Assessment of uteroplacental hemodynamics in complicated pregnancy.

Examination of the uteroplacental hemodynamics was performed on 109 occasions in women admitted to the hospital in the third trimester because of various complications of pregnancy. The radioactive tracer 113m In was injected intravenously and the build-up and equilibrium times were measured over the placenta, myometrium and heart. The placental build-up times were most informative, with prolonged values being recorded in about one quarter of these cases. When those extending beyond three minutes were further studied, they were usually found to be associated with severe complications of pregnancy. This did not obtain in cases with shorter placental build-up times.

Serial transplants of DMBA-induced mammary tumors in Fischer rats as model system for human breast cancer. IV. Parallel changes of biopterin and melatonin indicate interactions between the pineal gland and cellular immunity in malignancy.

Nocturnal (23.00-07.00 h) urinary melatonin and total biopterin (tBI; after acidic oxidation of reduced biopterins) were analyzed during the growth of two passages of a mammary tumor line in female F344 Fischer rats. In addition, nocturnal (02.00-03.00 h) peak concentrations of pineal melatonin in plasma were analyzed when tumors had reached comparable average tumor volumes of 25-30 cm3. Since tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) is produced by murine macrophages in response to interferon-gamma released by activated T lymphocytes, measurements of tBI can serve to estimate the state of cellular immunity. At passage 2, a slow-growing localized carcinosarcoma, tBI showed a progressing increase during tumor growth reaching more than 200% (p < 0.05-0.005) of controls by the end of the experiment. Urinary and plasma melatonin were elevated by 30-50% (p < 0.05) and 42% respectively. At passage 12, a fast-growing metastasizing sarcoma, a depression of about 20-30% was found for tBI (p < 0.05) and urinary melatonin (p < 0.025); plasma melatonin was depleted by 70% (p < 0.005). Parallel changes of both parameters at each tumor passage indicate a close link between the pineal hormone melatonin and cellular immunity. The opposite trends observed at the two passages indicate a clear stimulation of the immune system and the pineal gland at early but inhibition at advanced stages of cancer.

Immunoreactive relaxin in seminal plasma of man.

Relaxin in seminal fluid was determined radioimmunologically in 238 andrological patients with various ejaculate qualities. In 52 cases, a second ejaculate was examined 4 to 6 weeks later. Relaxin was found present in each ejaculate sample. There was no significant difference between the relaxin values of the reexamined cases and the original samples, indicating little fluctuation. Statistical correlations between relaxin levels in seminal plasma and clinical data, ejaculate, and hormonal parameters could not be established. Only cases with low fructose values showed some correlation with low relaxin levels in seminal plasma.

Immunoreactive ubiquitin in human seminal plasma.

The polypeptide ubiquitin, up to now almost exclusively discovered in intracellular spaces, was measured immunologically in a total of 187 samples of human seminal plasma. The values were between 1.83 and 19.11 micrograms/ml. In spermatozoa ubiquitin was detected too; the values, however, were significantly lower than in the seminal plasma. The origin and function of ubiquitin in human seminal plasma is still unclear. The possible role of ubiquitin in reproduction is discussed.

[Relaxin in amniotic fluid and serum of pregnant patients].

Relaxin was measured in serum and amniotic fluid of 136 pregnant women between the 12th and 38th gestational week by means of a new human relaxin-RIA. The pregnancies consisted of 111 pathology-free single fetuses, 10 with rhesus incompatibility, 7 with chromosomal aberration and 8 with sonographic diagnosed abnormalities. Relaxin could be detected in all samples tested the levels being ten times lower in amniotic fluid compared to serum. Serum relaxin levels showed a slight but not statistically significant decrease with increasing gestational age, in amniotic fluid relaxin values were consistent over the course of pregnancy. The ratio of amniotic fluid to serum relaxin displayed a statistically significant increase from the 12th to 23rd week of pregnancy. Individual courses of relaxin concentration in amniotic fluid revealed only low intra-individual variations but distinct inter-individual differences.
