The effects of Kanji attributes on visual field differences: examination with lexical decision, naming and semantic classification tasks.

Using three experimental tasks (lexical decision, naming and semantic classification), the relative contribution of various Kanji attributes in left and right visual field recognition was examined. The results showed that first, factors contributing to the left visual field processing of Kanji differed depending on the level of processing; second, in an early stage of processing, perceptual attributes such as the number of strokes was a strong contributing factor; and third, in a later stage both perceptual- and imagery-related attributes contributed strongly to left visual field or right hemisphere processing.

Isolation of Pseudomonas pickettii strains that degrade 2,4,6-trichlorophenol and their dechlorination of chlorophenols.

Three strains of Pseudomonas pickettii that can grow with 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) as the sole source of carbon and energy were isolated from different mixed cultures of soil bacterial populations that had been acclimatized to 2,4,6-TCP. These strains released 3 mol of chloride ion from 1 mol of 2,4,6-TCP during the complete degradation of the TCP. Of these strains, P. pickettii DTP0602 in high-cell-density suspension cultures dechlorinated various chlorophenols (CPs). Cells that were preincubated with 2,4,6-TCP converted isomers of 4-CP to the corresponding chloro-p-hydroquinones, but those preincubated with 4-CP converted CPs lacking a chlorine atom(s) at the o position to isomers of chlorocatechol. The ability of DTP0602 to dechlorinate 2,4,6-TCP was induced by 2,6-dichlorophenol, 2,3,6- and 2,4,6-TCP, and 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol and was repressed in the presence of succinate or glucose.

Hand differences on a sensory test using tactual stimuli.

To examine hand differences in the sensory feeling of texture, 35 subjects made sensory evaluations with the left and the right hands to a tactile stimulus (sponge rubber) and also marked on a 5-point Likert scale 50 adjectives which represented various tactual feelings. Factor analyses, applied to the data of 35 subjects, showed that the left hand related more to a keen and sharp dimension while the right hand related more to a mild and soft dimension of the tactile stimulus. Possible relations of these hand differences in sensitivity to hemisphere functioning were discussed.

[Evaluation of urgent treatment for impacted bile duct stones].

One hundred and forty-four urgent treatments for acute obstructive suppurative cholangitis (AOSC), acute obstructive cholangitis (AOC), or/and acute pancreatitis caused by impacted bile duct stones were performed for eight years from 1984 to 1991. The breakdown of these treatments are as follows. [table: see text] It was not easy to diagnose every severe case of AOSC. As a result, however, endoscopy was very effective both in diagnosis and treatment. Concerning patients with thinner bile duct, endoscopic drainage was useful than percutaneous drainage. We prefer ENBD to EST followed by basket extraction of bile duct stones in an emergency state. ENBD is a rather easy technique even for beginners of ERCP, and is less invasive. The life-saving effect of ENBD is not inferior to that of EST.

A case of empyema developing thirteen years after a pneumonectomy treated using pedicled omentum which was followed by intestinal obstruction.

Postpneumonectomy empyema is one of the most difficult complications for the thoracic surgeon to treat. We report herein a case of a 62 year old diabetic man who developed empyema 13 years after a pneumonectomy for cancer, which was successfully treated using an omental pedicle flap. Postoperatively, the chest would healed uneventfully, however, a bowel obstruction developed which was subsequently treated by removing the remnant omentum that had adhered to the bowel.

Left-hand preference in frightened mother monkeys in taking up their babies.

The hand preference of mother monkeys taking up their babies in an emergency situation was investigated. When a relaxed mother monkey was frightened, the hand used to take up a baby and flee was monitored with eight pairs of Old World Monkeys of three different species. Each mother-child pair was given 17-32 trials, all mothers showed a left-hand preference in this behavior.

3-keto-5 alpha-steroid-delta 4-dehydrogenase from Nocardia corallina: purification and characterization.

