Twenty-four spontaneously occurring convulsive seizures were documented by closed-circuit TV (CCTV)-EEG monitoring in 3 cats subjected to unilateral amygdaloid overkindling for < or = 2 years. Electroclinical manifestations suggested that the seizures originated in the kindled amygdala (AM) (10 seizures in 3 cats), contralateral AM (7 seizures in 3 cats), or ipsilateral frontal cortex (7 seizures in 1 cat). All seizures of AM origin except one occurred during sleep 23 h to 20 days after the last stimulation-induced kindled seizure and culminated in secondarily generalized seizures. The seizures of frontal cortical origin occurred during waking within 1 h of a kindled seizure and remained partial in nature. In seizures of AM origin, ictal patterns at the primary and secondary sites were mirror images of each other, but latency of onset of each seizure stage in seizures of secondary site AM origin was longer than that in seizures of primary site AM origin in 2 of the 3 animals. We conclude that the secondary epileptogenic functional alterations capable of producing clinical seizures do occur in AM-overkindled cats, but the seizures are not entirely independent of the primary kindled site.
This study evaluated a novel non-verbal communication method for people with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID) based on a biochemical marker, salivary amylase. The physical and psychological status of 10 people with SMID was quantitatively evaluated using a hand-held salivary amylase activity monitor. Each patient needed daily gastric and/or bronchial tube exchanges and these medical procedures were thought to cause severe distress and pain. Salivary amylase activity and heart rate were simultaneously measured during 32 medical procedures. The medical procedures resulted in a significant mean increase for individuals of 70% in salivary amylase activity. The increase in salivary amylase activity was more than four-fold that observed for heart rate. The structural equation modelling analysis also demonstrated a significant correlation between pain and salivary amylase activity. Our data indicate that salivary amylase activity might be used as a non-verbal method of assessing pain in people with SMID.

The authors have studied the frequency of an abnormal lipoprotein (LP-X), by the method presented by YAE e col. (21). The LP-X test is useful in differentiating of a cholestatic process from a non-cholestatic one, but it is not adequate to distinguish an intrahepatic cholestasis from an extrahepatic biliary obstruction. Out of the 41 icteric patients who were studied, a frequency of the presence of the LP-X was observed in 68.3% thus distributed: viral hepatitis 90,5% obstructive jaundice 85,7%, jaundice of uncertain etiology 37.6%; it was not present in 5 patients with hepatic cirrhosis and in the serum of 21 healthy volunteers. A significant association was found between the presence of LP-X and an abnormal curve of lipoproteins.
Caries risk factors in rural Japan were identified for 637 children age eighteen months. Oral examinations, behavioral risk questionnaires and caries activity tests (Cariostat) were utilized. Results indicated an overall 13.7 percent prevalence of decay and strong correlations between Cariostat and caries status. Of the behavioral risk factors, weaning from breast feeding was most closely related with caries status. All factors resulted in correct classifications of Cariostat score and caries status. These results suggest that a screening of high risk infants can be accomplished by using the questionnaire and Cariostat test.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We investigated the value of the proliferating cell nuclear antigen labeling index ratio (PCNA-LI ratio: PCNA-LI of cancer/PCNA-LI of surrounding non-cancerous liver tissue) to clarify the prognosis of the patients bearing small hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) less than 20 mm in diameter and treated by percutaneous ethanol injection therapy (PEIT). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty eight HCC patients who had received PEIT were divided into 3 groups. The non-recurrence (NR) group in which no new lesions were observed for at least 18 months after PEIT (13 patients), the early recurrence group (ER) in which lesions recurred within one year (6 patients), and the late recurrence group (LR) in which lesions recurred more than one year after PEIT (9 patients). Immunohistochemical staining of PCNA was done using biopsied specimens. RESULTS: The PCNA-LI ratio in 37 well differentiated, 13 moderately differentiated, 11 poorly differentiated HCC were 1.86 +/- 0.55, 3.33 +/- 0.51, and 4.75 +/- 0.81 (mean +/- SD), respectively. The ratio in ER group (4.57 +/- 0.57) was significantly higher than that in LR (2.04 +/- 0.61) and NR group (1.87 +/- 0.62) and the PCNA-LI ratio tended to correlate with the periods until the development of recurrent lesions in cases of ER group. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate the PCNA-LI ratio, in conjunction with the histological grade, is a useful marker for evaluating the grade of malignancy, and for predicting the period until recurrence after treatment of small HCC.
