Staff management. Soft solutions.

The projected spend on NHS agency staff for 2005-06 is around pounds sterling 1bn. Some trusts spend significantly more than 10 per cent of their total pay bill on non-NHS staff. NHS Employers points to huge potential savings from e-rostering. The software dramatically cuts time spent preparing rotas and also produces useful management information.

Skills development. Trust in talent.

Skills gaps are being identified so staff can be equipped to deliver the services that are needed. National framework competencies provide consistency and make it easier to match roles with candidates. Career frameworks will set out pathways so people know what qualifications are needed for specific roles.

The inclusion zone.

According to the Royal College of Nursing a large number of PCTs are failing to involve staff other than GPs and managers in leadership. Anecdotal evidence suggests visible leaders encourage other nurses to become more involved. There are fears that progress will be undone as PCTs give up their provider functions and nurses become employed by individual GPs.
