Combination of hiatal hernia (HH) and esophageal cancer should not be regarded as a mere coincidence. Radio-endoscopic and morphological evidence was evaluated on 481 HH cases treated at the University Oncological Clinic in 1999-2004. The analysis identified 41 esophageal cancer patients with oncological record.

Blood rheology was examined in 163 patients with gastric cancer. The 4th stage of the disease was detected in 51 of them. The following changes of blood rheology were found: changes of a blood and plasma viscosity and red blood cells hyperaggregation. These changes lead to hypo- and dysproteinaemia, erythron system disorders, endogenous intoxication, hemostasis disorders which correlated in severity with the disease stage. These patients need correction of rheological disorders.

The article treats of the problem of diagnosis of hiatal hernias. The authors have summarized the results of instrumental examination of 300 patients with hiatal hernias. Diagnostic potential is assessed of a variety of examination techniques (roentgenology, endoscopy, pH-metry, manometry) in pathology of cardia. New method of roentgenologic diagnosis of hiatal hernias is described.

The paper describes the data obtained by Soviet and American physicians who took part in the treatment of patients burnt in the Bashkiria accident (an outburst of petroleum products). It was established that in deep burns bioelectrostimulation combined with early necrectomy and autodermoplasty yielded the best therapeutic results.

The experience with surgical treatment of 112 patients with gastric and duodenal ulcer disease associated with pathology of the abdominal organs is summarized. Most frequently in ulcer disease, sliding hiatal hernia (34.1% of cases) and adhesive disease (25.7%) were revealed. In all the patients, the simultaneous operations were performed. The incidence of postoperative complications was 13% and didn't exceed that in the control group of patients, who underwent only the operations on the stomach and duodenum.

In examination of 100 patients after operations on the abdominal organs, a high incidence of disorders in function of the esophagogastric junction was noted. Their timely diagnosis and rational correction are the urgent problem in the abdominal surgery.
The article generalizes experience in the treatment of concurrent diseases of the abdominal organs in 567 patients; 1,214 operations were performed. Concurrent gynecological diseases are encountered most frequently during emergency surgery, affections of the stomach, bile ducts, and postoperative ventral hernias--in planned operations. On the basis of study of the clinical material and the results of operations it was established that concurrent operations should be performed in specialized departments in a planned order.
