[Congenital cataract extraction with primary posterior chamber IOL implantation].

Congenital cataracts in 41 eyes were extracted with primary implantation of posterior chamber IOLs, of which 35 were the one-piece PMMA variety. The patients were followed up 3-28 months, averaging 9.5 months. Corrected visual acuities of 1.0-1.5 were achieved in 29.3% and 0.5 or better in 85.4% of the eyes. Postoperative complications were few. Among 34 eyes of preoperative low vision, visual acuities of 0.3 or over were restored to 31 eyes (91.2%) immediately after the operation.

[Intraocular lens implantation in Fuchs' syndrome].

10 patients of Fuchs' syndrome underwent ECCE with IOL implantation. The etiopathology of this disease, the prevention and management of intra- and post-operative complications were discussed. Three months after the operation, the rate of corneal endothelial cell loss was 23.96%. After an average follow-up of 20 months, 80% of the cases obtained corrected visual acuity of 0.5 and over, indicating that the procedure had been rewarding and safe.

[Development of visual function in infants and children].

The development of P1 component of VEP was studied in 150 normal infants and children between the age of 2 weeks and 9 years. The results indicates that the VEP consists of simple positive waves within 8 weeks following birth, the latencies of P1 components shorten dramatically from 2 to 4 months, the development of the latencies of low, medium and high spatial frequencies of P1 components reaches adult levels in infants and children of 4 months, 4 years and 9 years, respectively and the VEP amplitudes of infants and children are significantly higher than those of adults. Based on the results of our research, the development of visual function can be divided into 3 phases: the first, within 4 months following birth; the second, 5 months to 4 years and the third, 5 to 9 years.

[Natural history of corneal astigmatism following posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation].

The natural history of corneal astigmatism in 118 eyes following extracapsular cataract extraction and PC IOL implantation demonstrated that the average surgery induced with-the-rule astigmatism of 3.37D one week after the operation declined at a rate of 0.60, 0.63 and 0.39D during the 1st, 2nd and 3rd months respectively, indicating that the with-the-rule astigmatism of 2.00-3.00D would be corrected spontaneously to the normal or physiological status. The relationship between the changes in astigmatism and postoperative vision and the intraocular pressure was discussed.

Some humoral factors and their interaction on acute hypoxic pulmonary pressor response.

To determine the effect of humoral factors and their interaction on the development of acute hypoxic pulmonary pressor response (HPPR), we performed studies in 16 mongrel dogs. We measured plasma levels of noradrenaline (NE), angiotensin II (AII), prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha), 6-keto-prostaglandin F1 alpha (6KPGF1 alpha), thromboxane B2 (TXB2), leukotriene B4 (LTB4) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) before, during and after HPPR. Multiple regression analysis showed that the changes of pulmonary arterial systolic pressure (PASP) and pulmonary arterial diastolic pressure (PADP) correlated well with those of plasma concentration of NE, PGF2 alpha and 6KPGF1 alpha, respectively (r were equal to 0.633 and 0.668, respectively, P < 0.01). The results of orthogonal experiment analysis with an injection of exogenous NE, PGF2 alpha and PGI alpha into main pulmonary artery of dogs showed that NE and the interaction of PGF2 alpha and PGI2 alpha increased PASP (P < 0.05) and PGI2 attenuated PASP (P < 0.01). The interaction of PGF2 alpha and PGI2 and of PGF2 alpha and NE increased PADP(P < 0.01) and PGI2 attenuated PADP (P < 0.01).

[Intraoperative control of corneal astigmatism during cataract extraction with PC IOL implantation].

The surgical keratoscope and Terry surgical keratometer were used in 29 (group a) and 34 (group b) eyes respectively during cataract extraction with PC IOL implantation to monitor the corneal astigmatism and to adjust the tension of sutures. Two weeks after the operation, the corneal astigmatism in group a was 3.50 +/- 1.70D, and that in group b was 2.56 +/- 1.60D. Two months after the operation, 55.2% of the eyes in group a and 38.2% of the eyes in group b had corneal astigmatism > 2.00D, differing significantly from the higher percentage in the controls. The authors opined that the intraoperative use of the surgical keratoscope and Terry surgical keratometer helped reduce the corneal astigmatism following the intraocular operation.

[Rectocele: a sign of the relaxed pelvic floor syndrome].

Routine physical examination, anorectal dynamics, electromyography of the pelvic floor, defecography and bowel transit were made in 45 patients with rectocele. The results showed that the disorder occurred mainly postpartum and always coexisted with other relaxed pelvic floor disorder. The patients had abnormal descent of pelvic floor, which was positively related to the depth of rectocele. Those with rectocele and spastic pelvic floor syndrome showed less descent of pelvic floor and depth of rectocele compared with those without SPFS. Thess suggest that the relationship between rectocele and descent of the pelvic floor is close. The maximum contraction pressure of the anal canal, the sensitive function, and the contractive function of the rectum were significantly decreased in the patients with rectocele, suggesting neurogenic damage.

