Bioremediation of trichloroethylene and cis-1,2-dichloroethylene-contaminated groundwater by methane-utilizing bacteria.

Experimental studies on the bioremediation of groundwater contaminated with low concentration trichloroethylene (TCE) and cis1,2-dichloroethylene (DCE) were performed with two sets of bioreactors. Reactors No. 1 and No. 2 were operated without and with methane supplement, respectively. No inoculum was used. The concentrations of TCE and DCE in the effluent and the off gas from reactor No. 2 were much lower than those from reactor No. 1. When air and an H2O2 solution were supplied to reactor No. 2, concentrations of TCE and DCE in the effluent and the off gas were lower than the lowest detectable limit. The population of methane-utilizing bacteria in reactor No. 2 was 1,000 times higher than that in groundwater or in the effluent from reactor No. 1. These methane-utilizing bacteria were apparently attributable to the treatment of TCE.

Experimental orthotopic heart and bilateral lung transplantation completed without cardiopulmonary bypass.

INTRODUCTION: Most experimental studies of orthotopic heart and lung graft failure are complicated by an inability to eliminate the rejection-specific inflammatory mediator from the cardiopulmonary bypass. METHODS: The following model was developed in our laboratory to investigate the feasibility of performing an orthotopic heart and bilateral lung transplantation without performing a cardiopulmonary bypass. Nineteen transplants were attempted using 19 pairs of mongrel dogs. The recipient dog (mean weight, 23 kg) was anesthetized, and the ascending aorta, the superior vena cava (SVC), the inferior vena cava (IVC), and the main bronchus were dissected. Then, the donor dog (mean weight, 20 kg) was anesthetized, and the heart and lung block was prepared and explanted from the chest under cardioplegic arrest. A Gore-tex shunt (W. L. Gore; Flagstaff, AZ) was placed side-to-side between the recipient IVC and SVC, and then the donor right atrium was anastomosed to the Gore-tex shunt. The donor ascending aorta was anastomosed to the recipient ascending aorta with a partial clamp. On completion of these anastomoses, the donor heart was reperfused by the recipient heart and allowed to beat. When hemodynamic conditions were stable with double hearts, the recipient SVC and IVC were ligated just proximal to the venous anastomosis and the recipient aorta was ligated proximal to the anastomotic site. The recipient trachea was anastomosed to the donor trachea with an end-to-end anastomosis. Finally, the recipient heart and lungs were removed from the chest and the sternum was closed. RESULTS: Four of the 19 transplants failed. Three died due to left ventricular dysfunction, and one died due to bleeding. Mean (+/- SD) ischemic time was 67 +/- 11 min with a mean (+/- SD) anastomotic time of 54 +/- 12 min. The 15 survivors were hemodynamically stable with or without the minimal use of inotropic support (dopamine, 2 to 3 microg/kg/min) 6 h after grafting, with normal cardiac output, satisfactory oxygenation, and normal wall motion. The sternotomy was repaired without loss of cardiopulmonary function. CONCLUSIONS: On the basis of our experiences, the experimental model of orthotopic heart and bilateral lung transplantation completed "off pump" can be technically feasible without the loss of cardiac and pulmonary functions.

Cohort migration of carcinoma cells: differentiated colorectal carcinoma cells move as coherent cell clusters or sheets.

Active migration of tumor cells is usually assessed as single cell locomotion in vitro using Boyden chamber-type assays. In vivo, however, carcinoma cells, malignant cells of epithelial origin, frequently invade the surrounding tissue as coherent clusters or nests of cells. We have called this type of movement "cohort migration". In our work, the invasion front of colon carcinomas consisted of compact tumor glands, partially resolved glands or markedly resolved glands with scattered tumor cell clusters or single cells lying ahead. In the former two types, which constituted about a half of all cases, cohort migration seems to be the predominant mechanism, whereas both cohort migration and single cell locomotion may be involved in the last one. In this light, it is very advantageous to investigate the mechanisms involved in the cohort migration. In this review, we present a two-dimensional motility assay as a cohort migration model, in which human colorectal carcinoma cells move outwards from the cell islands mainly as localized coherent sheets of cells when stimulated with 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) or hepatocyte growth factor/scatter factor (HGF/SF). Within the migrating cell sheets, wide intercellular gaps occur at the lower portion of the cells to allow the cells to extend leading lamellae forward while close cell-cell contacts remain at the upper portion of the cells. This localized modulation of cell-cell adhesion at the lower portion of the cells is associated with increased tyrosine phosphorylation of the E-cadherin-catenin complex in TPA-induced cohort migration and with reduced alpha-catenin complexed with E-cadherin in HGF/SF-induced cohort migration. Furthermore, fibronectin deposited by migrating cells is essential for their movement, and on the gelatin-coated substrate even degradation and remodeling of the substrate by matrix metalloproteinases are also needed. Thus, in cohort migration it is likely that cells are released from cell-cell adhesion only at the lower portion of the cells via modulation of E-cadherin-catenin-based mechanism, and this change allows the cells to extend leading lamellae onto the extracellular matrix substrate remodeled by deposition of fibronectin and organized digestion.

