Tuning the magnetic behavior via dehydration/hydration treatment of a new ferrimagnet with the composition of K0.2Mn1.4Cr(CN)6 x 6H2O.

A new complex (1) of Prussian blue analogue with the composition of K0.2Mn1.4Cr(CN)6 x 6H2O was prepared and characterized structurally as well as magnetically. The crystal structure of complex 1 was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The results indicate that complex 1 consists of a 3D cubic lattice similar to those of Mn3[Cr(CN)6]2 x xH2O, Mn3[Co(CN)6]2 x xH2O, Cd3[Cr(CN)6]2 x xH2O, and Cd3[Co(CN)6]2 x xH2O. Magnetic measurements show that complex 1 is a ferrimagnet with T(c) = 66 K. It is interesting to note that the magnetic behavior of complex 1 can be substantially modulated through a dehydration/rehydration treatment. The T(c) value of this ferrimagnet increases to 99 K after dehydration reaching a 23.4% weight loss, and it decreases back to 66 K after the dehydrated sample reabsorbs water molecules.

Solvent-tuned azido-bridged Co2+ layers: square, honeycomb, and Kagomé.

Three azido-bridged Co2+ complexes with square, honeycomb, and Kagomé layered structures were synthesized and structurally characterized. Crystallization solvents are found to be critical in generating the observed topologies. These structurally related complexes are of significance in studying two-dimensional antiferromagnetism and geometric frustration.

Inhibition of the expression of lysyl oxidase and its substrates in cadmium-resistant rat fetal lung fibroblasts.

Copper (Cu)-dependent lysyl oxidase (LO) catalyzes crosslinking of collagen and elastin stabilizing the extracellular matrix (ECM). Chronic inhalation of cadmium (Cd), a toxic metal, induces emphysema. To probe mechanisms of Cd injury to the lung, we developed Cd-resistant (CdR) cells from rat fetal lung fibroblasts (RFL6) by chronic exposure to CdCl(2) from 1 to 40 microM and further examined their expressions of LO, LO substrates, and Cu-scavenging thiols. Levels of cellular thiols, metallothionein, and glutathione in CdR cells were elevated to 13.0- and 3.2-fold of parental controls, respectively, whereas LO mRNA and protein levels were markedly reduced in these cells, with catalytic activity declining to only 16% of the parental control. A conspicuous 52 kDa species rather then the normal 50 kDa proenzyme appeared in the CdR cell extract but not in the conditioned medium, which was codistributed with the endoplasmic reticulum marker [DiOC5(3)] within the cell, implying the Cd-induced 52 kDa species as a product of an abnormal LO-processing defect in secretion. Addition of Cu into CdR cell cultures enhanced the expression of LO mRNA, protein and catalytic activities reflecting limitation of Cu bioavailability for LO in these cells. With inhibition of LO, CdR cells also displayed downregulation of collagen and elastin, substrates of LO. Restoration of collagen synthesis by exposure of CdR cells to purified LO or Cu suggests that inhibition of LO and limitation of Cu cofactor by Cd, as key phenotype changes, accelerated collagen and elastin damage, a critical event pertinent to emphysema pathogenesis.

A deformable image registration method to handle distended rectums in prostate cancer radiotherapy.

In image-guided adaptive radiotherapy, it is important to have the capability to automatically and accurately delineate the rectal wall, which is a major dose-limiting organ in prostate cancer radiotherapy. As image registration is a process to find the spatial correspondence between two images, a major challenge in intensity-based deformable image registration is to deal with the situation where no correspondence exists for some objects between the two images to be registered. One example is the variation of rectal contents due to the presence and absence of bowel gas. The intensity-based deformable image registration methods alone cannot create the correct spatial transformation if there is no correspondence between the source and target images. In this study we implemented an automatic image intensity modification procedure to create artificial gas pockets in the planning computed tomography (CT) images. A diffusion-based deformable image registration algorithm was developed to use an adaptive smoothing algorithm to better handle large organ deformations. The process was tested in 15 prostate cancer cases and 30 daily CT images containing the largest distended rectums. The manually delineated rectums agreed well with the autodelineated rectums when using the image-intensity modification procedure.

