[Effectiveness of acupuncture and attitude-relaxation training in the treatment of primary sleep disorders].

UNLABELLED: The present study focuses on the differential efficiency of specific psychological and medical procedures for the treatment of chronic sleep disorders (primary symptoms). 32 selected subjects with chronic sleep disorders were assigned to one of the following groups according to their own choice: cognitive change and relaxation training (n = 12), needle acupuncture (n = 8), laser acupuncture (n = 12), and a waiting control group (n = 12). Before, during, and after the respective therapy each subject kept a record with 13 items about his/her sleeping behaviour which had to be filled out every morning. RESULTS: All treatment groups showed an increase in the subjective recovery by sleep as well as a decrease in the use of drugs. On a follow up after two weeks the cognitive change/relaxation group showed a significant decrease in the time required to fall asleep and in the frequency of waking up.

Platelet monoamine oxidase in a pedigree with schizophrenia: an interlaboratory project.

Conflicting reports on the association between platelet MAO activity and schizophrenia prompted a critical review and determinations on identical samples at one laboratory in Sweden and one in the U.S.A. Samples originated from eight schizophrenics and 27 relatives belonging to a large pedigree, thus ensuring biological homogeneity. In the USA laboratory, a significantly lower MAO activity was found in the schizophrenics when benzylamine or beta-phenylethylamine was used as substrate (but not with tryptamine), while a similar result was obtained in the Swedish laboratory when tryptamine was used (but not with benzylamine or beta-phenylethylamine). Comparisons between materials examined in different laboratories do not seem meaningful until differences in methodologies have been clarified. At present there is neither proof nor disproof of MAO being a "genetic marker" for vulnerability to the schizophrenic disorder.

Radioimmunoassay of melatonin: human serum and cerebrospinal fluid.

Using a newly characterized anti-melatonin serum it has been possible to establish human serum melatonin concentrations at short time intervals during 24h. A clear circadian rhythm with peak values during the dark phase was demonstrated in both men and women. Values (pg/ml;mean +/- SE) were as follows: females 02.00h: 130 +/- 7, 18.00h: 45 +/- 5 males 02.00h: 140 +/- 11, 18,00H: 70 +/- 5. The estimation (pg/ml; mean +/- SE) of melatonin in human serum (males: 63 +/- 22 and females: 100 +/- 45) and cerebrospinal fluid simultaneously taken has shown that melatonin is lower in cerebrospinal fluid (males: 59 +/- 33 and females: 57 +/- 28). Blanks are not subtracted.

Human serum melatonin changes during the menstrual cycle.

Serum melatonin concentration in early morning during the menstrual cycle, studied in five healthy women, showed that melatonin was elevated at the time of menstrual bleeding and had its nadir at the time of the menstrual cycling in humans.
