Towards atomic site-selective sensitivity in tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

Depending on each nitrogen atom of adenine molecule to which a silver atom of a metallic tip approaches, tip-enhanced near-field Raman spectroscopy may show a potential to achieve atomic site-selective detection sensitivity. Molecular vibrational calculations show that silver atoms and adenine molecule create several isomers generating specific vibrational modes of each isomer that are shifted or not observable in isolated adenine molecule itself. Here, the authors observe the specific vibrational modes and spectral shifts of isomers experimentally and are in good agreement with their calculations.

Ordering of azobenzenes by two-photon isomerization.

We report on light induced orientation by two-photon isomerization of azobenzenes in films of polymer. The dynamics of isomerization and orientation by one-photon absorption and two-photon absorption (TPA) are similar, and TPA creates a degree of molecular orientation which is comparable to that achieved by single-photon isomerization, in agreement with the theoretical predictions of two-photon isomeric orientation.

Stepwise guest adsorption with large hysteresis in a coordination polymer {[Cu(bhnq)(THF)2](THF)}n constructed from a flexible hingelike ligand.

Reversible vapochromic behavior of a porous copper(II) coordination polymer {[Cu(bhnq)(THF)2](THF)}n (1; THF = tetrahydrofuran) constructed from a flexible hingelike ligand H2bhnq [2,2'-bis(3-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone)] has been investigated by adsorption measurements. The isotherms show large hysteretic and stepwise profiles, suggesting the occurrence of the guest-induced framework transformation. The dynamic coil-like behavior of 1 can be controlled through the change of the hydrogen-bonding interactions caused by the reversible and selective incorporation of guest molecules.

Nanoscale uniaxial pressure effect of a carbon nanotube bundle on tip-enhanced near-field Raman spectra.

In situ measurement of tip-enhanced near-field Raman spectra of an isolated single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) bundle has been demonstrated by applying a uniaxial pressure up to approximately 2 GPa to the bundle via a metal-coated atomic force microscope tip. We investigated the pressure dependences of Raman frequencies and the intensity of the radial breathing mode bands, the D-band and the G-band, which were related to deformation of SWNTs caused by the tip pressure.

Location-dependent photogeneration of calcium waves in HeLa cells.

The calcium ion (Ca(2+)) concentrations in a cell are responsible for the control of vital cellular functions and have been widely studied as a means to investigate and control cell activities. Here, we demonstrate Ca(2+) wave generation in HeLa cells by femtosecond laser irradiation and show unexpected properties of the Ca(2+) release and propagation. When the laser was focused in the cell cytoplasm, Ca(2+) release was independent of both external Ca(2+) influx and the phosphoinositide-phospholipase C (PLC) signaling pathway. The nucleus was not a susceptible target for laser-induced Ca(2+) release, whereas irradiation of the plasma membrane produced evidence of transient poration, through which the extracellular solution could enter the cell. By chelating extracellular Ca(2+), we found that laser-induced influx of ethylene glycol tetra-acetic acid (EGTA) can compete with calcium induced calcium release and significantly delay or suppress the onset of the Ca(2+) wave in the target cell. Intercellular Ca(2+) propagation was adenosine triphosphate-dependent and could be observed even when the target cell cytosolic Ca(2+) rise was suppressed by influx of EGTA. The irradiation effect on overall cell viability was also tested and found to be low (85% at 6 h after irradiation by 60 mW average power). Laser-induced Ca(2+) waves can be reliably generated by controlling the exposure and focal position and do not require the presence of caged Ca(2+). The technique has the potential to replace other methods of Ca(2+) stimulation, which either require additional caged molecules in the cell or do not have an interaction that is as well localized.

Subwavelength optical imaging through a metallic nanorod array.

We propose a subwavelength imaging system without a lens or a mirror but with an array of metallic nanorods. The near-field components of dipole sources were plasmonically transferred through the rod array to reproduce the source distribution in the other side. We calculated the field distribution at the different planes of imaging process using the finite-difference time-domain algorithm and found that the spatial resolution was 40 nm given by the rod size and spacing. A typical configuration is a hexagonal arrangement of silver rods of 50 nm height and 20 nm diameter. We also show that the image formation highly depends on the coherence and the polarization of the source distribution and the source-array distance.

Negative magnetic permeability in the visible light region.

Negative magnetic permeability of single split-ring resonators (SSRRs) is theoretically investigated in the visible light region. To describe the conduction characteristics of metal in the visible range, we develop the internal impedance formula completely. In our calculations, we determine the magnetic responses of the SSRR accurately. Based on our investigations, we also demonstrate the negative mu of the silver SSRR array in the visible light region.

Triple hydrogen bonds direct crystal engineering of metal-assembled complexes: the effect of a novel organic-inorganic module on supramolecular structure.

Novel triply hydrogen bonded suprastructures based on [M(tdpd)2(L)2]2- (H2tdpd=1,4,5,6-tetrahydro-5,6-dioxo-2,3-pyrazinedicarbonitrile, L=solvent) and melamine-analogous cations have been synthesized and characterized. The use of anions containing two AAA sets from [M(tdpd)2(L)2]2- together with cations containing one DDD set (A=hydrogen-bond acceptor, D=hydrogen-bond donor) leads to the formation of complementary triply hydrogen bonded modules in the solid state. In all cases, the building module is further extended via additional hydrogen-bonding interactions to produce a tape, and tapes are assembled into sheets. These results show that a hydrogen-bonded module consisting of different kinds of building blocks, one of which is a metal complex that includes hydrogen-bond acceptor sites and the other is a hydrogen-bond donor molecule, will be attractive for constructing metal-containing supramolecular systems by the self-assembly technique.

