Littermate pairs of crossbred boars were fed 40 ppm zearalenone from 14 to 18 weeks of age, and the effects on reproductive development were examined. Compared to controls, boars fed zearalenone subsequently had reduced libido scores (P greater than.05), and fewer treated animals exhibited mating behavior. Plasma concentrations of testosterone were depressed (P greater than .05) during consumption of zearalenone. Zearalenone did not significantly affect age at which sperm were first voided in the urine (P greater than .25). Body weight and testicular size were not affected by zearalenone. At 36 weeks of age, testicular weight, epididymal weight, spermatid numbers, motility of cauda epididymal sperm and testicular morphology did not differ between control boars and those that had consumed zearalenone.

Littermate pairs of crossbred boars, barrows and gilts were used to study the effects of an artificially extended photoperiod during decreasing daylength on puberty in boars and on weight gain and feed efficiency. Libido scores of the boars exposed to the extended photoperiod were higher (P < .01) than those of controls at 24 and 26 weeks of age. At 26 weeks of age, semen had been collected from 74% of the boars on supplemental light but from only 26% of the controls. Lighting treatment did not affect semen quality. The number of ejaculates previously collected did affect semen quality. Motility and total sperm per ejaculate increased with increasing ejaculate number, while the percentage of abnormalities appeared to decrease. A second group of boars was delayed in the development of mating behavior, perhaps because of inadvertent consumption of Gibberella zeae-infected corn. The extended photoperiod did not exert a beneficial effect on weight gain or feed efficiency of boars, barrows or gilts.

The effects of the inhibitor of the tyrosine-hydroxylase H 44/68 and the inhibitor of the dopamine-beta-hydroxylase FLA 63 on the diurnal variations of the motor activity was studied in male Wistar rats, which were kept under standardized conditions of light and darkness (L:D = 12:12 h). The motor activity was continuously registered in groups of 5 rats using a two-channel Animex motimeter. During light FLA 63 (40 mg/kg, s.c.) greatly increased motor activity on acute application and during darkness the physiological elevation in motor activity was further but slightly increased. H 44/68 (200 mg/kg, i.p.) also increased motor activity during light, but in contrast to FLA 63 greatly reduced motor activity during darkness. The results indicate that though dopamine and noradrenaline are involved in the regulation of behavioural components, one or the other catecholamine may play a predominant role at different times of the day. Thus, it seems worthwhile to study the effects of drugs separately during light and during darkness.
Under controlled conditions of environmental light and darkness of 12:12 h the turnover of dopamine and noradrenaline in brain of male Wistar rats was studied at different times of the day. The turnover was calculated from the decline of the amine concentrations either after inhibition of the tyrosine-hydroxylase with H 44/68 (200 mg/kg, i.p.) or after inhibition of the dopamine-beta-hydroxylase with FLA 63 (40 mg/kg s.c.). Whereas the noradrenaline turnover showed only slight but not significant variations within 24 h, the turnover of the central dopamine exhibited significant variations with increased turnover rates in the second half of the light and first half of the dark period. Thus, diurnal variations have to be taken into account when studying the effects of drugs on the turnover of biogenic amines in the central nervous system.
Gastric emptying has been studied in patients operated upon for duodenal ulcer by either 1) parietal cell vagotomy without or 2) with pyloroplasty, 3) truncal vagotomy combined with pyloroplasty or 4) antral resection, 5) gastric resection a.m. Billroth I or 6) Billroth II. Isotonic saline and 10% glucose solution have been used as test meals. Volumes of meal remaining 10 and 30 minutes after the instillations of the saline and the glucose meal respectively have been estimated. After parietal cell vagotomy without pylorplasty (PCV) the gastric emptying rate of 10% glucose solution was significantly faster than in unoperated duodenal ulcer patients. After all the other surgical procedures the gastric emptying rate of saline as well as of glucose solution was in turns significantly faster than after PCV. These results indicate the importance of the antrum-pyloric region for the control of gastric emptying rate of isotonic saline and hyperosmolar glucose solution.
Our objective was to study the gastric motility after highly selective vagotomy (HSV) by determining the gastric emptying rates of isotonic saline and glucose. In 15 controls and 15 patients after HSV, 750 ml of saline and glucose respectively were introduced into the stomach with an interval of two hours. Twenty minutes after each infusion had been started the content of the stomach were aspirated. Phenol red was added as a marker in order to obtain information about the amount of gastric secretion plus possible duodenal regurgitation. In the controls the mean volume of gastric contents recovered was 208 ml after saline and 539 ml after glucose. The corresponding mean volume of test meal remaining was 158 ml after saline and 465 ml after glucose. In patients after HSV the figures for gastric contents were 81 ml after saline and 303 ml after glucose and for meals remaining 59 ml after saline and 259 ml after glucose. The data indicate that HSV speeds the gastric emptying of liquids, while liquids of different compositons are still emptied at different rates, indicating the preservation of a control of the gastric emptying.

Mutants of bacteriophage T4 have been isolated that show phenotypes seen previously with those rII deletions that extend into the nearby D2a region. Analysis indicates that rII mutations are not necessary in order to get the D2a phenotypes.
