Competencies for health management practice: a practitioner's perspective.

The current health care environment will require executive leadership with a new set of management competencies to effectively lead and manage the various components of a restructured health care delivery system. The traditional management skills of planning, organizing, directing, controlling, and staffing resources will remain relevant, but the true measure of professional success will be the development of conceptual skills. This means the ability to look at the health care enterprise as a whole, and recognize how changes in the environment shape your strategic mission, goals, and objectives. The successful health care leader will have a demonstrated ability to apply these conceptual skills to the development of information systems and integrated networks that position their organization to accept capitated risks. This paper examines the United States and Canadian health care systems from the perspective of both the more traditional hospital and the emerging medical care organizations. New importance of the team approach to leadership and management and all that entails is stressed.

Caring for the terminally ill: one hospital's self-assessment and solutions.

Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto established a committee for the total care of the terminally ill in order to evaluate the care currently being provided for such patients. Information was collected mostly by questionnaire; and subsequent programs, such as a consultation team to assist all hospital staff dealing with terminally ill patients, are being implemented.

Blackout! Are you prepared?

Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Ontario, found itself stranded without electrical power for one hour when a transformer blew up in an Ontario Hydro station and hospital emergency generators failed due to inadequate ventilation. This article discusses the impact of the power loss in a facility that relies on sophisticated technology and equipment. Because the article describes the actions that were taken following the incident and presents the audit that has been developed, it may be used by other facilities to assess preparedness and develop improvement plans.

Focus on risk management.

With the Canadian Council of Health Facilities Accreditation's introduction of new standards on risk management in 1991, many health care facilities in Canada are re-evaluating their risk-management programs. This article outlines how Toronto's Mount Sinai Hospital established new objectives and developed administrative structures to consolidate and improve its risk-management practices.
