Although invasive plant species often have a hybrid ancestry, unambiguous evidence that hybridization has stimulated the evolution of invasive behaviors has been difficult to come by. Here, we briefly review how hybridization might contribute to the colonization of novel habitats, range expansions, and invasiveness and then describe work on hybrid sunflowers that forges a direct link between hybridization and ecological divergence. We first discuss the invasion of Texas by the common sunflower and show that the introgression of chromosomal segments from a locally adapted species may have facilitated range expansion. We then present evidence that the colonization of sand dune, desert floor, and salt marsh habitats by three hybrid sunflower species was made possible by selection on extreme or "transgressive" phenotypes generated by hybridization. This body of work corroborates earlier claims regarding the role of hybridization in adaptive evolution and provides an experimental and conceptual framework for ongoing studies in this area.
Tuberculosis subunit vaccines codelivered with interleukin-12 (IL-12)-encapsulated microspheres (IL-12EM) are designed for a sustained release of IL-12 and could induce strong Th1 immune responses specific to Ag85A and ESAT-6. The adjuvant combination of IL-12EM plus AS01B was a more efficient way to induce a sustained Th1 immunity and protection against Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Driver fatigue has been the cause of traffic accidents. Despite this, the amount of time that drivers spend within cars has been increasing due to complex city life, traffic congestion, and particular occupational requirements. Consequently, fatigue and stress cannot be avoided. In present study, in order to find out the possibility for reducing fatigue while driving due to the supply of oxygen, driver fatigue resulting from the passage of time when different oxygen concentrations are supplied has been examined through subjective evaluations and reaction times using driving simulator for 10 male subjects. The results revealed the subjective fatigue feeling was highest in the low rate (18%) oxygen condition, while in the high rate (30%), it decreased to a certain extent. The feeling of sleepiness also showed the tendency to decrease somewhat in the case of the driving time having passed over 1h in the high-rate conditions. Also, the reaction time for braking after being instructed to suddenly stop following more than 2h of driving was reduced in the high-rate oxygen conditions compared to the low-rate oxygen condition. From the above results, it was shown that while driving a car, if the oxygen rate is lowered, fatigue is felt severely, and that in the case of supplying a high-rate of oxygen, the feeling of fatigue is lowered to some extent and the reaction time is shortened. It was suggested that the driver's fatigue can be reduced according to the supply of oxygen.
The effect of a new rhFSH, PG-0801, on oocyte quality, ovulation and in vitro fertilization (IVF) was examined in androgen-sterilized mice. Experimental sterility was induced by a single subcutaneous injection of testosterone propionate (TP, 1 mg/head) into 5 day old female mice. Ovulation was generated in the 10 to 13-week old TP-injected mice by a subcutaneous rhFSH injection (1, 5 or 10 IU/head) followed 48 hours later by a second rhFSH injection (1, 5 or 10 IU/head). For comparison, a subcutaneous PMSG (5 IU/head) injection was used for folliculogenesis and a hCG (5 IU/head) injection was used for ovulation. These were administered using the same protocol. The eggs were harvested from the oviducts and counted 17 to 20 hours after the second injection. IVF was performed by adding sperms (2 x 10(5)/ml to 2 x 106/ ml) to determine the functional activity of the eggs, and the fertilization rate was measured. In addition, the pregnancy rate and fetal development were examined after 15-17 days of gestation. The number of oocytes recovered from the rhFSH/rhFSH group increased dose-dependently and was slightly higher than that of the PMSG/hCG group. The pregnancy rates of the group receiving 1, 5, and 10 IU of rhFSH/rhFSH were 50%, 66.7%, and 75%, respectively, which were significantly higher than that of the control (untreated) group (0%). The numbers of viable fetuses in the 1, 5, and 10 IU/head of the rhFSH/rhFSH group (8.0 +/- 1.50, 8.9 +/- 1.02, and 8.9 +/- 1.12 fetuses/dam, respectively) were comparable to that of the 5 IU/head PMSG/ hCG group (9.4 +/- 0.94). The mice receiving rhFSH/rhFSH and PMSG/hCG showed similar fertilization rates (around 65%) via the IVF procedure. These results demonstrate that a new rhFSH, PG-0801, may be useful for inducing ovulation in functionally infertile patients and for superovulation in ovulatory patients participating in assisted reproductive technology (ART) programs.
