Family therapy: exploring the role of the CPN.

This article discusses the extent to which community psychiatric nurses (CPNs) practise family therapy. The author, after offering definitions of family therapy and discussing some of the models of the approach, suggests that although many CPNs will be conversant in the theory, only a minority feel confident to use in practice what is increasingly being seen as a specialisation in its own right.

Representational systems in counselling.

The theories of neuro-linguistic programming are becoming more popular in shaping the approaches of nurses to counselling. The use of one facet of these theories, primary representational systems, is explored here. Examining the case of an imaginary patient, the author shows how the primary representational systems of patients and health workers can create problems if in disharmony, and how a proper understanding can lead to increased empathy and more constructive dialogue.

The role of community mental health workers.

This article compares the work and skills of mental health social workers with those of community psychiatric nurses, through a review of the literature in the field. The literature reveals a mixed picture of the work of the two groups, describing subjective experiences of the work of each, often from the point of view of other professionals, particularly doctors.
