Small renal cell carcinoma: pathologic and radiologic correlation.

The authors correlated the radiologic and pathologic findings of 36 patients with small renal cell carcinoma (less than or equal to 3 cm in diameter). Tumors were discovered incidentally or by means of mass surveys with ultrasound (US). Computed tomography (CT) and angiography were performed before surgery. Of the 36 tumors, 24 were of solid (alveolar) architecture, five were of papillary architecture, three were of tubular architecture, and four were of multilocular cystic architecture. Cell arrangement was closely correlated with radiologic appearance, especially in regard to tumor vascularity and echogenicity. Histologically homogeneous tumors of solid architecture were hypoechoic at US and hypervascular at angiography and contrast medium-enhanced CT. Tumors of papillary, tubular, and multilocular cystic architecture were hyperechoic at US and hypovascular at angiography. There was no correlation of cell differentiation and cell architecture with echogenicity or tumor vascularity. Tumors with hemorrhage showed marked hyperattenuation at CT. A tumor capsule was observed in 25 patients (69%); this was demonstrated as a rim at US or angiography.

Kinetic studies of the interaction of synthetic RNAs with quinacrine and its analogs.

Temperature-jump relaxation method has been used to study the interaction of synthetic RNAs with quinacrine (QAC) and its analog. Two relaxation times were observed. The dependence of relaxation times on the RNA concentration and optical properties of the RNA-dye complexes suggests that (1) QAC binds to poly-(rA).poly(rU) through two bimolecular reactions including isomerization from one complex form to another and (2) the 2-methoxy group of the acridine ring plays a significant role in the isomerization.

[An outbreak of food poisoning suspected due to Aeromonas and characteristics of the isolated strains].

On June 7, 1990, food poisoning with main symptoms of abdominal pain and diarrhea occurred in Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture. From results of bacteriological examination, three kinds of mesophilic Aeromonas spp. were detected from patients, leftover foods, well water, and cookers, one of which was A. hydrophila which was shown to produce haemolysin thought to be the cause of the food poisoning. On the other hand, A. sobria and A. caviae isolated from various materials did not produce haemolysin. The latter two strains of mesophilic Aeromonas spp. did not produce any other enterotoxins. Therefore, it appears that the well water containing A. hydrophila, A. sobria and A. caviae polluted the foods, which then had caused the food poisoning. Of nine strains of A. hydrophila, five do not dissolve sucrose, and these are typed as serogroup O:22 or O:23. The other four strains dissolve sucrose, and these are typed as serogroup O:16. According to the drug sensitivity test, all of these nine strains of A. hydrophila were resistant to Ampicillin, Erythromycin and Cephaloridine.

[Rapid detection of motile Salmonella in chicken meat by the 1-2 Test].

The 1-2 Test (BioControl) is an enrichment culture/immuno-diffusion assay for detecting Salmonella in foods by use of poly-H-antibodies. The performance of the 1-2 Test was compared with that of the traditional culture method on 85 chicken meat samples. The results were as follows: The detection frequency of Salmonella by the 1-2 Test 24-hour assay (28/85, 32.9%) was greater than that by the 8-hour assay (16/85, 18.8%) and almost equal to that by the traditional method (26/85, 30.6%). The 8-hour assay gave a 46.2% sensitivity and 93.2% specificity. The 24-hour assay gave an 84.6% sensitivity and 89.8% specificity. Detection appeared to show some influence from the number of Salmonella, number of viable cells (SPC) and coliform groups. Differences in serotypes of Salmonella detected by the 1-2 Test and the traditional methods were also observed. Although there were some differing results between the 1-2 Test and the traditional method, this system appears to be useful for detecting Salmonella in foods, since results can be obtained at least 24 hours earlier than by the conventional procedures.

Free radical production by the red tide alga, Chattonella antiqua.

