[Occurrence of housedust mites (Astigmata; Pyroglyphidae) in stables].

Occurrence of house-dust mites (Astigmata; Pyroglyphidae) in stables. The house-dust mite Dermatophagoides farinae was found in 5 samples derived from a conventional henhouse with fowls and pigeons and from a test animal hutch with rats, mice and rabbits. 63 samples derived from conventional sheds, pigsties and hutches as well as from conventional henhouses and large-scale poultry farms showed negative results. Besides mites of the family Pyroglyphidae mites of the Tyroglyphidae family and/or mucedine were found, which affect the development of mite populations. House-dust mites should be considered in the etiology of allergic diseases of dog, cat and livestock.

[Contribution to the parasitic fauna of the GDR (German Democratic Republic). 7. Occurrence of Gasterophilus larvae (Diptera: Gasterophilidae) in horses].

Observations were carried out from May 1977 to May 1980 on occurrence, fauna, and seasonal dynamics of Gasterophilus spp. in 2,539 horses for butchering from all districts of the German Democratic Republic and also in 79 horses after control against gasterophilosis. 99.98% of the 13,742 second and third instar larvae of horses for butchering were Gasterophilus intestinalis, only 0.02% Gasterophilus nasalis. Out of 7,765 larvae passed after control measures Gasterophilus intestinalis dominated with more than 96%. Only in four districts of the German Democratic Republic Gasterophilus nasalis was found. The mean extensive invasion from 1977 to 1980 was 8.7%, the mean intensive invasion 33.4 +/- 3.16 larvae/infected horse, the number of larvae ranging between 2 and 576 per horse. From 1977/78 to 1979/80 the intensive invasion increased from 25.8 +/- 2.74 to 58.6 +/- 3.49 larvae/infected horse. Peaks of extensive invasion appeared in April, May and October. From October to February the horses harboured both second and third instar larvae of Gasterophilus spp. The occurrence of gasterophilosis is concentrated in the northern parts of the German Democratic Republic.

Contribution to the knowledge of the reliability of some serological tests in detecting spontaneous bovine cysticercosis.

A total of 110 bulls coming from a farm where cysticercosis repeatedly occurred were examined by means of indirect haemagglutination (IHA), microprecipitation in agar (MPA), and indirect immunofluorescence reaction (IFR). Cysticercosis (isolated cysts with live or dead cysticerci) was detected in 29 of them at post-mortem examination. Among the 29 infected animals, positive reactions were obtained in 37.9% with IHA, 51.7% with MPA and 10.3% with IFR. The remaining animals were negative. Of 82 animals giving negative reactions with IHA, 22% harboured cysticerci at post-mortem examination. Of 70 animals negative with MPA, 20% were infected with cysticerci and of 71 animals negative with IFR, 29.5% were positive at the slaughter. Consequently, none of the used serological methods is reliable for the detection of a very light spontaneous infection.

[Serological demonstration of experimental round worm infections-Ascaris suum, Toxocara canis--in swine by means of the indirect immunofluorescence antibody test].

By means of indirect immunofluorescent antibody reaction (IFAR), using serum of experimentally infected pigs, various antigens were studied with regard to their usefulness for serological verification of prepatent Ascaris suum and Toxocara canis infections. Eggs, egg larvae, larvae received from livers, lungs and brains of experimentally infected white mice and sections of adult T. canis as well as eggs, egg larvae, liver larvae and sections of frozen adult A. suum proved to be not suitable for the reliable serum diagnosis of the infections. On the other hand, A. suum larvae, isolated from lungs of white mice or guinea pigs days after experimental infection, represent an antigen applicable to IFAR for the evidence of prepatent A. suum infections in pigs. The antigen, stored at -20 degree C, is durable without substantial impairment of its reactivity at least 7 months.

[Parasites in the DDR. 5. The occurrence of helminths in the red fox (Vulpes vulpes L.)].

The authors describe the results of researches on the helminthofauna of red fox (Vulpes vulpes L.) from different hunting-areals in the GDR. The results are compared with those of other authors from European region. From the 55 helminths known in the red fox, 2 species of Trematoda, 4 species of Cestoda and 8 species of Nematoda are found in the GDR. Some information are given about the geographical distribution of the helminths found, the extense- and intense-infection of hosts, and the importance of the red fox as vector of helminthes in health for man and animals.

[Experimental infection in man and monkey (Cercopithecus callitrichus) by sarcosporidian cysts of cattle and swine].