[Prevalence of LEE and HPI pathogenicity islands of Escherichia coli isolates from weaned piglets in China].

To investigate the distribution of LEE pathogenicity island and HPI of Yersinia entercolitica in Escherichia coli isolates from weaned piglets, PCR based on intimin gene (eaeA) of LEE pathogenicity island and high molecular weight protein 2 (HMWP1) gene (irp2) of HPI was developed. A total of 240 isolates from 140 diarrheic, 76 edematous and 24 edematous/diarrheic weaned piglets from different farms were tested for the presence of the two genes. Sequence analysis of randomly selected PCR products showed that eaeA gene of 5 isolates was 100%, irp2 gene of 7 isolates was 98.2%, fyuA gene of 5 isolates was 98.3% and Asn-tRNA-intB of 5 isolates was 95.8% identical to the published sequences. Isolates with LEE + HPI gene were more frequently detected in diarrheic swine than in edematous swine and edematous/diarrheic swine, and isolates with LEE gene were more frequently detected in edematous/diarrheic piglets than in edematous and diarrheic piglets. Furthermore, isolates with LEE or HPI or LEE + HPI were more frequently detected in diarrheic swine. 72.5% of HPI + isolates were fyuA positive and linked to asn-tRNA.

Syntheses, crystal structures, and spectroscopic and magnetic properties of [Mn2III(H2L1)(Cl4Cat)4.2H2O] and [Mn2III(H2L2)(Cl4Cat)4.2CH3CN.2H2O]infinity: temperature-dependent valence tautomerism in solution.

The synthesis, X-ray data, and electronic structures of two manganese(III) 1D polymers ligated by tetrachlorocatechol, [Mn(2)(III)(H(2)L(1))(Cl(4)Cat)(4).2H(2)O](infinity) (1) and [Mn(2)(III)(H(2)L(2))(Cl(4)Cat)(4).2CH(3)CN.2H(2)O](infinity) (2), are reported. The electronic structures of the complexes have been determined by UV-vis-near-IR, IR, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Both 1 and 2 are air stable in the solid state and in solution, unlike most of the previously reported o-quinone-chelated transition-metal complexes. Electronic spectroscopy exhibits a strong near-IR band near 1900 nm for both, suggesting the presence of a mixed-valence semiquinone-catecholate oxidation state of the catechol ligands, Mn(2)(III)(Cl(4)Cat)(2)(Cl(4)SQ)(2), together with the pure catecholate forms. The presence of this isomer was further supported by EPR and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The complexes undergo intramolecular electron transfer (valence tautomerism) upon an increase of the temperature involving the equilibrium Mn(2)(III)(Cl(4)Cat)(2)(Cl(4)SQ)(2) <==> Mn(2)(II)(Cl(4)SQ)(4). This phenomenon is reversible and is studied in solution using UV-vis-near-IR spectroscopy.

Prevalence of fimbial colonization factors F18ab and F18ac in Escherichia coli isolates from weaned piglets with edema and/or diarrhea in China.

F18ab and F18ac are important fimbrial colonization factors of verotoxigenic Escherichia coli (VTEC) and/or enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) in weaned piglets with edema disease and/or diarrhea. To further investigate their prevalence and correlation to pathogenic E. coli, a duplex PCR, using three primers derived from the nucleotide sequence of the F18 major fimbrial subunit gene (fedA), and a direct agglutination test, using a monoclonal antibody specific for the antigenic factor 'a' of F18, were performed. Among 60VTEC, 24VTEC/ETEC and 24 ETEC isolates tested from weaned piglets with edema disease and/or diarrhea in different pig farms in the Jiangsu Province of China, 52 isolates (48.15%) were positive in the direct agglutination test and 63 isolates (58.33%) were positive in the duplex PCR. Among 63 PCR-positive isolates, 53 isolates (49.07%) were F18ab-positive and 10 isolates (9.26%) were F18ac-positive. In addition, the F18ab gene was more frequently detected in VTEC (61.67%) or VTEC/ETEC (62.50%) than in ETEC (4.17% only), while the F18ac gene was more frequently detected in VTEC/ETEC (33.33%) than in ETEC (8.33%) or VTEC (0%). Furthermore, F18ab was more frequently associated with Shiga toxin 2e (Stx2e), whereas F18ac was more frequently associated with enterotoxin ST I. These results suggest that the duplex PCR performed in this experiment is a more reliable method for identification of F18+E. coli, and that F18 is a more important virulence factor of VTEC and VTEC/ETEC.

