[Malignant mesothelioma of the pleura].

Forty cases of malignant mesothelioma diagnosed from 1989 to 1994 at the Department of Pulmonology, Semmelweis Medical School were reviewed retrospectively. In 6 patients (15%) had a history of exposure to asbestos. The possibility of the malignant mesothelioma was raised by the clinical signs and the results of chest X-ray, chest computed tomography and sonography of the chest at their patients. Diagnosis was made by hystological examination of thoracoscopic or needle pleural biopsy in 15 and 8 cases, respectively, by cytological examination of fine needle pleural biopsy or pleural fluid in 7 and 6 cases, respectively, and by thoracotomy in 5 patients. Diagnosis was confirmed by multiple procedures in 11 patients. In six patients, diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma was made only by autopsy. The patients were staged according to Butchart et al. Longer survival was noted in the patients with earlier stages. Single or combined therapeutic modalities such as surgery (in 5 patients), chemotherapy (in 10 patients) and radiotherapy (in 3 patients) were used with additional symptomatic treatment in the majority of the cases. Pleurodesis also was done in 7 cases. There was no difference in survival among patients had received different treatment.

[Electron microscopic study of nuclear inclusions induced by Vinca alkaloid derivatives].

Authors in the nuclei of Ehrlich-ascites tumour cells as an effect of the derivates of Vinca alkaloids observed formation of inclusions of fibrous, globular and crystalloid type. These structures were examined electronmicroscopically. Author assume, that the formation of these inclusions is a result of the precipitation of the nucleoprotein by the alkaloid.

[Cytomorphological and enzyme histological studies of bilaterally inoculated Dibromdulcit-sensitive and-resistent Yoshida tumors].

In the bilaterally growing DBD sensitive Yoshida tumours deformed nuclear divisions necrosis of the majority of the tumour and appearance of giant cells can be observed due to the single administration of the LD50 of the preparation. The histochemical activity of the LDH the activity alcalyc Adenosine triphosphatase and the nonspecific alcalyc phosphatase become negative while the acidic phosphatase's activity does increase after the administration of the LD25 of the preparation appearance of giant cells are very marked more than 60% of tumours cells are polynuction. The activity of the alcalyc ATP-ase and nonspecific phosphatase decrose's after a transitory increase and become negative while the acid phosphatase's activity increases. In the case of the DBD resistant tumours the morphological and histochemical alternations due to LD50 of the preparation are much slighter and their timecourse is shorter. No morphological and histochemical changes are observed after the administration of LD25 of the preparation.

[Non-specific dye absorption studies in quantitative cytochemical reactions with alkalic fast green and heparin-alcian blue (model experiment)].

Stöchiometria of the alkalic Fast green and Heparin-alcianblue was studied in model experiment by the aid of integrating microdensitometer. The changes of the optical density in cases of Heparin-alcian-blue occurred to be proportional to the histon quantity, in cases of staining with alkalic Fast green nonspecific dye-absorption was revealed. Results of the model experiment indicate that in quantitative cytochemical studies Heparin-alcian-blue should be preferred to alkalic Fast green.

[Peculiar changes in the mitochondrial structure of human glandular cells of adenocarcinoma of the uterine mucosa].

Author observed peculiar alterations in the structure of mitochondria of glandular cells of adenocarcinoma of the endometrium. Majority of the mitochondria reveal some lesions, but at the same time in some of them hyperplasia of the crystae and membranes could be observed. In another group of mitochondria rearrangment of the intracrystal fissures leads to the formation of a "honey-comb" structure. What factors lay in the base of these alterations are as yet unknown. To clear they function further investigations are needed.

[Injuries of the cervical spine].

In connection with 44 patients, who suffered injuries of the cervical spine, the types of the fracture and dislocation of the cervical spine are discussed. The injuries of the cervical spine--with or without injury of the spinal marrow--signify hard tast in respect of therapy. The conservative (extension) treatment of surgical intervention are even nowadays much debated themes in the neurosurgery. The introduction of Crutchfield tongs was a definite advance in the latter years. With this treatment method the restitution of the form, continuity and stability of the cervical spine is possible. In the opinion of the authors, surgical intervention (laminectomy) is necessary only in the case of progressive symptoms of compression of the cervival marrow (liquorstop). The survival of the patients depends often on the quick and proper treatment. The prevention of complications and the quick elimination are of great importance. Safeguarding of the physical and psychical conditions of the patients is the essential requirement of their rehabilitation after injuries of the cervical spine.
