From pooled data of many feeding trials with kids fed various types of solid foods from 37 days of age and slaughtered thereafter, relationships between such independent variables as age, cumulative intake of solid food, weight gain, and/or final body weight and such dependent variables as weights and such dependent variables as weights of stomach-compartments, heart, liver, kidneys, and spleen were analyzed. Growth of forestomachs, and especially rumen mucosa, relative to body weight was stimulated only in feeding periods of solid foods. Gain, intake of solid food, and final body weight were the best predictors for growth of forestomach-compartments, liver, and heart, respectively. Correlations were large between ruminoreticulum weight and liver weight and among weights of forestomach-compartments. Second degree polynomials were fitted to predict the curvilinear relationships between solid-food intake and either ruminoreticulum weight or rumen mucosal weight, and a linear equation was fitted to predict the relationship between solid-food intake and liver weight. Feeding of roughage increased rumen muscular and omasal weights. Growth of the rumen under stimulation of solid-food intake may be regulated by the same biological factors contributing to increased growth rate of the whole animal. In this situation, growth of the rumen may be correlated closely with growth of the liver.

A physical examination with detailed dermatological examination was made on 28 Japanese male workers, 22 to 63 years old, who had been exposed to arsenic for one to 24 years, in processes manufacturing lead arsenate, calcium arsenate and so on to be used as insecticides. Many corn-like punctate keratoses were seen on the palms and soles of 7 workers. The histopathological features in 6 specimens of punctate keratoses of palms and other regions of 4 workers were hyperkeratosis, acanthosis and elongation of rete ridge, but no malignant changes, although there were mild disorderly arrangements in part of stratum malpighii. Multiple lesions of sharply demarcated dullred patch with scale were found on the trunk and extremities of 3 workers. These lesions histopathologically showed the typical feature of Bowen's disease. Characteristic bronze pigmentation on the trunk and extremities was seen in 6 workers, and 5 of these 6 workers showed tiny normal or depigmented skin (raindrops) throughout the involved areas. These corn-like punctate keratoses mainly on the palms and soles, multiple Bowen's disease and diffuse bronze pigmentation with raindrop areas of hypopigmentation on the trunk and extremities were manifest almost in the same individuals, and it was concluded that they were characteristic cutaneous symptoms of chronic arsenical poisoning. There was no correlation between the intensity of cutaneous manifestations and the term of exposure to arsenic. Cutaneous manifestations due to arsenic were generally recognized as follows: diffuse pigmentation appears at first in one to two years after exposure to arsenic, then punctate hyperkeratotic lesions appear mainly on the palms and soles, and Bowen's lesions occur after several years or more. The use of arsenic has been abandoned in this factory since January, 1971. Diffuse bronze pigmentation now seems to be considerably lightened, as long time has passed after exposure to arsenic. However, since punctate hyperkeratotic lesions on the palms, soles and others may, though rarely, undergo malignant transformations, new lesions of Bowen's disease may further occur and these lesions may develop to invasive squamous cell carcinoma, physical examinations of the workers exposed to arsenic should be continued and careful observation of them is necessary for the future.

Intra-abomasally administered 1,2-propanediol, 150 to 160 g per Japanese meat-type kid in 3 to 4 wk, increased the ratio of rumen to body weight, of rumen to total stomach, and of rumen mucosa to muscle over the control which received only water. Intra-abomasal administration of glycerol, glucose, fructose, 1.3-butanediol, xylitol, lactic acid, sodium propionate, or sodium butyrate showed no increases over the control. Only propanediol chemically stimulated rumen mucosal growth. Intraruminal administration of propanediol showed the same stimulation as intra-abomasal. Intraruminal administration of minerals or of polyethylene glycol (Carbowax 4,000) and intraruminal insertion of plastic cubes were not effective, but the latter showed a cooperative effect to accelerate rumen growth with propanediol stimulation. Average fresh tissue weights of rumen mucosa in kids of 2.7 kg body weight of control, of propanediol-treatment, and of plastic cube plus propanediol-treatment were 6.4, 10.4, and 14.8 g, and those of rumen muscle were 7.9, 8.3, and 11.1 g. Propanediol may be involved directly in the local control of rumen epithelial growth.
