The phonological loop and memory for rhythms: an individual differences approach.

The purpose of the current study was to examine the relationship between short-term memory for rhythm and the phonological loop in working memory. Results showed that digit span scores significantly correlated with the scores on the rhythmic memory task, and that the correlation between the two scores remained significant even after the common variance with reading speed was partialled out. Partial correlation and regression analyses indicated that the relation between memory for rhythm and digit span scores is mediated by the third component in the phonological loop, the component that is responsible for regulation of timing mechanisms in immediate memory tasks.

Advanced gastric cancer associated with DIC successfully treated with 5-FU and cisplatin: a case report.

We report a case of advanced gastric cancer complicated by disseminated intravascular coagulation successfully treated with chemotherapy consisting of 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin. The patient was a 53-year-old woman who complained of loss of appetite, weight loss, and low back pain. Based on the laboratory data, a diagnosis of disseminated intravascular coagulation was made. Gastroscopy revealed gastric carcinoma (Borrmann type 3) that was continuously bleeding, and chest computed tomography showed a solitary lung metastasis and bilateral pleural effusion. Bone scintigraphy revealed multiple bone metastases. Accordingly, we made a diagnosis of stage IV gastric cancer complicated by disseminated intravascular coagulation. We selected the 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin combination chemotherapy for treatment and obtained the patient's consent. After two cycles of the 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin therapy, the bleeding symptoms improved and the disseminated intravascular coagulation process was successfully controlled. We concluded that disseminated intravascular coagulation caused by gastric cancer may be improved when the primary cancer and its metastases are brought under control by treatment with FP combination chemotherapy.

Neostigmine and polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution for the therapy of acute hepatic encephalopathy with liver cirrhosis and ascites.

We treated a 75-year-old man who had non-B and non-C, and Child's class C liver cirrhosis and acute hepatic encephalopathy with neostigmine and polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution. He received repeated transcatheter artrial embolization and percutaneous ethanol injection combination therapy for multiple hepatocellular carcinomas, which controlled his disease for 25 months from the first treatment. He was admitted in a state of hepatic coma after being found unresponsive at his home. With the consent of the patient's family, we gave him 1.0 mg of neostigmine intramuscularly to improve his peristaltic movement, and 2 L of polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution through a nasogastric tube for 4 hours to reduce the production and absorption of gut-derived toxins of nitrogenous compounds. Using these treatments, the blood ammonia level decreased to the normal range within 8 hours, and the coma disappeared after 2 days. We suggest that a combination approach of neostigmime and polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution may be one of the most effective treatments for acute hepatic encephalopathy associated with liver cirrhosis and ascites.