Membrane-bound cell surface peptidases in reproductive organs.

Membrane-bound cell surface peptidases including aminopeptidase-N (EC 3.4.11.2), dipeptidyl peptidases IV (EC.3.4.14.5), carboxypeptidase-M (EC 3.4.17.12), neutral endopeptidase (EC 3.4.24.11) and endothelin converting enzyme-1 (EC 3.4.23) were shown to be differently expressed on human ovarian granulosa, theca interna and luteal cells and on endometrial epithelial and stromal cells. These peptidases have their catalytic sites extracellularly and can metabolize biologically active peptides at the cell surface, serving as local regulators of peptide concentrations. In the ovary and endometrium, numerous peptides are considered to be locally produced and play an important role in the follicular growth, ovulation, corpus luteum function, endometrial differentiation and embryo implantation in an autocrine and/or paracrine fashion. The inhibition of aminopeptidase activity by bestatin affected murine follicular growth, steroidogenesis by porcine ovarian cells and progesterone-induced decidualization of human endometrial stromal cells in vivo or in vitro. These findings suggest that membrane-bound peptidases are important regulators of the function and differentiation of the ovarian cells and endometrial cells including embryo. In the near future, the physiological roles of these peptidases will be clarified and clinical use of peptidase inhibitors may be applied to the various reproductive disorders.

Cyclic bursts of ventricular premature contractions of more than one minute intervals.

Ventricular premature contractions (VPCs) occasionally appear successively in the form of bigeminy, trigeminy or quadrigeminy associated with quiescent periods. However, details of these rhythmic VPC bursts have not been well documented. We analyzed the incidence, periodicity and interval of VPC bursts exhibiting bigeminy or trigeminy using ambulatory ECG monitoring and computer analysis. We defined VPC bursts as more than 5 successive groups of VPCs each containing more than 20 VPCs in the form of bigeminy or trigeminy that were interrupted by normal sinus rhythm lasting for more than 60 seconds. Bursts thus defined were observed transiently or continuously in 78 out of 500 consecutive patients showing > 3000 VPCs a day. Their age ranged from 14 to 76 years (mean 48). Forty patients were men and 38 were women. We could discriminate between two types of bursts on the instantaneous heart rate tachograms. Dome type bursts (n = 48) showed gradual shortening of the VPC coupling intervals whereas horizontal type bursts (n = 30) demonstrated fixed coupling intervals during the bursts. Cycle length of the dome type burst was 185 +/- 40 seconds and regular, whereas it was 210 +/- 63 seconds and irregular in the horizontal type (NS). Duration of the VPC bursts was 101 +/- 31 seconds in the dome type and 98 +/- 41 seconds in the horizontal type. Both burst types were associated with transient increases in sinus rate and abbreviated VPC-VPC intervals. We suspect ventricular parasystole to be the mechanism of these bursts especially in the dome type. Recognition of these two burst types from heart rate tachograms may be of value in the suppression of VPCs.

Intracellular calcium concentration in the inositol trisphosphate receptor type 1 knockout mouse.