Reported in this paper is experimental sarcosporidial infection of man and lower primates (grass monkey). The courses of infection were followed up by coprological and serological tests. Oral-alimentary administration of 100 Sarcocystis (S.)-fusiformis cysts obtained from cattle muscle caused patent infection in man. Gastro-intestinal symptoms developed in one of the probands, between five and seven days after infection. No sporocysts were detectable from the stools of seven probands who had consumed 200 g each of commercially available minced pork which contained small amounts of Sarcocystis miescherania villi. Rise in antibody to Sarcocystes following infection was detected however, by means of indirect fluorescence antibody reaction (IFAR). Gastrointestinal complaints were reported by one of the probands, one day after infection. No sporocysts were detectable from the stools of four grass monkeys, following oral-alimentary administration of 50 or 25 S. miescherania cysts, but rise in antibody to S. miescherania was recorded in these cases. Those grass monkeys which had received 50 cysts responded by exhibiting, after infection, severe clinical phenomena with intestinal signs and symptoms of the central nervous sytem.

[Development of parasitology in the GDR].

The development of parasitology in the GDR is described. In the GDR there are only 2 chairs of Parasitology in the Faculties of Animal Production and Veterinary Medicine at Humboldt University Berlin and Karl Marx University Leipzig. Parasitology as a teaching field in its own was not become realized in medicine. In the training of zoology parasitology had been recognized only temporarily. For the parasitological practice particular parasitological departments or laboratories developed in each district institute, which are leaded and coordinated by reference laboratories--a state that is an important improvement compared with the situation before the war. The publishing efforts of GDR's authors and publishing houses as well as the mobilizing role of the Parasitological Society of the GDR are especially stressed.

[Problems of the ectoparasite control in the Mongolian People's Republic].

The co-operation between G.D.R. and M.P.R. in the field of control of ectoparasites in farm animals is described. The problems under the specific conditions of the M.P.R. in the control of the principal parasitoses of economic importance such as hypodermosis, mange, tick infestations, oestrosis, vermipsyllosis, gasterophilosis and wohlfahrtiosis are analysed. The successfully applied hypodermosis control program represents the base for further systematic, state-directed strategic measures in controlling of ectoparasitoses.

[Intravital diagnosis of saginata cysticercosis of cattle by means of the immunofluorescent antibody reaction].

Investigations in intravital diagnostics of fin infestation in cattle were performed in 3 month aged cattle experimentally infected by different doses of Taeniarhynchus-saginatus-eggs by means of immunofluorescent antibody technique using a standardized antigen. Regardless of the amount of the infection dose these occured already 2 weeks after infection positive antibody values of at least 1:40 reaching the maximum value of 1:640 4-6 weeks after infection (in cases of strong fin infestation) and 1:160, respectively (in cases of low fin infestation) and remaining positively up to the termination of experiments (23 and 18 weeks, respectively post infectionem). Negative reactions were not observed. With regard to the economy this method is superior to other immundiagnostical procedures hitherto used with success in detection of Cysticercus bovis.

[Parasites in the GDR - introduction].

The registration of the parasitic fauna all over the world is a fundamental supposition for the strategy of antiparasitic measures. The authors make some statements about the documentation of parasite-fauna realized in some European countries and base the necessity of examinations.

[Parasites in the GDR.1. Studies on helminths occurrence in European wild pigs (Sus scrofa)].

In two different hunting-grounds in the north-eastern part of the GDR from November 1972 to March 1974 the authors tested a series of 102 killed wild boars, aged mostly from 7 month to 3 years by means of helminthological dissection and by coprological methods for helminthic stages. From more than 30 well known species of helminths the following 10 species were found: Cysticercus tenuicollis, Echinococcus hydatidosus, Ascaris suum, Ascarops strongylina, Physocephalus sexalatus, Globocephalus urosubulatus, Metastrongylus elongatus, M.pudentodectus, M.salmi and Trichuris suis. Trichinella spiralis could not be found in any case. Finally some information given of extensity and intensity of helminth-infection, parasite-host-relation with regard to the age of host and the occurrence of helminths of wild-boars in the middle-european region.

[Contribution on the parasite fauna of the GDR. 2. Studies of the incidence of helminths in roe-deer (Capreolus capreolus)].

The authors show the results of researches on the helminthofauna in roe deers from two different hunting-grounds. The results are compared with those of other authors in GDR and the Central European region. In roe deers 37 different helminths--1 species of Trematoda, 3 species of Cestoda and 33 species of Nematoda--are found up to till now in GDR. Finally some informations are given about the extense- and the intense-infection of the hosts.

[Studies on the modification of performance and metabolic processes in sheep through experimental Fasciola hepatica infections considering low infestation intensity].

Low experimental infections with Fasciola hepatica (8...17 flukes per animal) in sheep, 6...12 months old, caused less gain weight over a period of 22 weeks. Changes in the number of erythrocytes and in the Hb-concentration were not found. In contrast to the controls the infected sheep showed strong fluctuations in the number of lymphocytes. 3 weeks post infect. a significant eosinophilia was observed, which continued until the end of the investigation. With the beginning of the fourth week post infect. the values of serum albumin were lower, the values of gamma-globulin higher than those of the controls, but there was no statistical significance. The bromosulphalein-test for liver function was negative.
