Long-term follow-up of patients with Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis infection and treated with Glucantime.

Seventy-nine patients with cutaneous (62) or mucosal (17) infection with Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis in Três Braços, Bahia, Brazil, were followed for at least 4 years after initiating treatment with antimony. Cutaneous relapses occurred in 6/62 (10%), mucosal relapse after cutaneous infection in 2/62 (3%), and mucosal relapse after mucosal disease in 2/17 (17%). It is concluded that relapse (cutaneous and mucosal) is rare after adequate antimony therapy and that no definite prediction of relapse (clinical, serological or by skin reaction) is possible.

Role of human recombinant GM-CSF in the prevention and treatment of leukopenia with special reference to infectious diseases.

Recombinant human GM-CSF has been shown to be effective in reversing severe neutropenic states associated with the underlying disease or caused by cytotoxic drugs, and during engraftment after bone marrow transplantation. Preliminary evidence supports the view that restoration of adequate myelopoiesis results in better control of infection. The use of rhGM-CSF in special infectious diseases to activate cell function is currently being studied. Preliminary in vitro and in vivo data allow high expectations for the usefulness of rhGM-CSF in contributing to the control of these diseases.

XX/"XO" sex determination system in a population of Peruvian owl monkey, Aotus.

The chromosome complement of a group of owl monkeys with typical pelagic features characteristic of Aotus inhabiting the upper Amazonian region in South America was analyzed by various band techniques. A diploid chromosome number of 2n = 52 is reconfirmed in the females. A Y-autosome translocation resulting in a complement of 2n = 51 in the males constitutes a unique XX/"XO" sex chromosome system in this population. Karotypic comparison of this Peruvian Aotus (2n - 52 female/51 male) with the Bolivian Aotus (2n = 50 female/49 male) shows the existence of a large degree of analogy of chromosome banding. However, complicated inter- and intra-karyotypic differences between the two chromosome races can be depicted, and substantiates our postulation that the owl monkey is an evolutionary actively diverging species.

Collaborative teaching. A strategy for interactive telecourses.

The use of telecommunication technology in nursing education is increasing dramatically. Interactive television courses are effective and efficient in overcoming barriers of distance and access. Faculty members using the technology find many opportunities for innovation and creativity as courses are implemented. The authors describe a nursing graduate course offered collaboratively between two schools of nursing.

The chromosome complement of an Aotus hybrid.

Two divergent haploid chromosome sets were encountered in the chromosome complement of laboratory-born Aotus. Comparison of G-banded chromosomes of this individual with seven other established G-banded Aotus karyotypes revealed that this monkey is a hybrid offspring of two allopatric chromosome races (Brazilian Aotus X Colombian Aotus).