Recently, mice with a disrupted inositol trisphosphate (IP3) receptor type 1 allele were produced by gene targeting. To examine the role of IP3 receptor type I in the regulation of intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) of glomerular cells, [Ca2+]i was measured with fura 2-acetoxymethyl-ester in the superfused glomeruli from homozygous and wild-type mice. [Ca2+]i was determined in calcium-free medium before and after the addition of 10(-7) M endothelin-1 (ET-1) and 10(-6) M angiotensin II (AngII). The expression of mRNA of IP3 receptor isoforms and hormone receptors in the glomeruli from these animals also was measured by quantitative reverse transcription-PCR with specific primers for IP3 receptor isoforms (types 1, 2, and 3), AngII receptor type 1, and ET receptors (types A and B). In homozygous mutants, the shorter mRNA of IP3 receptor type 1, which lacks the first exon, is transcribed. Basal [Ca2+]i and the responses to ET-1 and AngII in homozygous mutants (ET-1, 55 +/- 7 nM to 73 +/- 7 nM; AngII, 66 +/- 6 to 91 +/- 8 nM) were significantly lower than those in the wild-type mice (ET-1, 93 +/- 13 nM to 162 +/- 13 nM; AngII, 87 +/- 7 to 147 +/- 9 nM; P < 0.05 for both hormones) without significant changes in mRNA expression of hormone receptors. The results with quantitative reverse transcription-PCR also revealed that mRNA expression of the IP3 receptor gene family was not significantly different between the two groups. The present study clearly shows that IP3 receptor type 1 plays a major role in the regulation of [Ca2+]i in the glomeruli and that lack of an isoform of IP3 receptor in the glomeruli does not induce expression of the other isoforms of the IP3 receptor.

Secondary prevention with lipid lowering therapy in familial hypercholesterolemia: a correlation between new evolution of stenotic lesion and achieved cholesterol levels after revascularization procedures.

OBJECT: To assess the value of secondary prevention with lipid lowering therapy following either balloon angioplasty (PTCA) or bypass surgery (CABG) in familial hypercholesterolemia patients, the correlation of the new evolution of stenotic lesions and therapeutically achieved cholesterol levels was studied in 50 patients. METHODS: All surviving patients were followed angiographically after 5 years, and findings were correlated with the annually determined total serum cholesterol (TC) levels. RESULTS: New coronary atherosclerotic plaques were not observed in 18 patients in whom the TC was controlled to <220 mg/dl but in 19 of 32 patients in whom the TC was >220 mg/dl, a new evolution of stenotic lesions was observed angiographically. CONCLUSION: The new evolution of stenotic lesions following revascularization in patients with FH can be controlled significantly by lipid lowering therapy to maintain a TC level of <220 mg/dl, and if diet alone can not achieve it, aggressive medication and even LDL apheresis might be justified.

Health consciousness of young people in relation to their personality.

Personality of targeted individuals can be assumed to influence behavior modification by health education. In this study the influence of personality on health consciousness was analyzed by a questionnaire for lifestyle, health consciousness, and the NEO-FFI personality test. Subjects were 942 new students in the Tokyo University of Agriculture who were surveyed in April, 1998. Separately performed health examination data were used to verify reliability of answers to the questionnaire. Among students, 83.2% of males and 90.4% of females felt themselves to be healthy, and more than 80% students desired to improve their health more. The rate of having no physical complaints, however, was only 31.7% in males and 20.4% in females. Distribution of NEO-FFI scores of neuroticism (N), extraversion (E), openness (O), agreeableness (A), and conscientiousness (C) corresponded well between males and females, except for significantly higher scores of O and A in females. Odds ratios (ORs) between high and low tertial points of NEO-FFI score for health consciousness were significantly elevated in the high scoring groups of E and C (OR = 6.26, 95% CI = 1.46-26.82, and OR = 6.04, 95% CI = 1.42-25.71, respectively) in males. On the contrary, high N and O groups had low health consciousness. Smoking habit was associated with high E scores (OR = 2.24, 95% CI = 1.13-4.43). Dietary habits, regular eating time, and avoidance of salty foods were associated with high C scores in both males and females. The OR of regular eating time was 2.66 (95% CI = 1.42-1.98), and 2.20 (95% CI = 1.31-3.71) for males and females, respectively. The OR of avoidance of salty foods were 2.09 (95% CI = 1.11-3.91), 1.87 (95% CI = 1.11-3.16) for males and females, respectively. Significant associations between lifestyle and personality require further study for risk association analysis and for relationship to interventive practices for prevention of lifestyle associated diseases.

