[A case of renal capillary hemangioma].

This is a case of a 18 year-old female with capillary hemangioma of the left kidney. This tumor forms a well-demarcated solid mass showing a low grade contrast enhancement on CT, an echogenic pattern on sonogram, and hypovascularity on angiography. The radiologic findings on this tumor have wide variations in the previously reported cases.

[A case of sarcoidosis associated with membranous nephropathy].

A 59-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital with a complaint of right visual disturbance. At admission, she had proteinuria and microscopic hematuria. The pulmonary X-ray showed bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy (BHL) but tuberculin test were negative. Also, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and renal biopsy were performed. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) contained a high percentage of OKT 4 positive cells. In renal biopsy, light microscopic study showed thickening glomerular basement membrane (GBM) with tubulo-interstitial legion. Immuno-fluorescent study revealed granular deposits of IgG along glomerular capillary wall. Electron microscopic study showed subepithelial electron dense deposits of GBM, which are characteristic for membranous nephropathy (MN). It is well known that both sarcoidosis and MN are associated with immunological abnormality. This case might be significant for the study of pathogenesis of sarcoidosis.

[Clinico-pathological study and appraisal of treatment for endometrial cancer at the Ehime University Hospital].

Clinical and pathological studies were performed on 51 cases with endometrial cancer. The results are as follows: The average age was 58.9 years and the range 41 to 80 years. Forty-one (80.4%) patients were postmenopausal and the average menopausal age was 49.1 years. All cases were symptomatic and in 35 (76.5%) cases the postmenopausal bleeding was noted as a chief complaint. The chief complications were obesity (37.5%), hypertension (25.0%), infertility (13.7%) and diabetes mellitus (9.4%). Of 51 cases, 36(70.6%) were in Stage I, 7(13.7%) in Stage II, 6(11.8%) in Stage III and 2(3.9%) in Stage IV. When the depth of the invasion was classified into 3 grades, less than 1/3 of the muscular layer, between 1/3 and 2/3, and over 2/3 in 48 cases examined, they were observed in 20(41.7%), 10(20.8%) and 18 cases (37.5%) respectively. There were 6 cases (15%) with lymph node involvement in 40 cases examined. Those in which the depth of invasion was over 2/3, had a significantly higher incidence of lymph node involvement. The five year cumulative survival rate was 66.7%(14/21) for all cases. The clinical stage and age of the patients had a significant correlation with the prognosis of endometrial cancer, but the histological grades, the depth of invasion, and lymph node involvement did not demonstrate the a significant correlation in prognosis in this study. The five year survival rate for the group treated by modified pan-hysterectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy was 92.3% which was significantly higher than the 25% of the group treated by simple hysterectomy or than the 0% of non-surgical group.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[CT findings of ongoing intracerebral hematoma].

Three cases of ongoing intracerebral hematoma are reported. In all cases, a very small hematoma on the initial CT taken within 2 hours after onset increased in size to such an extent that surgical intervention was necessary. A round radiolucent zone in high density clots was seen on the initial CT of all cases. The attenuation values of each pixels in hematoma formed V-figure in profile display, vfrying from minimum density (40-60) in the center of radiolucent zone to the maximum density (80-90) in peripheral clots. Experimental data have established that the density of blood in circulation and, therefore, one immediately after extravasation is directly related to the patient's hemoglobin and hematocrit levels. Hemoconcentration following clot formation and serum absorption in the brain tissue results in further increase of hematoma density. The radiolucent zone in a intracerebral hematoma suggests extravasated fresh blood. Therefore, we conclud that this is an evidence of active bleeding which calls for immediate surgery.

Kinetics of oxygen metabolism during respiratory burst in Japanese eel neutrophils.

Two oxygen radicals, superoxide and hydrogen peroxide, were measured by ferricytochrome C reduction and scopoletin fluorescent assays to investigate oxygen metabolism during the respiratory burst in Japanese eel neutrophils. Maximal superoxide production was obtained using 0.1 microgram/mL of PMA. Oxygen consumption was almost equivalent to superoxide production, indicating that the consumed oxygen was almost fully converted to superoxide in eel neutrophils. Hydrogen peroxide production was approximately half that of oxygen consumption or superoxide production in neutrophils elicited by killed bacteria or casein. The amounts of superoxide and hydrogen peroxide production, by neutrophils elicited by irritants, were about 11.5 and 5.0 nM/10(7) cells/ min, respectively, which were significantly higher than those of unelicited neutrophils (2.4 and 0.3 nM/10(7) cells/min, respectively).

Evidence for the existence of cytochrome b558 in fish neutrophils by polyclonal anti-peptide antibody.

When western blotting analysis of Japanese eel neutrophil lysate was performed using antibody against the synthetic peptide corresponding to the carboxyl terminal region of human cytochrome b558 large subunit, a broad band was specifically detected at approximately 90 kDa. The antibody recognized the epitope present in eel neutrophils only after the cells were permeabilized with detergent. These results indicate that the large subunit of cytochrome b exists in fish neutrophils and the epitope is exposed to the cytoplasmic side of membrane, and suggest that cytochrome b is conserved across species.