Enhancement of electroluminescence through a two-dimensional corrugated metal film by grating-induced surface-plasmon cross coupling.

We report enhancement of electroluminescence through opaque-topped metal cathodes in organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs), which are periodically corrugated in two dimensions. The enhancement is caused by grating-induced cross coupling and outcoupling of surface plasmons. The emission intensity observed at normal direction is enhanced by a factor of 4 compared with that of OLEDs with one-dimensionally corrugated metal cathodes and is higher than that observed from the transparent substrate side in uncorrugated OLEDs. We attribute the enhancement to the fact that the surface plasmons propagating in all lateral directions are coupled out into free space by the two-dimensional corrugated structure of the OLEDs. In addition, the emission from the transparent substrate side is also much enhanced owing to the efficient coupling out of the waveguide modes trapped in the emissive layer.

Methods for the characterization of deformable membrane mirrors.

We demonstrate two methods for the characterization of deformable membrane mirrors and the training of adaptive optics systems that employ these mirrors. Neither method employs a wave-front sensor. In one case, aberrations produced by a wave-front generator are corrected by the deformable mirror by use of a rapidly converging iterative algorithm based on orthogonal deformation modes of the mirror. In the other case, a simple interferometer is used with fringe analysis and phase-unwrapping algorithms. We discuss how the choice of singular values can be used to control the pseudoinversion of the control matrix.

Direct laser writing defects in holographic lithography-created photonic lattices.

As a well-established laser fabrication approach, holographic lithography, or multibeam interference patterning, is known for its capability to create long-range ordered large-volume photonic crystals (PhCs) rapidly. Its broad use is, however, hampered by difficulty in inducing artificially designed defects for device functions. We use pinpoint femtosecond laser ablation to remove and two-photon photopolymerization to add desired defective features to obtain photonic acceptors and photonic donors, respectively, in an otherwise complete PhC matrix produced by holographic lithography. The combined use of the two direct laser writing technologies would immediately make holographic lithography a promising industrial tool for PhC manufacture.

DFT vibrational calculations of rhodamine 6G adsorbed on silver: analysis of tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

The tip-enhanced near-field Raman (TERS) bands of Rhodamine 6G (R6G), that we reported earlier [Chem. Phys. Lett. 2001, 335, 369.], are assigned on the basis of density-functional theory (DFT) calculations at the 6-311++G(d,p) level. The Raman and infrared intensities as well as frequencies of the vibrational modes are used for band assignments. These vibrational modes, in combination with characterization of resonant electronic transitions using time-dependent DFT calculations, predict spectral changes in resonant Raman and surface-enhanced resonant Raman scatterings of R6G. Moreover, the TERS spectra of R6G are analyzed in detail, where interactions between the tip and R6G molecules and their enhancement mechanisms are discussed. Finally, we propose a novel Raman spectroscopy technique capable of detecting molecular vibrations at sub-nanometer scale.

Substituent effect of the coordinated pyridine in a series of pyrazolato bridged dinuclear diiron(II) complexes on the spin-crossover behavior.

Two series of pyrazolato bridged dinuclear NCS and NCBH3 diiron(II) complexes with various types of 3- or 4-substituted pyridines, [{Fe(NCS or NCBH3)(X-py)}2(mu-bpypz)2], were prepared and their variable-temperature magnetic susceptibilities were measured. There were found linear correlations of the spin-crossover temperatures Tc not only between the NCS and NCBH3 complexes with the corresponding substituted pyridines, but also between the Tc and the Hammett constants, supporting the electronic substituent effect of the coordinated pyridine rather than a steric effect. The ligand field and the interelectronic repulsion parameters together with the thermodynamic data and/or cooperativity factor were discussed in relation with their spin-crossover behavior.

Metal-complex assemblies constructed from the flexible hinge-like ligand H2bhnq: structural versatility and dynamic behavior in the solid state.

Novel metal-complex assemblies constructed from the flexible hinge-like ligand H(2)bhnq (H(2)bhnq=2,2'-bi(3-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone)) have been synthesized. The X-ray crystal structures of these compounds reveal that four types of architectures are accessible by variation of the metal ions. In copper(II) compounds 1-3, the chelating bhnq(2-) ions bridge copper(II) centers to form one-dimensional zigzag chains. The chains of 1-3 are arranged by hydrogen-bonding interactions and stacking interactions to produce porous structures. Cobalt(II) and zinc(II) compounds 4 and 5 form one-dimensional helical chains. In 4 and 5, the crystal packing induces spontaneous resolution of the helical chains with chiral cavities formed perpendicular to the helices. Nickel(II) compounds 6 and 7 form cyclic tetramers. The fourth architecture, a dimer (compound 8), is obtained by the reaction of zinc(II) and bhnq(2-) in MeOH. In these compounds, changes of the dihedral angles and the metal-coordination mode of the bhnq(2-) ion induce the structural versatility. The assemblies of the zigzag chains of the copper(II) compounds exhibit reversible vapochromic behavior. UV/Vis, powder X-ray diffraction, EPR, and adsorption isotherm measurements indicate that this vapochromic behavior is based on the hinge-like flexibility of the bhnq(2-) ion.

Tip-enhanced coherent anti-stokes Raman scattering for vibrational nanoimaging.

An electric field enhanced by a metallic nanoprobe has locally induced coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) of adenine molecules in a nanometric DNA network structure. Owing to the third-order nonlinearity, the excitation of the CARS polarization is extremely confined to the end of the tip apex, resulting in a spatial resolution far beyond the diffraction limit of light. Our tip-enhanced CARS microscope visualized the DNA network structure at a specific vibrational frequency (approximately 1337 cm(-1)) corresponding to the ring-breathing mode of diazole of adenine molecules.
