[Influences of naomaitong upon cerebral blood flow in dogs].

This experiment has proven that the drug naomaitong can synchronously increase the blood flow of both dog's internal carotid artery and vertebral artery and also can antagonize the decrease of blood flow of both arteries caused by pituitrin. The increase of blood flow of both internal carotid artery and vertebral artery due to administration of naomaitong (1.2 g/kg) through the dog's duodenum is approximately equal to the increase of blood flow of both arteries resulting from the intramuscular injection of papaverine (1 mg/kg). Besides, the dosage of naomaitong is positively correlated to the effect and action of the drug.

A study on genotoxicity of cooking fumes from rapeseed oil.

The present article reports the genotoxic potential of rapeseed oil cooking fume investigated by a battery of short-term tests (Ames test, SCE/V79 in vitro and mice micronucleus in vivo test). The results showed that the cooking fume contained mutagenic activity. In the presence of S9 mix, an increase in the number of the Salmonella TA98 was observed at doses ranging from 1.0 to 5.0 mg/plate, and the SCE frequencies of V79 cell were markedly raised at doses ranging from 0.05 to 0.5 mg.ml-1. The positive result was also obtained in mice micronucleus assay, the mice had inhaled the cooking fume a week earlier. The frequency of mice bone marrow MN-PCE was increased and it showed a remarkable time-dose-response relationship during the 4 weeks exposure. The results suggested that this cooking fume exposure may be a risk factor of lung cancer in Chinese women.

The reverse DNA sequencing using Bst DNA polymerase.

The reverse DNA sequencing (RDS) [1] is a rapid method used to check the DNA sequences by sequencing them from the opposite orientation. Because the RDS is basically a double stranded sequencing, the quality of the sequence patterns so obtained generally is not as good as those obtained by the single stranded sequencing, and extra bands and higher background are produced more frequently. This paper shows that the RDS could now generate as good sequence patterns as those obtained by sequencing on the single stranded DNA template if Bst DNA polymerase instead of the conventional enzymes, such as the Klenow enzyme, was used in the RDS. Bst DNA polymerase is heat stable (optimum reaction temperature 65 degrees C) and has recently been successfully used in the conventional DNA sequencing. The RDS has recently been further simplified to meet the need of large DNA sequencing projects such as the human genome project. The combination of the simplified RDS and the use of Bst polymerase should be expected to facilitate greatly the work on sequence confirmation and correction.

[Detection of gonococcal antigens by Staphylococcus protein A (SPA) coagglutination assay].

Gonococcal coagglutination assay reagent was produced on the basis of a SPA absorbent of specific antibody against Neisseria gonorrhoeae reference strains. Using this reagent, the assay could detect a minimum bacterial concentration of 10(6) CFU/ml. No crossreactivity was found with bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Branhamella catarrhalis, Streptococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Neisseria meningitidis. Fifty-five Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains isolated from patient discharges in 1989 were screened in parallel wing Phadebact monoclonal coagglutination assay reagent and our reagent, the resulting correspondence rate was 100%. We examined 71 suspected gonorrhoea patients by detecting urethral discharges and cervical secretions with our reagent and compared the results with those of the standard culture method: the results were equivalent. It is concluded that this reagent can be used for the rapid identification of N. gonorrhoeae and for the rapid diagnosis of acute infective patients.

An outbreak of poisoning from Penicillium cyclopium contaminated dried persimmon.

It is the first report of an outbreak of 114 food-poisoning cases due to consumption of Penicillium cyclopium contaminated dried persimmon. Gastralgia, diarrhea, dizziness and general malaise are chief symptoms of the poisoning, with incubation period of 2-6 hrs generally and a short disease period (generally recovered within 2-3 days). No enteropathogenic organism, pathogenic coccus and Campylobacter jejuni were detected. Surface fungi counts were 49,000/g, 21.3 times of that discovered in the marketed dried persimmon. Penicillium cyclopium Westling was the dominant fungus isolated. Mouse toxicity tests were carried out with the crude extracts of the fungus culture. Diarrhea, tremor and convulsion were observed before death. During autopsy, necrosis and hemorrhagic foci were observed in G.I. tract after intra-peritoneal injection and intubation. In histo-pathological examination, different degree of necrosis and scaling of gastro-intestinal mucous membrane, lymphocyte infiltration, and necrosis of liver cells and renal tubule epithelial cells could be seen.

[Genetic factor in arteriosclerotic cerebral infarction].

