In a prospective study of 185 players attached to 10 British rugby clubs, 151 injuries were recorded among 98 of them (53%) during a single season. Forwards sustained significantly more injuries than backs. The standard of rugby, players' body weights, degree of fitness, and presence of joint hypermobility did not affect the risk of injury. The leg was the most common site of injury. Head and neck injuries were significantly more common when play was static and on wet pitches. Scrummaging accounted for no neck injuries. Almost half the injuries occurred during the last quarter of games. Foul play might have caused as many as 47 (31%) of all reported injuries. Complete eradication of deliberately dangerous play would considerably reduce the high incidence of injuries in this sport.

In a detailed retrospective analysis of 81 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), elevated serum "liver enzymes" were recorded in 45 (55%) subjects. In 9 cases, the cause was non-hepatic and in 14 cases liver dysfunction was probably drug induced. Aspirin was the most common offender. Of the remaining 22 patients, 3 had congested livers secondary to heart failure and 19 had no obvious cause for liver dysfunction other than SLE itself. Liver histology was reviewed in 7 of these 19 patients. An inflammatory infiltrate of the portal areas was seen in 5, fatty liver in one and chronic active hepatitis in one. The frequency of liver dysfunction and the associated portal inflammation support the view that subclinical liver disease is a concomitant feature of SLE.
Vitamin E or tocopherol, a known antioxidant, may play a role in the etiology of chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease. This study examined both "internal" (lipids, lipoproteins, and apoproteins) and "external" (dietary components, physical activity, and body mass index) factors which may influence plasma alpha-tocopherol and gamma-tocopherol levels. Analyses were done using dietary questionnaires and plasma obtained from 65 nonsmoking male volunteers aged 30-59 years. Forty-six men did not take any supplements while 19 took supplements containing vitamin E. A positive correlation (r = 0.32; P < 0.01) between vitamin E intake and alpha-tocopherol status [(ratio of plasma alpha- or gamma-tocopherol/(total triglycerides + total cholesterol)] and a negative correlation (r = -0.33; P < 0.007) between intake and gamma-tocopherol status were observed. The main internal factors, or determinants, for plasma alpha-tocopherol for nonsupplement users were plasma triglycerides and apoproteins, apoA1 and apoB, but neither lipids nor apoproteins appeared to affect tocopherol levels in supplement users. External determinants of alpha-tocopherol status in nonsupplement users were vitamin E intake, total fat intake, and body mass index, while in supplement users only vitamin E intake was important. Both vitamin E intake and alcohol intake appeared to affect plasma gamma-tocopherol status in a negative manner.
Ethylene-bis-dithiocarbamate (EBDC) residues were determined as carbon disulfide (CS2) by an improved headspace gas-liquid chromatographic (GLC) procedure. Among 837 samples of 30 agricultural commodities tested, 43% contained residues above the detection limit for the method: 100% of broccoli samples; 80% of cabbage, kiwifruit, and grape samples; and 71% of cucumber samples. Most of the residues in kiwifruit were on or near the skin. Elimination of false-positive detections by the improved method was confirmed with kiwifruit in 2 independent procedures. Whole fruits were washed with 5% EDTA to remove surface residues of EBDC. Analysis of washes for CS2 by the headspace procedure after treatment with acidic stannous chloride and for ethylene thiourea by LC after prolonged treatment at 60 degrees C qualitatively identified the EDTA-soluble residues as EBDC. Although the improved method does not produce false-positive results, peak area responses of CS2 and the internal standard, thiophene, are influenced by chemical composition of the matrix. With matrixes high in sugar or lipids, the apparent CS2 content may be overestimated by 4-fold. Accurate determination of EBDC residues in these sample types requires appropriate adjustments to matrixes.