The inducible 3-keto-5 alpha-steroid-delta 4-dehydrogenase of Nocardia corallina was purified to homogeneity using affinity chromatography on 19-nortestosterone-17-acetoxyaminoethyl Sepharose 4B. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, gel filtration and spectral analysis of flavin suggest that the purified dehydrogenase is a monomeric protein of Mr 60,000 containing one flavin. It has a typical absorption spectrum of flavoprotein with maxima at 457, 375, and 277 nm. The values shifted to 470 and 395 nm on binding of 19-nortestosterone. The enzyme catalyzed the dehydrogenation of 3-keto-5 alpha-steroid at the 4- and 5-position, e.g. the conversion of 5 alpha-androst-1-ene-3,17-dione to 1,4-androstadiene-3,17-dione with the reduction of phenazine methosulfate. The substrate 3-ketosteroid has essentially the 5 alpha-configuration. The enzyme did not reduce potassium ferricyanide but did reduce cytochrome c at a moderate rate, and exhibited only a weak steroid oxidase activity. Stereochemical study demonstrated that the enzyme abstracts the 4 beta, 5 alpha-hydrogens of the substrate as a hydrogen ion through a protein-based reaction and as a hydride ion by transfer to FAD, respectively. The enzyme oxidizes a wide variety of 3-keto-5 alpha-steroids but not 3 beta-hydroxysteroid. The dehydrogenase also catalyzed steroid transhydrogenation between 3-keto-5 alpha-steroid and 3-keto-1,4-diene-steroid. The properties of this enzyme are compared with those of 3-keto-steroid-delta 1-dehydrogenase.

Selective medium containing fosfomycin, nalidixic acid, and culture supernatant of Rhodococcus equi for isolation of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis.

FNR medium containing fosfomycin, nalidixic acid, bovine blood and culture supernatant of Rhodococcus equi was prepared by the present authors, and the medium did not inhibit growth of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis but completely hampered the growth of Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. The culture supernatant of R. equi facilitated detection of suspected colonies of C. pseudotuberculosis due to synergistic hemolysis. Rate of isolation of the organisms (from the trachea, larynx and nasal cavity of 16 slaughtered sheep with caseous abscess in the lung) was higher with FNR, the selective medium, than with nonselective medium. The selective medium was thus found to be useful for isolation of C. pseudotuberculosis from sheep.

Diurnal changes in plasma melatonin and the timing of reproductive onset in anestrous sheep fed melatonin.

Seasonally anestrous Suffolk ewes (n = 28) were randomly divided into 5 groups and treated with varying doses of melatonin as follows; Groups C (n = 4), M1 (n = 6), M2 (n = 6), M3 (n = 6), M4 (n = 6) of ewes were fed pellets containing 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 mg melatonin, respectively, daily for 60 days from May 17 (Day 0). Following feeding of the pellets at 13.00 hr plasma levels of melatonin rapidly increased reaching the peak values within 30 min, which ranged from 92.0 to 292.7 pg/ml and were highly correlated with the dose of melatonin administered (r = 0.986, P less than 0.01). Maximum dose of melatonin (4 mg) produced an increase of plasma melatonin similar in magnitude to nocturnal peaks of endogenous secretion. The onset of ovulatory cyclicity, assessed from plasma progesterone profiles, was advanced by melatonin administration. The mean +/- SEM intervals from the commencement of melatonin treatment until the onset of ovulatory cyclicity were 53.0 +/- 5.8, 53.6 +/- 2.5, 42.0 +/- 5.6 and 44.3 +/- 4.3 days for the Groups M1, M2, M3 and M4, respectively, which were shorter (M1, P less than 0.05; M2, M3 & M4, P less than 0.01) than that for the Group C (72.5 +/- 1.4 days). The melatonin treatment also suppressed, in a dose related manner, the rise in plasma prolactin under the lengthening photoperiod. We conclude that the dose-related efficacy of melatonin could be ascribed to the difference in the diurnal profiles of circulating melatonin.

[A case of left main bronchial rupture due to bronchocath tube].

A 68-year-old woman underwent a right upper lobectomy for lung cancer. After resection, we noticed the left main bronchial rupture due to bronchocath tube (polyvinyl chloride double lumen tube). The lesion of the rupture was repaired by interrupted sutures with 4-0 prolene. Subsequent course of the patient was uneventful. Tracheobronchial rupture is rare complication of intubation with polyvinyl chloride double lumen tube. There are 6 cases of this complication last five years in Japan. The cause and prevention of this complications are described. It is important to use an adequate tube size, to prevent malposition of the tube and overinflation of the bronchial balloon.

[A case of localized pleural mesothelioma].

A case of localized pleural mesothelioma is reported. A 49-year-old man was operated for coin lesion detected on routine chest X-ray. A tumor arose from the visceral pleura of right lower lobe and was pedunculated. Size of the tumor was 4 x 3 x 3 cm. Cut surface of the tumor was solid and yellowish white. Pathological diagnosis was fibrous type of the pleural mesothelioma. The patient is well and has no sign of recurrence for three years. There are 123 cases of localized pleural mesothelioma including our case in Japan. Five in 78 cases which was diagnosed to be benign histologically at operation, had recurrence later. It is important to follow up strictly for long term.