[Synthesis and radiosensitizing activity of benzimidazoles].

In search for effective radiosensitizer with low neurotoxicity, benzimidazole compounds were synthesized. Reaction of 2-nitrobenzimidazole with ethyl chloroformate yielded ethyl alpha-(2-nitrobenzimidazolyl-1)-formate(1) or ethyl alpha-(2-hydroxybenzimidazolyl-1)-formate(2), depending upon the solvents used. Reaction of 2-nitrobenzimidazole with 1,2-epoxy-3-chloropropane gave a cyclized compound which was confirmed to be benzimidazo(1,2b)-5'-chloromethyl-oxazolidine(3). In attempt to increase hydrophilicity, 1-substituted 2(3'-pyridyl)-5-nitrobenzimidazoles were prepared by reaction of 2-(3'-pyridyl)-5(6)-nitrobenzimidazole(4) with alkyl epoxides or ethyl chloroacetate. Some of the compounds synthesized were tested for radiosensitizing activity in Ehrlich ascites carcinoma-bearing mice. Preliminary results showed that some compounds have radiosensitizing activity. The radiosensitizing enhancement ratio (SER) of compounds 3, 5 and 6 were found to be 1.50, 1.52 and 1.65 respectively.

Doppler echocardiographic evaluation of pulmonary artery pressure in pneumonia of infants and children.

Previously, there was insufficient evidence to confirm that pneumonia in infants and children might lead to the development of pulmonary hypertension. Recently, it has been shown that acceleration time corrected for heart rate (ATc) and the ratios of right ventricular preejection period to right ventricular ejection time (RPEP/RVET) and of right ventricular preejection period to acceleration time (RPEP/AT) derived from Doppler echocardiography correlated well with pulmonary artery pressure (PAP). To approach PAP in patients with infantile pneumonia, we measured RPEP/RVET, RPEP/AT, and ATc in 105 infants and children with pneumonia and in 17 controls, using a commercially available 2-dimensional echocardiograph (Toshiba SSH-40A) with SDS-21B Doppler unit. An increase of varying degrees in both ratios and ATc was noted during acute illness and significant differences in ratios RPEP/RVET and RPEP/AT were found among patients with mild, moderate, and severe disease. This suggested that PAP increased to different extents in the acute stage of illness and that the degree of increase was related to the severity of disease.

Transcriptional down-regulation of the rearranged C-myc expression in murine cell hybrids between a plasmacytoma and a T-cell lymphoma.

Regulation of the rearranged and non-rearranged c-myc expression was studied in murine cell hybrids (SBWI and SBWII) between plasmacytoma (S194) and T-cell lymphoma (BW5147) cells. Expression of the rearranged c-myc of heterogeneous mRNA sizes (1.8 approximately 2.4 kb) was markedly down-regulated in these hybrids regardless of retention of the gene. On the other hand, expression of the non-rearranged c-myc (2.4 kb) was not significantly affected in these hybrids. Treatment of SBWI hybrid cells with cycloheximide enhanced the non-rearranged c-myc 2- to 4-fold but did not release the down-regulation of the rearranged c-myc at all, suggesting that the down-regulation of the rearranged c-myc in the hybrid cells was mainly at a transcriptional rather than a post-transcriptional level. This was supported by the results of nuclear run-on assay: the high level of run-on transcripts in S194 cells declined in SBWI hybrid cells comparable to the level in BW5147 cells. The rearranged c-myc was hemi-methylated in S194 cells and the pattern was the same in SBWI hybrid cells. Furthermore, down-regulation of the rearranged c-myc in the hybrid was also not restored by treatment with 5-azacytidine (5-AzaC), 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) or forskolin, suggesting no causative involvement of DNA methylation or protein phosphorylation in down-regulation. Higher DNase I sensitivity of the rearranged c-myc in S194 cells decreased to a similar extent to that of the non-rearranged c-myc after cell fusion with BW5147 cells. These results suggest that expression of the rearranged c-myc is down-regulated at the level of transcription in murine cell hybrids between a plasmacytoma and a T-cell lymphoma, probably by changing chromatin configuration around the gene from the open to the closed state.

Regional mapping of the FOS oncogene to rat chromosome 6q21----q23.

Using a panel of rat x mouse somatic cell hybrids and in situ hybridization, we determined the chromosomal location of the rat FOS gene locus. Southern blot analysis assigned this oncogene to rat chromosome 6. In situ hybridization confirmed this finding and mapped the gene more precisely to 6q21----q2.
