A clinical evaluation of the american optical SR III subjective refractor.

The American Optical SR III Subjective Refraction System is a recent addition to the vision care field. Subjective refractions were performed, using the SR III, on 275 eyes of 139 subjects (clinic patients, optometry students, staff members, and faculty members) and the results were compared to clinical refractive data. Although subjective refraction results were found to compare favorably to the clinical results, the instrument was found to be limited to the extent that there is no provision for binocular vision testing and no provision for near vision testing.

Etiology of astigmatism.

A large amount of evidence suggests that astigmatism is hereditary. Other evidence indicates that the prevalence of astigmatism varies widely between and within racial groups and that both the direction and the amount of astigmatism tend to vary as a function of age and in response to environmental influences.

Are visual anomalies related to reading ability?

Although reading ability is known to be related to a large number of factors, when a child having a reading problem is brought to an optometrist he (or she) has the responsibility of determining whether or not a visual anomaly may be a major or contributing cause of the reading problem. A review of the literature indicates that myopia is consistently associated with good reading performance; and that hypermetropia, astigmatism, lateral phorias, poor fusional vergences, strabismus and color vision anomalies tend to be associated with poorer than average reading performance. Well-designed and well-controlled studies are needed, particularly concerning the effect on reading ability of the correction of visual anomalies. Until such studies have been done, any child who has a reading problem deserves a thorough optometric or ophthalmologic examination and the correction of any visual anomalies found.

What causes astigmatism?

Although spectacles were invented in the 13th century, methods of testing for astigmatism have been developed only within the past one hundred years. Even today, the etiological factors responsible for corneal astigmatism are not well understood. A mechanism which may account for the existence of corneal astigmatism is proposed, on the basis of data concerning changes in astigmatism with age, racial variations in astigmatism and changes in astigmatism due to the wearing of contact lenses.

The role of the technician in optometric practice.

Members of the Indiana Optometric Association were asked to rate each of the duties which Indiana University optometric technician students are currently taught to perform. Rated on a four point scale from most desirable to undesirable, the duties deemed most important by respondents were those having to do with the dispensing of glasses and contact lenses as well as the usual receptionist and secretarial duties. The duties receiving the lowest ratings were keratometry and tonometry. However, there is good general agreement between the school and the profession concerning the content of the optometric technician program.
