitro-cultured rabbit blastocysts, diameters as well as DNA or protein synthesis (by incorporation of tritiated precursors) were measured. From the diameter of the blastocyst, total volume of embryonic cells was calculated and used for statistical analysis. In noncultured controls, cellular volume and thymidine, leucine, or methionine incorporation were highly correlated, with coefficients of correlation ranging between 0.7 and 0.9. The calculated equations of regression were linear. Blastocysts cultured for 24 or 48 h in medium supplemented with uterine flushings showed comparable coefficients of correlation and regression. After culture in serum-supplemented medium, however, a less close relationship was found, with statistically significant lower coefficients of correlation and regression. Our results demonstrate the following: (1) There is a close relationship between blastocyst diameter and metabolic criteria in noncultured rabbit blastocysts, indicating that simple measurement of the diameter of a useful tool for assessment of blastocyst metabolic activity. (2) In cultured blastocysts, however, measurement of diameter is of doubtful validity due to a substantially altered embryonic metabolism in vitro. (3) Blastocysts cultured in medium that contained uterine flushings maintained normal expansion and metabolic activity for some time.
