Organ weights in nonagenarians.

The main organs in a series of 39 nonagenarians were weighed at autopsy. The weights varied widely from subject to subject. Compared with average weights in younger subjects, the brains, livers, spleens, kidneys and lungs weighed less than usual in the majority of nonagenarians examined. However, the hearts often were heavier than normal and many of them were hypertrophied.

Origins of British geriatrics.

We may see from the foregoing account that British physicians have played a major part in the history of geriatric medicine. Other countries have no counterpart to J H Sheldon of Wolverhampton, whose work on the social medicine of old age was so fundamental, or George Adams of Belfast, to whom we owe such a debt of knowledge about cerebrovascular disease in the aged, or to Marjory Warren and the other pioneers mentioned above. Long may this tradition continue.

Oral temperature range in old age.

(1) The oral temperature of 105 females aged 61-100 years has been taken with an electric thermometer. (2) The readings obtained ranged from 30 to 37.2 degrees C. (3) Median reading of the group was 36.0 degress C. (4) There was no close relation between age and temperature. (5) Some correlation was found between oral readings and existing room temperature. (6) The figure of 37.0 degrees C is not a reliable normal in aged subjects.