The family information from a group of patients with arteriosclerotic cerebral infarction and their matched controls is reported. The prevalence rate for arteriosclerotic cerebral infarction in the first-degree relatives of the cases was higher than that in the first-degree relatives of the controls. The heritability was estimated as 41 +/- 7%. No significant difference of heritability between males and females was found. The subgroup of less than 65 years of age was most closely associated with genetic factor in the three subgroups. These results suggest that genetic factor plays an important role in the etiology of arteriosclerotic cerebral infarction, especially in those with middle ages of onset.

[An inquiry into the method of improving evaporativity using surfactant].

Based on the understanding that surfactant can reduce the surface tension of liquid layers, improve the power-standing condition and function as a wetter, tests have been conducted and the results show that added with a proper surfactant, the evaporation of an exudate liquid can be increased. Points for attention in selecting surfactants are discussed in the article.

Regulation of lymphocyte motility by macrophages: characterization of a lymphocyte migration inhibitory factor derived from a macrophage-like cell line.

An inhibitory factor on lymphocyte migration was detected using a capillary random migration assay in the culture supernatant of peritoneal exudate macrophages cultured at concentrations greater than 8 x 10(6) cells/ml. After examining different macrophage-like cell lines, J774A.1 cells were found to produce this inhibitory factor, which was termed lymphocyte migration inhibitory factor (LMIF). The inhibitory effect of LMIF on the migration of spleen lymphocytes, thymocytes, and bone marrow cells was determined. The migration of thymocytes was more sensitive to LMIF than was the migration of spleen lymphocytes and bone marrow cells. Interestingly, when the effect of LMIF was tested on the migration of spleen T cells and B cells, T cells were more sensitive than B cells. When the thymocytes were separated by peanut agglutinin into mature and immature thymocytes, the migration of mature thymocytes was more sensitive than that of immature thymocytes, the migration of mature thymocytes was more sensitive than that of immature thymocytes to the effect of LMIF, suggesting that the greatest effect of LMIF was on the migration of mature T cells. Partial purification of LMIF by ion-exchange and gel-filtration chromatography revealed that it is approximately 14,000 in molecular weight and could exist in either monomeric or dimeric forms. The possible role of this factor in an immune response is discussed.

Modulation of lymphocyte motility by beta-endorphin and met-enkephalin.

The opioid peptides, beta-endorphin and met-enkephalin, have been shown to affect the immune system, resulting in either enhancement or suppression of immune response. However, the mechanism of the immunomodulatory effects and the immune cells that are affected by the opioid peptides are unclear. Early studies have provided evidence for their influence on granulocytes, monocytes and lymphocytes. In this study, the effect of beta-endorphin and met-enkephalin on the motility of lymphocyte subpopulations was examined. beta-Endorphin, depending on the concentration tested, has only slight enhancing or inhibitory effect on the motility of spleen lymphocytes; interestingly, met-enkephalin inhibited their motility. However, both beta-endorphin and met-enkephalin have a similar effect on the motility of separated spleen T and B lymphocytes, in that the motility of B lymphocytes was enhanced by both opioid peptides whereas the motility of T lymphocytes was inhibited. In contrast to the inhibitory effect of beta-endorphin and met-enkephalin on mature spleen T lymphocytes, the motility of thymocytes was enhanced by both opioid peptides. The results from this study suggest that the interaction of beta-endorphin and met-enkephalin with lymphocytes is complex and intricate.

Health effects of occupational exposures to vehicle emissions in Shanghai.

The authors investigated the health effects of occupational exposures to vehicle emissions in 745 bus drivers, conductors, and taxi drivers, compared with 532 unexposed controls, in Shanghai. Logistic regression and general linear models were used to examine the relationship between exposure and respiratory illness. Results showed that the prevalences of some respiratory symptoms and chronic respiratory diseases were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the exposed group than in the controls. The adjusted odds ratios for throat pain, phlegm, chronic rhinitis, and chronic pharyngitis were 1.95 (95% CI 1.55-2.46), 3.90 (95% CI 2.61-5.81), 1.96 (95% CI 1.11-3.46), and 4.19 (95% CI 2.49-7.06), respectively. Also, there were exposure time response relationships for the prevalences of phlegm and chronic respiratory disease. Pulmonary function and blood lead levels were not significantly correlated with exposure status. The results suggest that occupational exposure to vehicle emissions may induce detectable adverse health effects.
