Bond orders and atomic properties of the highly deformed halogenated fullerenes C60F18 and C60Cl30 derived from their charge densities.

The experimental charge densities of the halogenated C(60) fullerenes C(60)F(18) and C(60)Cl(30) were determined from high-resolution X-ray data sets measured with conventional Mo(Kalpha) radiation at 20 K for C(60)Cl(30) and with synchrotron radiation at 92 K for the fluorine compound. Bond topological and atomic properties were analyzed by using Bader's AIM theory. For the different C--C bonds, which vary in lengths between 1.35 and 1.70 A bond orders n between n=2 and significantly below n=1 were calculated from the bond topological properties at the bond critical points (BCP's). The low bond orders are seen for 5/6 bonds with each contributing carbon carrying a halogen atom. By integration over Bader's zero flux basins in the electron density gradient vector field atomic properties were also obtained. In contrast to free C(60), in which all carbon atoms have a uniform volume of 11 A(3) and zero charge, atomic volumes vary roughly between 5 and 10 A(3) in the halogenated compounds. Almost zero atomic charges are also found in the Cl derivative but a charge separation up to +/-0.8 e exists between C and F in C(60)F(18) due to the higher fluorine electronegativity, which is also seen in the electrostatic potential for which the electronegativity difference between carbon and fluorine, and the addition to one hemisphere of the fullerene cage leads to a strong potential gradient along the C(60)F(18) molecule. From the summation over all atomic volumes it follows that the halogen addition does not only lead to a dramatic distortion of the C(60) cage but also to a significant shrinkage of its volume.

Deviation from the planarity--a large Dy3N cluster encapsulated in an Ih-C80 cage: an X-ray crystallographic and vibrational spectroscopic study.

The high-yield synthesis of Dy3N@C80 (I) opens the possibility of characterizing its molecular and vibrational structures. We report on the structure determination of Dy3N@C80 (I) by X-ray crystallographic study of single crystal of Dy3N@C80.Ni(OEP).2C6H6, revealing a nearly planar Dy3N cluster encapsulated in an Ih-C80 cage. The vibrational structure of Dy3N@C80 (I) is studied by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy in combination with force-field calculations. A correlation was found between the antisymmetric metal-nitrogen stretching vibration and the structure of the M3N cluster of M3N@C80 (I) (M = Y, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm). Moreover, a stronger interaction between the encaged nitride cluster and the C80 carbon cage was found in the class II M3N@C80 (I) (M = Y, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm) than in Sc3N@C80 (I). This study demonstrates that the cluster size plays the dominating role in the structure of the M3N cluster in M3N@C80 (I).

Electronic structure and spectroscopic studies of D3d-C60Cl30, a chlorofullerene with a [18]trannulene ring, and its relation to other [18]trannulenes.

Detailed spectroscopic characterization of D3d-C60Cl30, including IR, Raman, UV-vis absorption, and fluorescence spectra, is presented for the first time. Assignment of the vibrational spectra is proposed on the basis of density functional theory computations. Electronic structure and excitations of C60Cl30 and other [18]trannulenes are studied theoretically with the use of time-dependent density functional theory and time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation. Assignment of the low-energy part of electronic spectra of C60-based [18]trannulenes is given and importance of the interactions between trannulene moiety and remaining pi-subsystems in these molecules is established.

The imidazole role in strontium beta-diketonate complexes formation.

A selection of new strontium beta-diketonate derivatives (imH2)2[Sr2(beta-dike)6] [where imH = imidazole and beta-dike = tfac (tfacH = 1,1,1-trifluoro-2,4-pentanedione), tfbz (tfbzH = 1,1,1-trifluoro-4-phenyl-2,4-butanedione), or hfac (hfacH = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedione)], [Sr2(tfac)4(Meim)2(H2O)2], (MeimH)2[Sr(beta-dike)4] (where Meim = 1-methylimidazole and beta-dike = tfbz or hfac), [Sr2(thd)4(imH)2(EtOH)], and [Sr2(thd)4(Meim)2(EtOH)] (where thdH = 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedione) have been synthesized and fully characterized. (imH2)2[Sr2(beta-dike)6] and (MeimH)2[Sr(beta-dike)4] are di- and mononuclear Sr anionic complexes, respectively, while [Sr2(tfac)4(Meim)2(H2O)2], [Sr2(thd)4(imH)2(EtOH)], and [Sr2(thd)4(Meim)2(EtOH)] are neutral dinuclear molecular derivatives. The derivative (imH2)2[Sr2(hfac)6] slowly decomposes in solution under aerobic conditions, giving (imH2)2[Sr(H2O)2(tfa)3](tfa) (tfaH = trifluoroacetic acid), which is an ionic compound containing polynuclear anionic chains composed of Sr(H2O)2(tfa)3 units. When a deficiency of imH is employed, the thdH proligand forms not only the dinuclear derivative [Sr2(thd)4(imH)2(EtOH)] but also an additional product with the formula [Sr(thd)2(H2O)2(EtOH)], in which the Sr atom is seven-coordinated. A complete solid-state characterization has been accomplished by comparing X-ray and solid-state 13C NMR data. Elucidation of the H-bond interaction between the heterocyclic rings and metal complexes by cross-polarization magic-angle-spinning 15N NMR is also reported.

Experimental advances for high-speed evaluation of electron densities.

Evaluating electron densities of entire classes of chemically or biologically related compounds is within reach thanks to advances in high-speed high-resolution synchrotron diffraction: a 12 h sequence of diffraction experiments has been conducted at the beamline X10SA of the Swiss Light Source (SLS). It resulted in four high-resolution X-ray data sets used for experimental electron density determinations of the two halogenated fullerenes C60F18 and C60Cl30, the Watson and Crick base pair adenine-thymine and the tripeptide L-Ala-Gly-L-Ala. Application is considered relevant for life sciences where the study of structure-guided biological recognition processes can now be completed by electronic information of entire series of molecules.

Preparation and crystallographic characterization of C60Cl24.

C60Cl24 has been synthesized by the chlorination of C60 with VCl4 or C60Br24 with SbCl5; the X-ray single crystal structure of C60Cl24.2Br2 confirmed the molecular T(h) symmetry in good agreement with the IR data and theoretical calculations.

Th-C60F24.

The regioselective fluorination of Th-C60Br24 with XeF2 in anhydrous HF at 25 degrees C produced Th-C60F24, which is isostructural with Th-C60Br24. The compound, the first example of a fluorofullerene with a noncontiguous pattern of F-bearing sp3 C atoms, was characterized by EI and ESI mass spectrometry and by 19F NMR (single resonance at delta -144 for all 24 F atoms), 13C NMR (two resonances at delta 145.9 (C=C) and delta 83.5 (C-F; JCF = 212 Hz), and FTIR spectroscopy. DFT calculations revealed that at least two other isomers of C60F24 are more stable than Th-C60F24 by >/=280 kJ mol-1, demonstrating that Th-C60F24 is a kinetically stable fluorofullerene.