Heterometallic MIIRuIII2 compounds constructed from trans-[Ru(Salen)(CN)2]- and trans-[Ru(Acac)2(CN)2]-. Synthesis, structures, magnetic properties, and density functional theoretical study.

The synthesis, structures, and magnetic properties of four cyano-bridged M(II)Ru(III)2 compounds prepared from the paramagnetic Ru(III) building blocks, trans-[Ru(salen)(CN)2]- 1 [H2salen = N,N'-ethylenebis(salicylideneimine)] and trans-[Ru(acac)2(CN)2]- (Hacac = acetylacetone), are described. Compound 2, {Mn(CH3OH)4[Ru(salen)(CN)2]2}.6CH3OH.2H2O, is a trinuclear complex that exhibits antiferromagnetic coupling between Mn(II) and Ru(III) centers. Compound 3, {Mn(H2O)2[Ru(salen)(CN)2]2.H2O}n, has a 2-D sheetlike structure that exhibits antiferromagnetic coupling between Mn and Ru, leading to ferrimagnetic-like behavior. Compound 4, {Ni(cyclam)[Ru(acac)2(CN)2]2}.2CH3OH.2H2O (cyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane), is a trinuclear complex that exhibits ferromagnetic coupling. Compound 5, {Co[Ru(acac)2(CN)2]2}n, has a 3-D diamond-like interpenetrating network that exhibits ferromagnetic ordering below 4.6 K. The density functional theory (DFT) method was used to calculate the molecular magnetic orbitals and the magnetic exchange interaction between Ru(III) and M(II) (Mn(II), Ni(II)) ions.

Rational synthesis and magnetic properties of a family of low-dimensional heterometallic Cr-Mn complexes based on the versatile building block [Cr(2,2'-bipyridine)(CN)4]-.

Six heterometallic compounds based on the building block [Cr(bpy)(CN)4]- (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) with secondary and/or tertiary coligands as modulators, {Mn(H2O)2[Cr(bpy)(CN)4]2}n (1), {Mn(bpy)(H2O)[Cr(bpy)(CN)4]2 x H2O}n (2), [Mn(bpy)2][Cr(bpy)(CN)4]2 x 5H2O (3), {[Mn(dca)(bpy)(H2O)][Cr(bpy)(CN)4] x H2O}n (4) (dca = N(CN)2(-)), {Mn(N3)(CH3OH)[Cr(bpy)(CN)4] x 2H2O}n (5), and {Mn(bpy)(N3)(H2O)[Cr(bpy)(CN)4] x H2O}2 (6), have been prepared and characterized structurally and magnetically. X-ray crystallography reveals that the compounds 1, 2, 4, and 5 consist of one-dimensional (1D) chains with different structures: a 4,2-ribbon-like chain, a branched zigzag chain, a 2,2-CC zigzag chain, and a 3,3-ladder-like chain, respectively. It also reveals that compound 3 has a trinuclear [MnCr2] structure, and compound 6 has a tetranuclear [Mn2Cr2] square structure. Magnetic studies show antiferromagnetic interaction between Cr(III) and Mn(II) ions in all compounds. All of the chain compounds exhibit metamagnetic behaviors with different critical temperatures (Tc) and critical fields (Hc; at 1.8 K): 3.2 K and 3.0 kOe for 1; 2.3 K and 4.0 kOe for 2; 2.1 K and 1.0 kOe for 4; and 4.7 K and 5.0 kOe for 5, respectively. The noncentrosymmetric compound 2 is also a weak ferromagnet at low temperature because of spin canting. The magnetic analyses reveal Cr-Mn intermetallic magnetic exchange constants, J, of -4.7 to -9.4 cm(-1) (H = -JS(Cr) x S(Mn)). It is observed that the antiferromagnetic interaction through the Mn-N-C-Cr bridge increases as the Mn-N-C angle (theta) decreases to the range of 155-180 degrees, obeying an empirical relationship: J = -40 + 0.2theta. This result suggests that the best overlap between t(2g) (high-spin Mn(II)) and t(2g) (low-spin Cr(III)) occurs at an angle of approximately 155 degrees.

Syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties of mixed-valent diruthenium(II,III) diphosphonates with discrete and one-dimensional structures.

Four mixed-valent ruthenium diphosphonates, namely, Na(4)[Ru(2)(hedp)(2)X]x16H(2)O [X = Cl (1), Br (2)], K(3)[Ru(2)(hedp)(2)(H(2)O)(2)]x6H(2)O (3), and Na(7)[Ru(2)(hedp)(2)Fe(CN)(6)]x24H(2)O (4), where hedp represents 1-hydroxyethylidenediphosphonate [CH(3)C(OH)(PO(3))(2)](4-), were synthesized and structurally characterized. Compounds 1, 2, and 4 show linear chain structures in which the mixed-valent [Ru(2)(hedp)(2)](3-) dimers are linked by X(-) or [Fe(CN)(6)](4-) bridges. Compound 3 contains discrete species of [Ru(2)(hedp)(2)(H(2)O)(2)](3-) where the axial positions of [Ru(2)(hedp)(2)](3-) paddlewheel are terminated by water molecules. Magnetic studies show that significant antiferromagnetic exchanges are mediated between the [Ru(2)(hedp)(2)](3-) (S = 3/2) units through halide bridges in compounds 1 and 2.

Transcriptional and posttranscriptional inhibition of lysyl oxidase expression by cigarette smoke condensate in cultured rat fetal lung fibroblasts.

Lysyl oxidase (LO) catalyzes crosslinking of collagen and elastin essential for maintaining the structural integrity of the lung extracellular matrix (ECM). To understand mechanisms of cigarette smoke (CS)-induced emphysema, we investigated effects of cigarette smoke condensate (CSC), the particulate matter of CS, on LO mRNA expression in cultured rat fetal lung fibroblasts (RFL6). Exposure of RFL6 cells to 0-120 microg CSC/ml for 24 h induced a dose-dependent inhibition of LO steady-state mRNAs, for example, reducing transcript levels to below 10% of the control in cells incubated with 80-120 microg CSC/ml. Nuclear run-on assays indicated a marked reduction in LO relative transcriptional rates amounting to 27.7% of the control in cells treated with 120 microg CSC/ml. The actinomycin D-chase assay showed that CSC enhanced the instability of LO transcripts. The t1/2 for LO mRNA decay was decreased from 24 h in the control to 4.5 h in cells treated with 120 microg CSC/ml. Moreover, 80-120 microg CSC/ml also inhibited LO promoter activity as revealed by suppression of reporter gene expression in cells transfected with LO promoter-luciferase vectors. Thus, inhibition of LO transcription initiation and enhancement of LO mRNA instability both contributed to downregulation of LO steady-state mRNA in CSC-treated cells. Note that inhibition of LO mRNA expression by CSC was closely accompanied by markedly decreased levels of transcripts of collagen type I and tropoelastin, two substrates of LO. Thus, transcriptional perturbation of LO and its substrates may be a critical mechanism for ECM damage in CS-induced emphysema.

Field-induced magnetic transitions in metal phosphonates with ladderlike chain structures: (NH3C6H4NH3)M2(hedpH)2.H2O [M = Fe, Co, Mn, Zn; hedp = C(CH3)(OH)(PO3)2].

This paper reports the syntheses and characterization of four isomorphous compounds (NH(3)C(6)H(4)NH(3))M(2)(hedpH)(2).H(2)O [M = Fe (1), Co (2), Mn (3), Zn (4); hedp = C(CH(3))(OH)(PO(3))(2)]. Each contains two crystallographically different kinds of {M(2)(hedpH)(2)}(n) double chains, where the {M(2)(mu-O)(2)} dimer units are connected by O-P-O bridges. The double chains are connected through extensive hydrogen bonds, hence generating a three-dimensional supramolecular network. The temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements show dominant antiferromagnetic interactions in compounds 1-3, mediated through the mu-O and/or O-P-O bridges between the metal(II) centers. The magnetization measurements reveal that compounds 1-3 experience field-induced magnetic transitions at low temperatures.
