Correction of pneumotachograph signal for changes in viscosity during nitrogen washout.

Changes in gas viscosity during the nitrogen washout test will affect pneumotachograph measurements. A digital correction technique, using estimates of viscosity derived from measurements of gas concentration, has been described and was examined in this study. The pneumotachograph gain varied directly with argon concentration (coefficient of correlation = 0.995, P less than 0.01) indicating that a simple correction was legitimate. This was tested with an in vitro model, giving very consistent estimates of volume (FRC) despite variations in the ventilation pattern, which were slightly underestimated due to incomplete mixing in the system. Alveolar mixing efficiency (AME) was also reproducible but, like studies in man, fell when low tidal volumes were used. In a repeatability study in six volunteers, examined six times on each of two days, FRC and AME were also reproducible (average coefficient of variation within subjects of 4.97% and 4.34% respectively), considerably better than another reported study using conventional flow measurements. This method appears to be a useful addition to existing techniques for studying nitrogen washout.

Effect of vagotomy on the breathing pattern and exercise ability in emphysematous patients.

1. The potential value of right vagotomy for the relief of breathlessness has been explored in five patients with emphysema. Two patients had symptomatic improvement, two had minor symptomatic improvement, and one was unchanged. 2. Exercise ventilation was not noticeably depressed by unilateral right vagotomy in the two patients investigated fully, but the pattern of breathing was altered. After vagotomy, breathing was deeper, and the rise in the frequency of breathing with exercise was depressed. 3. After right vagotomy the response to rebreathing carbon dioxide also consisted of slower deeper breaths. 4. Right vagotomy sometimes appears to remove an influence preventing slow deep breathing and exacerbating dyspnoea. 5. Results of bilateral pulmonary denervation, attempted in one patient, were complicated by the need for left thoracotomy, which removed any possible beneficial effects.

[Distribution study using 57Co-, 51Cr-, 111In- and 99mTc-bleomycin in mice with a solid Ehrlich carcinoma].

From the comparative studies of 57Co-, 51Cr-, 111In- and 99mTc-Bleomycin using 282 solid Ehrlich-carcinoma-bearing mice, 57Co was found to be the most suitable bleomycin preparation for tumorscintigraphy. The results obtained by 111In-Bleomycin of linear tumor cell absorption indicates a possible use of 111In-Bleomycin as an agent for objective histological differentiation also in cells previously treated with therapeutic agents.
