Pressure distribution using tissue conditioners on simplified edentulous ridge models. Part 1: The influence of the height of the residual ridge.

This study was conducted to measure the changes of pressure distribution over time on the denture-bearing mucosal surface resulting from relining the intaglio surface of dentures with tissue conditioners. Pressure sensors of electrostatic capacitance variation were used to detect changes on three models of different residual mandibular ridge height. It is suggested that the shrinkage of tissue conditioners influences the dimensional accuracy of a dynamic impression technique.

Cleansing efficacy of commercial denture cleansers: ability to reduce Candida albicans biofilm activity.

A simple method to measure Candidal biofilm activity using pH change of Stomastat was developed and used to evaluate the efficacy of 11 commercial denture cleansers on Candida albicans biofilm. The initial number of yeasts inoculated correlated with the pH value of Stomastat after both 24- and 30-hour incubation periods (r=0.992; r=0.988, respectively; P<.01), which supported the method's validity. The ability of the cleansing agents to decrease fungal biofilm activity varied depending upon the components of the agents. In general, peroxide denture cleansers, a disinfectant, and one enzyme cleanser were more efficacious than the other types tested in this study.

Pressure distribution using tissue conditioners on simplified edentulous ridge models. Part 2: The influence of the powder particle size and ethanol content.

The distribution of pressure changes over time at the denture periphery and the residual ridge crest were measured to evaluate the influence of powder particle size and ethanol content in liquid of tissue conditioners used for a dynamic impression technique. The study suggested that the shrinkage of tissue conditioners over time influenced the adaptation at the denture periphery when the components of tissue conditioners were varied for use as a dynamic impression material.

Techniques for making spacers in interstitial brachytherapy for tongue cancer.

The use of a spacer has been recommended in interstitial brachytherapy for tongue cancer to reduce the radiation dose to the mandible. This article describes the development of two types of acrylic resin spacers, a mouth guard-type spacer for dentate patients, and a replica denture-type spacer for edentulous patients. These spacers can be used without suture retention and are comfortable for patients.

Perforation of dental gloves during prosthodontic treatments as assessed by the conductivity and water inflation tests.

The incidence of latex glove perforation during prosthodontic treatment was investigated on 122 occasions using two methods, a conductivity test and a water inflation test. Latex glove perforation was detected in 38.5% of the treatments by the conductivity test and in 27.9% by the water inflation test. The perforation went unrecognized in 74.7% of the occurrences (35/47 incidents) using the conductivity test and in 64.7% (22/34) when the water inflation test was used. Of the total 55 glove perforations, 21 perforations were detected only by conductivity test, 3 were detected only by the water inflation test, and 31 perforations were detected by both methods, which suggested that the conductivity test is more sensitive than the water inflation test for the detection of glove perforation. The results of this research suggested that even when latex gloves are worn, the risk to prosthodontists of exposure to body fluids remains in four of every six treatments, often without the awareness of the prosthodontist.

Influence of thickness on the linear dimensional change, warpage, and water uptake of a denture base resin.

This study examined the influence of thickness on changes (linear dimensions, warpage, and water uptake) in a denture base resin following two processing methods (heat polymerization and microwave activation). Changes were influenced by both processing method and thickness. These findings suggested that the processing method and denture base resin thickness are important factors in the dimensional change of acrylic resin dentures, and that the overall dimensional denture base changes are the result of localized changes.