Influences of 4-meta/MMA-TBB adhesive resin on osteodentinogenesis of transplanted rabbit dental pulp in vivo: immunohistochemical and electronmicroscopic studies.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of 4-META/MMA-TBB adhesive resin (4-META resin) on osteodentinogenesis of transplanted pulp in vivo. Dental pulp was obtained from the incisors of adult rabbits. 4-META resin was applied to the pulp tissue, and the pulp tissue with 4-META resin was autotransplanted beneath the renal capsule with the pulp side touching the kidney. Pulp tissue alone was also transplanted as a control. The animals were sacrificed at 3, 7, and 14 days after the experiment, and the specimens were examined morphologically. At 3 days, proliferation of mesenchymal cells was observed, and alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP) and osteocalcin were detected throughout the entire transplanted pulp area. In the experimental case, a thin, highly electron dense zone and a granular layer were observed. Under this layer, only a cell-membrane-like structure, a cell with an unclear nucleus, a nucleus alone, and an organelle-like structure could be seen. Furthermore, an exudative layer with many neutrophils was observed, and apoptotic-body-like structures were also found in some areas. On days 7 and 14 in the control group, osteoblast-like cells had proliferated, and osteodentin formation was initiated throughout the entire transplanted pulp area. In the experimental cases at 7 and 14 days, the entire transplanted area had become osteodentin except for a thin fibrous layer under the 4-META resin. These results suggested that the components of 4-META resin such as MMA and 4-MET (A), which guide the polymerization, might cause degeneration of, but not disturb, the wound healing of the pulp tissue.

Effect of long-term treatment with inhaled beclomethasone dipropionate on growth of asthmatic children.

The effect of long-term inhaled steroid therapy on linear growth in asthmatic children is still a point of controversy. We tried to clarify the effect of long-term treatment with inhaled beclomethasone dipropionate (BDP) on linear growth and final height of asthmatic children. Height data measured annually from 12 years (beginning at age 10 years in most patients) to 20 years of age were retrospectively collected from clinical records in 97 moderate to severe asthmatics (49 boys, 48 girls) born in 1971-1975 who were observed regularly for more than 8 years at our outpatient clinic. Data were expressed as standard deviation scores and were compared between patients treated with BDP (30 boys and 31 girls, mean daily dosages were 300-800 microg) and without BDP. Growth delay in the early period of puberty and catch-up growth in the late period of puberty was found in both patients treated with and without BDP. The age of onset of treatment with BDP inhalation had no influence on linear growth, and asthmatic children receiving optimum treatment eventually attained standard final height for their age group. Long-term treatment with inhaled BDP in conventional doses does not significantly impair linear growth in asthmatic children.

Combining endovascular and neurosurgical treatments of high-risk dural arteriovenous fistulas in the lateral sinus and the confluence of the sinuses.

OBJECT: The authors describe the use of a systemic approach to treat dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) in the lateral sinus and the confluence of sinuses in 17 patients who presented with signs and symptoms related to intracranial hemorrhage, infarction, and diffuse brain swelling. METHODS: Angiographic examination revealed three different types of DAVFs in these high-risk patients: 1) extremely high flow DAVF not associated with sinus occlusion or leptomeningeal retrograde venous drainage (LRVD); 2) localized DAVF with exclusive LRVD and without sinus occlusion; and 3) diffuse DAVF with sinus occlusion and LRVD. Because of the complex nature of these lesions, the authors adopted a staged protocol in which they combined endovascular and surgical treatments. CONCLUSIONS: The authors believe that by close collaboration between endovascular therapists and vascular neurosurgeons, high-risk DAVFs in the lateral sinus and the confluence of sinuses can be successfully managed without treatment-related morbidity and mortality.

Fusiform vertebral artery aneurysms as a cause of dissecting aneurysms. Report of two autopsy cases and a review of the literature.

Two autopsy cases of angiographically determined fusiform aneurysms of the vertebral arteries (VAs) are reported and the appropriate literature is reviewed to investigate the pathological characteristics of both fusiform and dissecting VA aneurysms and the pathogenesis of dissecting aneurysms. One patient had suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) due to dissection of a previously documented incidental fusiform aneurysm. The other patient had harbored incidental fusiform aneurysms coexistent with a ruptured aneurysm of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery. The location and pathological features of the aneurysms were similar in the two cases. The aneurysms in both cases displayed intimal thickening, disruption of the internal elastic lamina, and degeneration of the media. A mural hemorrhage and patchy calcification were also found in the case that included SAH. Based on their pathological investigation of these two cases and a review of reported cases, the authors propose that incidental fusiform aneurysms in the VAs are characterized by weakness in the internal elastic lamina and, therefore, have the potential to become dissecting aneurysms, resulting in a fatal prognosis. This suggests that long-term control of blood pressure is mandatory in patients with incidental fusiform aneurysms in the VAs.

