Out of 13 patients with congenital muscular dystrophy myoglobinemia was proven in four, and nine of 13 cases of Duchenne dystrophy showed myoglobinemia by counterimmunoelectrophoretic technique. Serum myoglobin was positive in 14 out of 15 patients whose serum creatinine phosphokinase (CPK) levels rose above 2500 units, whereas positive myoglobinemia was obtained in only one patient in eleven with lower CPK levels. All the myoglobinemic patients were less than 5 years of age in the case of congenital muscular dystrophy and less than 9 years of age in the case of Duchenne dystrophy. Thus, the leakage of myoglobin into the serum from the damaged muscle seemed closely correlated to the age of the patients and level of serum CPK, but not to the type of disease.
Dynamic osmotic fragility of erythrocytes in cord blood and its changes during the neonatal period were studied by means of a coil planet centrifuge system. The starting-point for hemolysis in the newborn become similar to that of adult blood after approximately a week, while the shift of the end-point to the adult range required one month or more. The percentage of fragile cord blood cells with a hemolysis starting-point above 110 m osmol and the maximum bilirubin level during neonatal period were examined. A high percentage of fragile cells was associated with high bilirubin levels, and when fragile cells comprised more than 7.0% of the total cord blood erythrocytes, the bilirubin level tended to rise above 15 mg/dl.
A 10-year-old girl, one of three affected sisters, with non-ketotic hyperglycinaemia is described. In contrast to other reported cases, the course of the disorder was comparatively mild in this family. The only clinical signs were mental retardation and abnormalities in the EEG; blood glycine levels were 2-3 times normal. In the propositus, the formation of 14CO2 from glycine-1-14C and of FH414CH2OH from glycine-2-14C were impaired, shown by the decreased 14CO2 content of expired air and diminished labelling of carbon 3 of serine. However, the biochemical defect was no less than that seen in patients with much more severe clinical effects.

The chemical composition of deoxyribonucleoproteins from herring sperm nuclei was analyzed and the results are summarized as follows: 1. Chemical analysis of nuclear proteins and nucleic acids revealed that arginine/P molar ratio in herring sperm nuclei is unity but the ratio of arginine residues in protamine to phosphorus in the total DNA is 0.86. 2. The deoxyribonucleoproteins were isolated and their composition showed that about 14% of the total DNA in herring sperm nuclei is free from protamine and is bound with nonprotamine proteins in the weight ratio of nonprotamine proteins to DNA of 0.25-0.30. The remaining 86% of the total DNA is combined mainly with protamine and a small amount of nonprotamine proteins; the weight ratios of protamine and nonprotamine proteins to DNA are 0.75 and 0.08, respectively. In the latter complex, the molar ratio of arginine residues in protamine to phosphorus in DNA is unity.
The interaction of DNA and oligo-L-arginines having definite chain lengths of 1-17 residues was studied by precipitate formation and thermal denaturation of the complexes in order to obtain a better understanding of the roles of nuclear basic proteins. The results can be summarized as follows. 1. Those oligo-L-arginines, (Arg)n, in which n greater than or larger than 4 can bind with DNA irreversibly to form precipitates of the complexes. Among them, oligomers larger than (Arg)5 precipitate DNA completely in Arg/P input ratios below 1. The Arg/P ratios in the precipitates are between 0.6-0.8. 2. The thermal stability of the complexes depends on the method of complex formation, and complexes formed by the dialysis method are more stable than those formed by the mixing method. 3. The binding of (Arg)n to DNA was found to be reversible and in a equilibrium for n less than or equal to 6. In general, the longer the oligomer, the higher the stability of the complex at a definite Arg/P ratio. 4. For (Arg)7-10, three kinds of complexes with different stabilities are formed between DNA and oligopeptides. 5. For (Arg)14-17, only a restricted type of complexes can be formed between DNA and oligomers, as in the case with poly-L-arginine or protamines. 6. The interaction between basic nuclear proteins and DNA is discussed in the light of the basic region in protamine and histone molecules.
The effects of various treatments on the immune response of chickens to vaccine prepared from Pasteurella multocida strain P1059 were investigated. The treatments, given on or before the day of hatching, consisted of surgical bursectomy (SB), hormonal bursectomy (HB), surgical thymectomy (ST) and X-irradiation (X). In chickens subjected to SB, SBX or HB before vaccination, the production of agglutinin and immunoglobulin was impaired, but the production of resistance against challenge was not. In chickens subjected to ST or STX before vaccination, the production of agglutinin and immunoglobulin was unimpaired, but the production of resistance against challenge was diminished. Protection was therefore thymus-dependent.

A sensitive and specific radioimmunoassay method for urinary kinins was developed, which uses antiserum against synthetic bradykinin in combination with labeled tyr8-bradykinin. The assay detects as little as 6 pg per tube of bradykinin. The dose-response curves of bradykinin. lysyl-bradykinin (kallidin), and methionyl-lysyl-bradykinin were almost identical. This suggests that the values estimated with bradykinin as the standard exhibit the total urinary kinins which contain these three peptides. The assay was performed without extraction of urinary samples, since a chromatographic study demonstrated that no interfering substances in urine samples remain in our assay system. The urinary levels of total kinins in 10 normal male subjects, three male patients with chronic renal failure, and 12 male patients with essential hypertension was 37.9 +/- 3.9 microgram/day (mean +/- S.E.M.), 9.0 +/- 5.1 microgram/day, and 24.2 +/- 5.2 microgram/day, respectively.