The red tide alga, Chattonella antiqua, was found to show a strong chemiluminescence, using luminol as the reagent, when exposed to ultraviolet irradiation. This luminescence was completely inhibited by ascorbate or catalase, suggesting that hydrogen peroxide was generated by the plankton. Red tide cells exposed to fish gill mucus from young yellowtail resulted in the release of a large number of mucocysts and a weak luminosity, and showed a strong reduction of cytochrome c in the medium. Therefore, the discharge of mucocysts from the red tide, induced by the presence of gill mucus, may be accompanied by the release of active oxygen species. The active oxygen may be involved in depolymerization of mucus glycoproteins from the gill lamellae.

[Pathogenesis and prevention of gastrointestinal complications following transcatheter arterial embolization].

Prospective evaluation of gastrointestinal complications after transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) was performed on 149 TAEs of 133 patients with endoscopy in order to evaluate whether the use of antiulcer medication can prevent such complications. In 21 of 141 TAEs (14%) there developed gastrointestinal complications. The incidence of complications with administration of H2-blocker was 30.4%, whereas the incidence with administration of PGE1 and without medication were 2.8% (p less than 0.01) and 9.0%, respectively. It has been suggested that such complications are mainly due to backflow of the embolic materials to the gastric artery. These findings indicates that decrease of gastric mucosal blood flow due to backflow of the embolic materials to the gastric artery cause the gastrointestinal complications.

Hypovascular hepatocellular carcinoma undetected at angiography and CT with iodized oil.

Eighteen patients with 22 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) lesions less than 2 cm in diameter were examined with conventional angiography, digital subtraction angiography (DSA), and computed tomography (CT) after intraarterial injection of iodized oil (Lipiodol CT). Eight lesions detected at ultrasound examination of eight patients were not identified at conventional angiography, DSA, or Lipiodol CT. At histologic examination, all eight lesions were found to consist of well-differentiated carcinoma of grade I or II on the Edmondson-Steiner scale, and four had fatty change in cancer cells. Percutaneous tissue-core biopsy was indispensable in the diagnosis of well-differentiated HCC lesions that could not be diagnosed with conventional angiography, DSA, and Lipiodol CT.

Selective and persistent deposition and gradual drainage of iodized oil, Lipiodol in the hepatocellular carcinoma after injection into the feeding hepatic artery.

The selective and long-term deposition of iodized oil in the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and its gradual drainage were clinicopathologically analyzed in 13 cases. All patients were Japanese and had an intrahepatic arterial injection of Lipiodol (LIP) mixed with Mitomycin C. The comparison among the follow-up computerized tomography (CT) findings, the observation of the soft x-ray radiogram, and histopathologic studies of the surgical or autopsy materials revealed that the selective deposition of LIP in HCC lasted for a long term, particularly in cases treated by LIP combined with transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE). Also revealed was an extremely gradual decrease of LIP from the HCC. It was thus postulated that, mainly, the accumulated macrophages surrounding LIP around the necrotic cancer tissue and, partially, the intrahepatic lymphatic system itself contributed to this drainage. Further, in histologic sections with lipid staining, x-ray microanalysis proved that the lipid droplets in the cancer tissue included highly concentrated iodine, as a deposition of LIP.

Percutaneous histopathologic evaluation of liver in treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

The results of 25 percutaneous biopsies of the liver from 24 patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma are reported. In all cases, the value of their serum biochemistry (LDH, GOT, GPT and/or alkaline phosphatase) was abnormal and sufficient tissue material was biopsied to obtain a histopathological evaluation. Specimens from five ultrasonically suspected lymphoma of the liver showed tumor involvement histopathologically. Diffuse tumor involvement was also histologically found in three ultrasonically unsuspected livers. Six liver specimens showed degenerative and/or fibrotic change in the new and previously treated patients.

Ultrasonically guided staging splenic tissue core biopsy in patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Ultrasonically guided tissue core biopsy of the spleen was undertaken in eight patients with previously untreated non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in the staging procedure. In all cases, the tissue core specimens that were biopsied were sufficient to diagnose the presence of involvement of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and two of the eight were found to have histologic involvement. There was no complication in this series. It was concluded that this is a safe and reliable technique for the staging of malignant lymphoma.