Neuroendoscopic approach to tectal tumors: a consecutive series.

OBJECT: The authors report a consecutive series of 10 patients who presented with signs and symptoms caused by tectal tumors. Clinical findings, radiographic features, neuroendoscopic management strategies, and histological findings are reported and discussed. METHODS: Since January 1990, 11 neuroendoscopic procedures were performed in 10 patients who harbored tectal tumors. The patients were followed for an average of 5 years (range 2 months-11 years), and a retrospective study was conducted in which case notes, radiological findings, operative notes, and histopathological findings were assessed. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging was performed, and the images were used to classify patients into three groups: those with hypertrophy of the tectum in whom isointensity appeared on T1-weighted images (Group 1); those with a tectal tumor occupying the cerebral aqueduct in whom decreased signal intensity appeared on T1-weighted images, as well as no enhancement after gadolinium administration (Group 2); and those with a tectal tumor in whom mixed signal intensity and conspicuous evidence of contrast enhancement appeared on T1-weighted images (Group 3). The results of histological examination were consistent with MR imaging features: in Group 1, glial tissue or gliosis; in Group 2, benign astrocytoma; and in Group 3, malignant astrocytoma. Cerebrospinal fluid diversion was the only surgical treatment that provided relief from obstructive hydrocephalus. One patient in Group 3 underwent radiotherapy and subsequent partial tumor removal under neuroendoscopic guidance. Thereafter, the tumor remained in decline. All patients had normal intellectual status after undergoing surgery in which a neuroendoscope was used. CONCLUSIONS: Neuroendoscopic procedures can provide histological diagnosis, define the tumor-midbrain interrelationship, and be highly effective in treating obstructive hydrocephalus and in removing tectal tumors. This procedure may receive clinical application as a new management strategy for tectal glioma.

Matrix metalloproteinase-1 expression is a prognostic factor for patients with advanced gastric cancer.

Proteolytic activity of cancer cells is an important factor in metastasis. This study examined the relationship between MMP-1 expression of gastric cancer cells and peritoneal metastasis. MMP-1 expression was found in 76/103 (75.2%) cases examined and was significantly associated with both peritoneal metastasis and lymph node metastasis (p<0.05, respectively). The prognosis of patients with MMP-1 positive tumor was significantly worse than that of patients with MMP-1 negative tumor (p<0.05). These findings suggested that MMP-1 might be a prognostic factor in case of advanced gastric cancer and might be useful in determining whether or not adjuvant therapy was indicated for patients at high risk of peritoneal recurrence.

Angiotensin receptor subtype 1 mediates angiotensin II enhancement of isoproterenol-induced cyclic AMP production in preglomerular microvascular smooth muscle cells.

In a previous study, we found that angiotensin (Ang) II enhances beta-adrenoceptor-induced cAMP production in cultured preglomerular microvascular smooth muscle cells (PMVSMCs) obtained from spontaneously hypertensive rats. The purpose of the present investigation was to identify the Ang receptor subtypes that mediate this effect. In our first study, we compared the ability of Ang II, Ang III, Ang (3-8), and Ang (1-7) to increase cAMP production in isoproterenol (1 microM)-treated PMVSMCs. Each peptide was tested at 0.1, 1, 10, 100, and 1000 nM. Both Ang II and Ang III increased intracellular (EC50s, 1 and 11 nM, respectively) and extracellular (EC50s, 2 and 14 nM, respectively) cAMP levels in a concentration-dependent fashion. In contrast, Ang (3-8) and Ang (1-7) did not enhance either intracellular or extracellular cAMP levels at any concentration tested. In our second study, we examined the ability of L 158809 [a selective Ang receptor subtype 1 (AT1) receptor antagonist] to inhibit Ang II (100 nM) and Ang III (100 nM) enhancement of isoproterenol (1 microM)-induced cAMP production in PMVSMCs. L 158809 (10 nM) abolished or nearly abolished (p <.001) Ang II and Ang III enhancement of isoproterenol-induced intracellular and extracellular cAMP levels. In contrast, PD 123319 (300 nM; a selective AT2 receptor antagonist) did not significantly alter Ang II enhancement of isoproterenol-induced intracellular or extracellular cAMP levels. We conclude that AT1 receptors, but not AT2, Ang (3-8), nor Ang (1-7) receptors mediate Ang II and Ang III enhancement of beta-adrenoceptor-induced cAMP production in cultured PMVSMCs.

