Of 480 myna birds imported from Thailand in 1976, 54 birds died shortly after arrival in Japan. Bacteriological and pathological examination were carried out on seven of them. Pasteurella multocida was almost purely isolated from all the liver, heart, spleen and trachea examined. Somatic antigen of the isolants was O-5 of Namioka and Murata. Dissection revealed hyperemia of the trachea, edema of the lungs, increase of pleural fluid, and petechial or ecchymotic hemorrhages in the liver, heart and duodenum. Minute necrotic foci in the liver and bacterial clumps in the foci, pulmonary exudate and septa were found under the microscope. Severe pathogenicity of one of the isolated strains was proved by inoculation of 50-day-old broiler chickens with 10(3)-10(5) viable cells and by death within 18 hours, following the inoculation.

Alkyl N-hydroxycarbamates exhibited weak but significant mutagenic activity for Salmonella typhimurium TA100. The mutagenic potencies of these N-hydroxycarbamates were ranked thus: ethyl N-hydroxycarbamate greater than propyl N-hydroxycarbamate greater than methyl N-hydroxycarbamate. Acylation of ethyl N-hydroxycarbamate markedly enhanced its mutagenic activity for TA100. The highest mutagenic activity was observed with ethyl N-benzoyloxycarbamate among these acyl derivatives. Almost all the compounds were mutagenic to all the strains TA1535, TA100, TA98, especially to TA100.
In a renal failure patient, asthma developed after 1 year hemodialytic treatment. The attack was exclusively associated with each hemodialysis. Skin test to the usual allergen such as house dusts or pollens was negative. The provocation test by inhaling acetate solution or oral intake of acetic acid was positive resulting in an increase in the pulmonary resistance, or asthmatic attack. This asthma disappeared completely after substitution of acetate in the hemodialysis by the use of a bicarbonate dialysate. Acetate might therefore precipitate the attack of asthma.

A simple, compact and light weight design for a machine to perform plasma exchange or haemofiltration at a desired place is required. Based on these considerations, we have designed and fabricated a portable machine having a unique volume balancing mechanism and evaluated the in vitro and in vivo fluid balancing performances. We have obtained fully acceptable results during the evaluations and have performed clinical tests with favourable results.

One hundred two children with ECHO 11 virus infection were analyzed as to symptomatology, which was related to the age of the patients. Neonates manifested an undifferentiated febrile illness in most cases. The symptomatology of older infants and toddlers was different from that of newborns with respect to the presence of discernible pharyngitis in two thirds of the cases. An exaggerated febrile response complicated by convulsions or gastrointestinal symptoms was another characteristic feature of this age group. A characteristic manifestation of children more than 3 years old was pharyngitis which included minute vesicular lesions or exudative ulcers around the fauces.
