[Epidemiologic study of carcinoma in situ of the cervix].

During the period from 1950 to 1983, 1633 patients with cervical carcinoma in situ (CIS) were treated at the Cancer Institute Hospital, Tokyo. These cases were retrospectively investigated to determine the relation between the epidemiologic features and social phenomena. The number of patients with CIS tends to increase year by year. The incidence of CIS tends to be larger in the younger age group. Delay in the age of primiparity, a lower incidence of multiparas and a higher incidence of artificial abortion were seen in the CIS patients. Recurrence was seen in 0.4% of the CIS patients, and the recurrence site was most frequently the vaginal stump.

[An autopsy case of Shy-Drager syndrome preceded by a urinary disturbance for over 20 years].

An autopsy case of Shy-Drager syndrome preceded by urinary disturbance for over 20 years was reported. A 43-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of urinary disturbance and orthostatic hypotension. At the age of 19 she developed urinary disturbance with polyuria and retention. These symptoms were getting worse with years, and at the age of 33 she was diagnosed to have neurogenic bladder of uninhibited type. During her hospital course her symptom became worse, and by the age of 42 she showed marked dysarthria, disturbance of smooth pursuit eye movement, Horner's syndrome, marked rigidity and tremor of four extremities, generalized hyperreflexia, marked limb and truncal ataxia, neurogenic bladder and orthostatic hypotension. Serial brain CT scan revealed progressive brain stem and cerebellar atrophy with clinical course. Severe autonomic nervous system dysfunctions were also documented. She died of respiratory failure at the age of 43. On autopsy, brain stem and cerebellum showed marked atrophy macroscopically. Microscopically marked depletion of neuron was seen in the substantia nigra, pontine nuclei, inferior olive, Purkinje cells, the intermediolateral column of spinal cord and Onuf's nucleus of S2. Although numerous cases of Shy-Drager syndrome have been reported in the past, there is no case which developed this syndrome after urinary disturbance of over 20 year's duration. We should be alert to observe the cases with longstanding urinary disturbances in order to not overlook degenerative disorders as exemplified in this case.

Non-conjugate monocular optokinetic nystagmus in cats.

Binocular eye movement during horizontal monocular optokinetic nystagmus was studied in cats. When the stimulus pattern was moved slowly (at 1-10 deg/sec in temporonasal direction and 1 deg/sec in nasotemporal, averages of four cats), the gain (slow phase velocity/stimulus velocity) of the covered eye was significantly lower than that of the seeing eye. At the faster stimulus velocities, these differences of gain decreased.

Light and scanning electron microscopic studies on wrinkles in aged persons' skin.

Wrinkles in six aged persons (67-82 years of age) have been investigated by light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). There are two types of wrinkles. One is a deep wrinkle which develops on the sun-exposed skin and does not disappear on stretching (permanent wrinkle). The LM and SEM showed less elastotic change in the upper dermis in the area of wrinkle than in that of the surroundings. The other type is a shallow wrinkle which develops on sun-protected skin and disappears on stretching (temporary wrinkle). The LM and SEM showed the decrease or loss of the elastic fibres in the papillary dermis as seen in ageing skin.

Multisystem degeneration: drugs and square wave jerks.

We studied a 55-year-old woman with macrosquare wave jerks and macrosaccadic oscillations with a vertical component. The oscillations almost completely disappeared after administration of diazepam, clonazepam, thiamylal, or phenobarbital. A disorder of GABAergic tonic inhibitory system from the substantia nigra to superior colliculus probably plays an important the pathogenesis of these abnormal ocular movements. role in the pathogenesis of these abnormal ocular movements.

[Study on suppressed uptake by the liver in 67Ga scintigraphy].

During the past 3 years, we have performed 1525 studies of 67Ga scintigraphy and 38 cases of these showed suppressed liver uptake; 19 cases after chemotherapy, 13 cases with liver dysfunction and 6 cases with competitive blockade. Many cases in chemotherapy used cyclophosphamide and vincristine, and were performed 67Ga scan within 1 week after chemotherapy. In cases showed suppressed uptake by liver after chemotherapy, serum Fe was markedly increased and UIBC was markedly decreased (p less than 0.01). This suggested that serum Fe influenced suppressed uptake by liver more than carrier-protein, disturbed hepatic cells, and receptors.