[A trial case of coronary bypass surgery under heart beat in a patient with severe functional disorders of kidney].

Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) was performed under heart beat without conducting extracorporeal circulation in a patient with severe functional disorders of kidney, and satisfactory results were attained. The patient was a 71-year-old male with past history of severe functional disorders of kidney and cerebral infarction. He had triple-vessel disease. First, CABG was performed for the primary branches under heart beat without adopting extra-corporeal circulation, then later, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) was performed for the residual lesions, which lead to complete revascularization without causing aggravation of cerebral infarction or functional disorders of kidney or subjective symptoms such as chest pain. CABG conducted under heart beat is less aggressive not only to myocardium but to other important organs, and is thought to be effective for patients who have severe concurrent diseases to which extracorporeal circulation is likely to entail risks. Furthermore, concurrent therapy with PTCA is thought to expand the scope of application of CABG under heart beat including the cases of multiple-vessel diseases.

Myocardial revascularization without cardiopulmonary bypass in patients with operative risk factors.

We have treated 7 myocardial revascularization cases with operative risk factors, using the beating heart technique without cardiopulmonary bypass. Operative risk factors included left ventricular dysfunction, calcified aorta, chronic renal failure, cerebrovascular accident, immunosupressive state and old age. The 6 males and 1 female ranged in age from 54 to 84 years (mean age 70 years). The mean number of grafts was 1.3 per patient. All were extubated within 3 hours of arrival at the intensive care unit. Inotropic catecholamin support was not necessary on postoperative days. None of our patients had perioperative myocardial infarction. Postoperative angiography showed that all grafts were patent. We have found, based on our experiences, that selected patients can safely undergo CABG without cardiopulmonary support.

18F alpha-methyl tyrosine PET studies in patients with brain tumors.

UNLABELLED: We have developed 18F-labeled alpha-methyl tyrosine (FMT) for PET imaging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical application potential of FMT for patients with brain tumors. METHODS: Eleven healthy volunteers and 20 patients with brain tumors were injected with 185 MBq (5 mCi) FMT. In 3 healthy volunteers, whole-body imaging and urinary and plasma analysis were conducted for the assessment of the biodistribution of FMT. The normal range of cortical standardized uptake value (SUV) as a reference for comparing tumor SUV of FMT was estimated by using PET data obtained at 30 min postinjection in 8 healthy volunteers. Dynamic PET scans were conducted for 100 min in 4 healthy volunteers and for 30 min in 15 patients with brain tumors. The 10-min static images in another 4 volunteers and all patients were obtained at 30 min postinjection. In 13 patients, FMT uptake in the brain tumor was compared with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG). Tumor-to-normal cortex count (T/N) ratio and tumor-to-white matter count (T/W) ratio and SUVs of brain tumors were determined on FMT and FDG PET images. RESULTS: Approximately 1480 MBq (40 mCi) FMT were produced in one radiosynthesis. Percentage injected dose (%ID) of FMT in the brain ranged from 2.8% to 4.9%, and approximately 50%ID of FMT was excreted in urine during 60 min postinjection, of which 86.6% was unmetabolized FMT. A faint physiological brain uptake with SUV of 1.61 +/- 0.32 (mean +/- SD, n = 8) was observed in healthy volunteers. Tumor SUV of FMT ranged from 1.2 to 8.2, with mean value of 2.83 +/- 1.57 (n = 23), which was significantly higher than that of the cortical area in healthy volunteers (P < 0.01). T/N and T/W ratios of FMT were significantly higher than those of FDG (2.53 +/- 1.31 versus 1.32 +/- 1.46, P < 0.001; 3.99 +/- 2.10 versus 1.39 +/- 0.65, P < 0.0001, respectively). CONCLUSION: FMT, like other radiolabeled amino acids, can provide high-contrast PET images of brain tumors.
