Mast cells in parathyroid glands of hyperparathyroidism.

Parathyroid glands from cases of hyperparathyroidism have been examined with particular attention to mast cells. In ;normal' glands accompanying an adenoma they were common, although there was a wide range in their frequency, whereas in pathological tissue, both adenoma and hyperplasia, mast cells were scarce. This difference between glands was examined with respect to alterations in gland size, to variations in the amount of interstitial tissue, to degrees of overactivity, and to anatomical development of the glands. No conclusions can be drawn with regard to the significance of mast cells in parathyroid tissue.

Amyloid in normal and pathological parathyroid glands.

Two groups of parathyroid glands have been examined for intrafollicular amyloid. In glands removed surgically it was found in nine cases (16%); in glands removed at necropsy it was found in 23 cases (46%). Also, two postmortem cases of systemic amyloidosis showed involvement of parathyroid glands with an entirely different distribution of amyloid. Compared with other amyloids the tinctorial properties of the intrafollicular amyloid were uniform in reactions with Congo red and Thioflavin T, but the intensity of the staining reaction for amino acids tryptophan and tyrosine was not constant for the follicle amyloid. This variation may be a feature of a maturation process but the derivation of this amyloid remains uncertain.

Plasminogen-activator-producing tumour.

In a patient with giant-cell carcinoma of the lung a secondary tumour deposit in the arm was incised and bled for three weeks. Investigations showed the tumour to be rich in plasminogen activator. Haemostasis in the tumour was achieved with aminocaproic acid therapy. For a period the plasminogen-activator properties were retained in cell culture of the tumour.

Sporulation of Marteilioides branchialis n. sp. (Paramyxea) in the Sydney rock oyster, Saccostrea commercialis: an electron microscope study.

The ultrastructure of sporulation of a new parasite, Marteilioides branchialis (Paramyxea), in the Sydney Rock oyster, Saccostrea commercialis, is described. The development is typical of other Paramyxea whereby a stem cell internally cleaves a secondary cell contained within a vacuole. It differs from other species in the phylum in that each secondary cell produces a single spore composed of two concentric cells, one within a vacuole of the other. This type of sporulation represents the simplest of all known Paramyxea. Infection results in focal gill lesions and was observed concurrently with an epizootic of another paramyxean, Marteilia sydneyi.

Insulin action in the vasculature: physiology and pathophysiology.

Studies to date have provided convincing evidence that insulin has an important role in the normal functioning of the vasculature from the perspective of the regulated delivery of nutrients to a tissue bed. This is mediated by an effect on the endothelium analogous to other endothelial responses, and insulin resistance is reflected in, and in part due to, impaired vasodilatory actions of insulin. Because insulin normally stimulates the net production of nitric oxide, which is beneficial in both the short term for vasomotion and antithrombosis, and the long term for inhibition of smooth muscle cell growth and migration, vascular insulin resistance also has important implications for vascular pathophysiology. Further, recent evidence suggests that the hyperinsulinemia accompanying insulin resistance may aggravate this situation by augmenting the endothelial production and release of endothelin-1. The investigation of insulin resistance in the vasculature provides not only a unique and physiologically relevant window onto vascular pathology, but also an opportunity for therapeutic targeting in individuals affected by the clinical states of insulin resistance. The present review highlights the importance of insulin sensitivity in the maintenance of endothelial function and explores the relationships between vascular insulin resistance and whole body glucose disposal. In addition, the recent evidence linking insulin to endothelin-1 production is discussed. Improving insulin sensitivity with insulin sensitizers such as rosiglitazone may represent an important advance in our ability to improve vascular dysfunction in diabetes.

The distribution of intestinal helminth infections in a rural village in Guatemala.

Fecal egg count scores were used to investigate the distribution and abundance of intestinal helminths in the population of a rural village. Prevalences of the major helminths were 41% with Ascaris lumbricoides, 60% with Trichuris trichiura and 50% with Necator americanus. All three parasites showed a highly aggregated distribution among hosts. Age/prevalence and age/intensity profiles were typical for both A. lumbricoides and T. trichiura with the highest worm burdens in the 5-10 year old children. For hookworm both prevalence and intensity curves were convex in shape with maximum infection levels in the 30-40 year old age class. Infected females had higher burdens of T. trichiura than infected males in all age classes of the population; there were no other effects of host gender. Analysis of associations between parasites within hosts revealed strong correlations between A. lumbricoides and T. trichiura. Individuals with heavy infections of A. lumbricoides and T. trichiura showed highly significant aggregation within households. Associations between a variety of household features and heavy infections with A. lumbricoides and T. trichiura are described.
