Managing motivation and developing job satisfaction in the health care work environment.

Motivation relies on internal/intrinsic and external factors to stimulate work-related behavior. This article presents an overview of Herzberg's motivation-hygiene theory and reports on the results of a study of 99 health service midmanagers. The participants completed a survey asking whether they believe in motivational factors and if they use them. Several of Herzberg's motivational factors were included (achievement, recognition, work itself, responsibility, advancement) plus several other motivational factors including money/pay, self-interest, seek a higher standard of living. Negative factors included guilt, threats, power, and control. This article presents motivation factors, such as achievement, recognition, work itself, responsibility, advancement, growth, self-interest, pay, and belief in successful outcome, that were presented to 99 mid-level health services administrators.

Use of the classical functions of management by health services midmanagers.

One of the main concerns of all devoted mid-level health care managers is to be successful on the job. Thus, this article looks at many of the managerial functions used by midmanagers to be successful in their position. One major question answered by this article is, "Do successful mid-level health service administrators actually use the classical functions of a manager and to what extent are they used?" It was found that the functions of a manager in fact are used, with problem solving being the most commonly used. The classic functions of a manager also were used extensively, with organizing, coordinating, planning, and directing being the top four functions used by health services midmanagers. It was found that males were more concerned with motivation and developing human relations while females were more concerned with planning. Both sexes indicated that oral communication and problem solving were top issues. Delegation of responsibility was reported to be used more than delegation of authority. Levels of formal education in management ranged from none to graduate degrees.

Developing successful performance appraisals through choosing appropriate words to effectively describe work.

For the health care manager, correct words are essential to describe work and can determine if performance appraisals are high quality, efficient, effective, objective, and fair. Work descriptors were assessed from performance appraisal forms, textbooks, and current literature with word lists presented, assessed, and reviewed. It was found that work descriptors are not always carefully selected and that health care managers should wisely select appropriate words to describe work in performance appraisals.

Smoking cessation: clinical steps to improve compliance.

Smoking tobacco contributes to and exacerbates many chronic diseases of aging, including hypertension, stroke, COPD, heart disease, and atherosclerosis. It is also associated with an increased risk of peptic ulcers and of cancers of the lungs and oral cavity. Older patients generally continue to smoke because of physiologic and psychological addiction to nicotine. Nicotine administration through gum or patch eases the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal for highly-tolerant patients. Detecting and treating alcohol abuse, depression, or life stress may then make it easier to motivate the patient to quit smoking. Physician advice combined with follow-up visits and phone calls has been shown to be one of most effective methods of getting patients to stop smoking.

Overcoming the loss of a love: preventing love addiction and promoting positive emotional health.

Counseling and clinical observations clarify views commonly made about the pain of breaking-up a love relationship. Anecdotal reports as presented in popular music, novels, movies, and television programs illustrate the public's general awareness of the emotional dilemma of ending a relationship. Love is a strong pleasurable emotional state. Behavioral and emotional problems can result from rejection and the pain due to the loss of a love. The term "love addiction" has been applied to persons who obsessively seek to regain the pleasurable love state which existed with a former love relationship. Dysfunctional emotional conditions such as distrust, feelings of rejection, loss of self-worth, deep-seated anger, feelings of failure, loss, and an array of other emotional distress and self-defeating behaviors arise in the emotionally hurt person. Emotional distress must be dealt with. Rational self-counseling and psychotherapy can be effective in helping a jilted person work through periods of distress and may help to reestablish emotional well being and good mental health. Counseling can assist the person in moving into new relationships, help the hurt person abandon dysfunctional behaviors and feelings, and aid the client in resuming a normal life.
