Ganglioneuroma of the spinal cord.

This report describes a 2-year-old boy who harbored an intramedullary ganglioneuroma involving almost the entire length of the spinal cord. The terminology, pathology, and neurobiological behavior of this tumor is discussed.

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy in Chinese: incidence and significance.

Histological sections of 210 randomly selected autopsy brains and 49 consecutive autopsy cases of spontaneous intracerebral haemorrhage in the Chinese population aged over 40 years were examined by H&E and congo red stain with and without polarized light. In the randomly selected group, 10% of cases are positive for cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) while 8.2% of cases are positive in the group with haemorrhage. The incidence is strongly age-related. Compared with Western figures. Chinese are less frequently and less severely affected by CAA. Although CAA does account for some cases of spontaneous intracerebral haemorrhage, it cannot account for the high incidence of cerebral haemorrhage among Chinese. Its significance in Chinese is much lower than in Caucasians.

An autopsy study of pulmonary thromboembolism in Hong Kong Chinese.

A retrospective study of autopsied material in the last 15 yrs is documented an increasing incidence of pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) in Hong Kong Chinese. The incidence of significant PTE increased from 0.58% in the first 5 yr period to 2.08% in recent years. The topographic features and characteristics of these PTE patients are analysed and the factors contributing to the changes are discussed.

An epithelial cyst in the cerebellopontine angle. Case report.

A case of a benign epithelial cyst in the posterior cranial fossa is described. It had the unique histological feature of a double-layered cuboidal epithelial lining. Detailed immunohistochemical and electron microscopic studies supported an endodermal origin. The differential diagnosis and the histogenesis of epithelial cysts in the central nervous system are discussed.

Benign metastasizing meningioma.

A patient with an asymptomatic intracranial meningioma was found at autopsy to have multiple pulmonary metastases. Both the meningeal and pulmonary tumors were histologically benign. Only five other patients with apparently benign metastasizing meningiomas have been described.

An unusual complication of silastic dural substitute: case report.

A case is presented in which a patient developed an unusual complication after the use of Silastic dural substitute. In 1983, the patient underwent removal of a meningioma with the involved dura. Five years later, he developed around the graft material a very thick connective tissue capsule, which simulated a recurrent meningioma clinically and radiologically.

The pathological spectrum of desmoplastic infantile gangliogliomas.

A rare supratentorial neuroepithelial tumour in a 10-month-old girl is described. It was characterized by its voluminous size, a predominant leptomeningeal growth pattern with intense desmoplasia and divergent differentiation along astrocytic, neuronal and Schwann cell lines. The differential diagnoses are discussed with special reference to the recently described clinicopathological entity of desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma.

Undiagnosed tuberculosis in hospitalized patients--an autopsy survey.

Tuberculosis (TB) causes unnecessary deaths because of failure to diagnose and treat what is today a curable disease. A retrospective study was carried out in a general hospital to assess the magnitude of undiagnosed tuberculosis in hospitalized patients. Sixty-three cases of active tuberculosis, 39 of which were diagnosed only at autopsy, were found among 1306 autopsy cases during a three year study period. The reasons for the failure of diagnosis are discussed. For a correct diagnosis, the post-mortem examination must be systematic and include bacteriological and histological studies.

Type I familial amyloid polyneuropathy in a Chinese family.

A Chinese family with at least 3 members having the typical clinical picture of type I familial amyloid polyneuropathy is presented. The pathological features, including the immunohistochemical typing of the amyloid deposits, are described and the literature is briefly reviewed.

Sparganosis of the spinal cord. Case report.

Sparganosis of the spinal cord is a rare disease: only two cases have previously been described. A third case of spinal sparganosis is reported in which a sparganum was removed from the central canal of the patient's spinal cord. The clinical presentation and pathology are described. A brief review of the life cycle of the Spirometra is given and the possible mode of infestation is discussed.

Cancer incidence patterns in the Denver metropolitan area in relation to the Rocky Flats plant.

This study considered whether geographic patterns of cancer suggest any relation with Rocky Flats, a facility located near Denver, Colorado that processes plutonium components for nuclear weapons. The study was based upon cancer incidence data for the years 1969 to 1971 and 1979 to 1981, and census tract data for 1970 and 1980. Data for 1979 to 1981 showed little association with Rocky Flats, even though considerations of the timing of releases of radioactivity from the plant and cancer latency indicate that data from this period should be more indicative of an effect of Rocky Flats than data from the earlier period. The explanatory variable found to be most closely associated with cancer incidence was an urban factor measured by distance from the Colorado State Capitol located in downtown Denver. Indications of correlations of cancer incidence with proximity to Rocky Flats largely disappeared for both time periods when analyses were stratified by this urban factor. This negative finding was not surprising because persons living in the vicinity of the plant have been shown to have no more plutonium in their tissues than persons living in other areas of Colorado.
