Experimental demonstration of self-collimation inside a three-dimensional photonic crystal.

We present our experimental demonstration of self-collimation inside a three-dimensional (3D) simple cubic photonic crystal at microwave frequencies. The photonic crystal was designed with unique dispersion property and fabricated by a high precision computer-controlled machine. The self-collimation modes were excited by a grounded waveguide feeding and detected by a scanning monopole. Self-collimation of electromagnetic waves in the 3D photonic crystal was demonstrated by measuring the 3D field distribution, which was shown as a narrow collimated beam inside the 3D photonic crystal but a diverged beam in the absence of the photonic crystal.

Three-dimensional subwavelength imaging by a photonic-crystal flat lens using negative refraction at microwave frequencies.

We experimentally demonstrate subwavelength resolution imaging at microwave frequencies by a three-dimensional (3D) photonic-crystal flat lens using full 3D negative refraction. The photonic crystal was fabricated in a layer-by-layer process. A subwavelength pinhole source and a dipole detector were employed for the measurement. By point-by-point scanning, we obtained the image of the pinhole source shown in both amplitude and phase, which demonstrated the imaging mechanism and subwavelength feature size in all three dimensions. An image of two pinhole sources with subwavelength spacing showed two resolved spots, which further verified subwavelength resolution.

Dispersion-based beam splitter in photonic crystals.

A novel implementation of a dispersion-based beam splitter in a photonic crystal (PhC) is proposed. The beam splitter consists of two periodic structures: a nonchannel dispersion-guiding region and a splitting structure operating inside the photonic bandgap. The dispersion-guiding PhC structure is used to route the optical wave by exploiting the dispersion properties of the lattice. An arbitrary power ratio between the output beams can be achieved by varying the parameters of the splitting structure. Within the studied range of splitting structures, high output power was observed and verified experimentally.

Dispersion-based optical routing in photonic crystals.

We present and experimentally validate self-collimation in planar photonic crystals as a new means of achieving structureless confinement of light in optical devices. We demonstrate the ability to arbitrarily route light by exploiting the dispersive characteristics of the photonic crystal. Propagation loss as low as 2.17 dB/mm is observed, and proposed applications of these devices are presented.

Applying a mapped pseudospectral time-domain method in simulating diffractive optical elements.

A new technique for the analysis of two-dimensional diffractive optical elements, by use of the pseudospectral time-domain (PSTD) method, is presented. In particular, the method uses a nonuniform (NU) grid and a mapping technique to obtain very accurate spatial derivatives in an efficient manner. To this end, we present the formulation of the PSTD method by using a NU grid and compare its application to the analysis with that of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Using only a fraction of the memory and a fraction of the computation time used by FDTD, the mapped PSTD was able to obtain very close results to FDTD.

Plane-wave expansion method for calculating band structure of photonic crystal slabs with perfectly matched layers.

We present a new algorithm for calculation of the band structure of photonic crystal slabs. This algorithm combines the plane-wave expansion method with perfectly matched layers for the termination of the computational region in the direction out of the plane. In addition, the effective-medium tensor is applied to improve convergence. A general complex eigenvalue problem is then obtained. Two criteria are presented to distinguish the guided modes from the PML modes. As such, this scheme can accurately determine the band structure both above and below the light cone. The convergence of the algorithm presented has been studied. The results obtained by using this algorithm have been compared with those obtained by the finite-difference time-domain method and found to agree very well.

Heterostructure photonic crystals: theory and applications.

A hybrid structure combining square and hexagonal photonic crystal lattices is presented. This structure, which we refer to as heterostructure, offers the ability to tailor, optimize, and match the band structure of different lattices. The availability of heterostructures in photonic crystals opens abroad range of possibilities for optical device development. In particular, heterostructure photonic crystals are well suited for the application of optical beam splitting (Y coupler) and combining. Numerical experiments performed by use of the finite-difference time-domain method are shown to illustrate the device implemented in both unistructure and heterostructure lattices.

Tunable photonic crystal microcavities.

We present a method for tuning a photonic crystal microcavity by modulating the index of refraction of the lattice sites within and surrounding the microcavity. The index of refraction can be actively modulated after infiltrating anisotropic liquid crystals into a two-dimensional photonic crystal lattice of air cylinders in silicon. We analyze the Q-factors and resonance frequencies of a tunable photonic crystal microcavity by considering various methods of index modulation. These tunable cavities are incorporated in a channel drop filter to demonstrate their enhancement of wavelength division multiplexing photonic crystal applications.
