Myopericarditis associated with ECHO virus type 3 infection--A case report.

A case with myopericarditis caused by type 3 ECHO virus was reported. The diagnosis was based on a significantly increased hemagglutination-inhibiting antibody titer (from 4:6 to 4:516) against type 3 ECHO virus in the acute and the convalescent phase. A 29-year-old male was hospitalized for chest pain and fever. The patient had congestive heart failure, pericardial effusion and temporarily appearing abnormal Q waves on his electrocardiogram in the acute phase all of which gradually improved within about 3 weeks. Cardiac catheterization performed on the 21st day of hospitalization disclosed normal coronary arteries, but a partially hypokinetic region was found in the left ventricular free wall. A right ventricular endomyocardial biopsy study revealed histological features of a small number of mononuclear cell infiltrations, myocardial cell necrosis and early fibrosis associated with an increased number of fibroblasts and ultrastructural changes including myocytolysis, vacuolation in sarcoplasm and dissociation of some intercalated discs. The endomyocardial biopsy study, and the electrocardiographic and cineangiographic findings in this case suggest that viral infection may induce clinical signs of myocardial infarction in the heart with normal coronary arteries.

Effect of pharmacological doses of estrogen on ovary-independent rat mammary carcinoma containing estrogen and progesterone receptors.

Mammary carcinoma induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats by multiple intragastric intubations of 7,12-dimethylbenz-(a)anthracene showed ovary-independent growth but contained estrogen receptors (ER) and progesterone receptors (Yoshida, Yoshida. Fukunishi, Sato, Okamoto, and Matsumoto, Cancer Res., 42: 2434-2439, 1982). Transplantable carcinoma (MT6) was obtained from dimethylbenz(a)anthracene-induced mammary carcinoma and then maintained in male rats. MT6 tumors with ER grew equally well in males, females, gonadectomized males, males given injections of bromocryptine (1 mg/day) or lisuride hydrogen maleate (50 micrograms/day), and gonadectomized males receiving smaller doses of 17 beta-estradiol (1 to 100 micrograms/2 days). However, the growth of MT6 was inhibited markedly by injection of a very large amount of 17 beta-estradiol (1 mg/2 days). Although transplanted MT6 tumors were ductal carcinoma with cribriform pattern with ER, tumors recurring after injection with 1 mg 17 beta-estradiol were found to be spindle cell carcinoma without ER, which could grow equally well in recipients treated with or without 1 mg 17 beta-estradiol. These observations suggest that the growth of ovary-independent MT6 tumors with ER and progesterone receptors is inhibited only by pharmacological doses of estrogens and that the loss of growth-inhibiting effect of pharmacological doses of estrogen of MT6 tumors occurs during high-dose estrogen treatment.

Postoperative evaluation of fecal continence after sphincter-preserving operations for rectal cancer.

Seventy-eight sphincter-preserving operations for rectal cancer were evaluated from the viewpoint of postoperative fecal continence. Operative procedures consisted of 39 anterior resections and 39 pull-through operations and Maunsell-Weir's operation. Postoperative fecal continence was evaluated by questionnaires and anorectal examinations including (1) the distance from the anal verge to the anastomosis, (2) the length of sensation to light touch in the anal canal, (3) electromyography of the sphincter, (4) internal sphincter reflex (5) pressure profile of the anal canal, and (6) barium enema radiography. Patients' evaluations of their continence were good when the distance of the anastomosis was over 5 cm from the anal verge, and mostly poor under 3 cm. Good or fair evaluations were obtained when the internal sphincter reflex or high pressure zone of the anal canal were preserved. Size of the reservoir was measured using a planimeter on the lateral view of the barium enema up to 6 cm from the upper margin of the anal canal. Good or fair evaluations were obtained when size was 30 cm2.

Computerized tomography of the brain in manic-depressive patients--a controlled study.

A computerized tomography (CT) of the brain was carried out on 40 manic-depressive patients and 40 controls in order to study the organic characteristics of the brain in manic-depressive psychosis. In the age group of 49 years and below, the left septum-caudate distance (LSC) showed a lower value in the manic-depressive group, but the other measurements for the ventricular system did not differ between both groups. The age group of 50 and over revealed a significant enlargement of maximum width of the interhemispheric fissure (IF) and maximum width between the sylvian fissure and inner skull (SFIS) in the manic-depressive group compared with the controls. The tendency to an enlargement of the third ventricle (HIV) and maximum width of the right anterior horn (RAH) was also seen in the manic-depressive patients. Cortical atrophy tended to appear in the temporal and occipital lobes earlier in the manic-depressive group than in the controls. The patients showing a cerebral asymmetry of the hemisphere in the manic-depressive group tended to show a reversed cerebral asymmetry.

Behavior of mast cells in periodontal ligament associated with experimental tooth movement in rats.

Orthodontic mechanical stress reduced the frequency of the appearance of mast cells stainable with toluidine blue in the periodontal ligament on both the pressure and tension sides of rat molar teeth. This effect was seen immediately after insertion of elastic bands between the first and second molars, and the greatest reduction in the number of mast cells stainable with toluidine blue was observed 15 min after insertion.

Unusual cytoplasmic bodies in Purkinje cells of the Gunn rats.

The fine structural changes of cerebellar Purkinje cells in Gunn rats were studied with electron microscope to clarify the neurotoxicity of bilirubin. The previous reports including mitochondrial change were confirmed. The new cytologic feature demonstrated in this study was the presence of two different types of unusual membranous cytoplasmic bodies (MCB). One type was the aggregation of rod-like structures which were enveloped in double membranes and contained homogeneous and electron-dense matrix. Another type was the whirled lamellar structure which appeared to be formed of the microtubules and its unit particles. These two different MCB may suggest the different neurotoxicity of bilirubin: the former may result from the accumulation product of bilirubin-lipid complex, the latter may reflect the abnormal process of the microtubular assembly induced by bilirubin.

A case report of venous aneurysm of the neck vein.

We treated a 37 year old woman with venous aneurysm along left side of the neck. In the beginning, she was asymptomatic and with increase in size of the venous aneurysm she experienced severe pain. Pathohistological examinations revealed a destructive change of the venous wall and thrombosis. Therefore, in cases of venous aneurysm along the neck, such aneurysm should probably be treated surgically to prevent the occurrence of pulmonary embolism.
