Positional order and diffusion processes in particle systems.

The relaxation of a nonequilibrium solid to a fluid is determined by observing the positional order parameter in Monte Carlo simulations, and discussed based on diffusion processes in the hard-particle systems. From the cumulant expansion up to the second order, the relation between the positional order parameter Psi and the mean square displacement is obtained to be Psi approximately exp(-K2 /2d) with a reciprocal vector K and the dimension of the system d. On the basis of this relation, the positional order should decay exponentially as Psi is approximately exp(-K2Dt) when the system involves normal diffusion with a diffusion constant D. A diffusion process with swapping positions of particles is also discussed. The swapping of particles contributes to the higher orders of the cumulants, and swapping positions allows particles to diffuse without destroying the positional order while the normal diffusion destroys it.

Efficiency of rejection-free dynamic Monte Carlo methods for homogeneous spin models, hard disk systems, and hard sphere systems.

We construct asymptotic arguments for the relative efficiency of rejection-free Monte Carlo (MC) methods compared to the standard MC method. We find that the efficiency is proportional to exp(constbeta) in the Ising, sqrt[beta] in the classical XY, and beta in the classical Heisenberg spin systems with inverse temperature beta, regardless of the dimension. The efficiency in hard particle systems is also obtained, and found to be proportional to (rho(cp)-rho)(-d) with the closest packing density rho(cp), density rho, and dimension d of the systems. We construct and implement a rejection-free Monte Carlo method for the hard-disk system. The RFMC has a greater computational efficiency at high densities, and the density dependence of the efficiency is as predicted by our arguments.

Attraction-limited cluster-cluster aggregation of Ising dipolar particles.

The attraction-limited cluster-cluster aggregation of two-dimensional Ising dipolar particles with or without particle-size dispersity is studied. The fast decrease of the number of even-sized clusters for relatively smaller clusters is observed. The threshold concentration is also determined, under which the dynamics of aggregation is explained using the well-known dynamic scaling theory of Vicsek and Family. Above the threshold concentration, the dynamics depends on particle-size dispersity. Furthermore, it is suggested that, even in the dilute limit, the dynamic exponents are affected by the screening of the surrounding clusters on collision between two clusters.

Size-dispersity effects in two-dimensional melting.

In order to investigate the effect of size dispersity on two-dimensional melting transitions, hard-disk systems with equimolar bidispersity are studied by means of particle dynamics simulations. From the nonequilibrium relaxation behaviors of bond-orientational order parameters, we find that (i) there is a critical dispersity at which the melting transition of the hexagonal solid vanishes and (ii) the quadratic structure is metastable in a certain region of the dispersity-density parameter space. These results suggest that the dispersity not only destroys order but produces new structures under certain specific conditions.

Superscaling of percolation on rectangular domains.

For percolation on (RL)xL two-dimensional rectangular domains with a width L and aspect ratio R, we propose that the existence probability of the percolating cluster E(p)(L,epsilon,R) as a function of L, R, and deviation from the critical point epsilon can be expressed as F(epsilonL(y(t))R(a)), where y(t) identical with1/nu is the thermal scaling power, a is a new exponent, and F is a scaling function. We use Monte Carlo simulation of bond percolation on square lattices to test our proposal and find that it is well satisfied with a=0.14(1) for R>2. We also propose superscaling for other critical quantities.

Critical exponents of isotropic-hexatic phase transition in the hard-disk system.

The hard-disk system is studied by observing the nonequilibrium relaxation behavior of a bond-orientational order parameter. The density dependence of characteristic relaxation time tau is estimated from the finite-time scaling analysis. The critical point between the fluid and the hexatic phase is refined to be 0.899 (1) by assuming the divergence behavior of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. The value of the critical exponent eta is also studied by analyzing the fluctuation of the order parameter at the criticality and estimated as eta=0.25 (2). These results are consistent with the prediction by the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young theory.

Nonequilibrium relaxation analysis of two-dimensional melting.

The phase diagram of a hard-disk system is studied by observing nonequilibrium relaxation functions of a bond-orientational order parameter using particle dynamics simulations. From a finite-time scaling analysis, two Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions can be observed when the density is increased from the isotropic fluid phase to closest packing. The transition densities are estimated to be 0.901(2) and 0.910(2), where the density denotes the fraction of area occupied by the particles, the density is normalized to one for the quadratic packing configuration. These observations are consistent with the predictions of the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young theory.
