[Functional reserve of the ischemic left ventricle with ventricular aneurysm to afterload stress: digital subtraction angiographic assessments].
Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) has been confirmed to be an accurate method for determining left ventricular function. It is a relatively non-invasive technique without inducing premature ventricular complexes. The response of left ventricular function to afterload stress was assessed using DSA for eight patients with old anterior myocardial infarction and ventricular aneurysm including that of the anterior wall (averaging 30.3 months after the acute episodes). Their ages ranged from 36 to 65 years and one patient was a woman. Prior to the investigation, we confirmed that a single DSA procedure did not alter left ventricular function in a pilot study of one patient (No. 8). After initial DSA in the basal state, methoxamine was infused intravenously (1 to 2 mg/min). When aortic systolic blood pressure increased by 30 to 50 mmHg, a second DSA was performed for each patient. Left ventricular volumes and ejection fractions were calculated by the area-length method, and regional wall motion was assessed by the visual method according to the AHA classification and the curvature radius of the apical ventricular aneurysm was calculated. Methoxamine induced neither acute heart failure nor angina pectoris in the present series. The heart rates decreased, and there were a significant increase in end-systolic volumes (p less than 0.05), end-systolic radii (p less than 0.05), and a significant decrease in ejection fractions (p less than 0.02) after methoxamine infusion. In 32 of 40 segments, regional wall motion was unchanged by methoxamine as assessed by the visual method; whereas, in the other eight, there was a deterioration.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Long-term effect of cilostazol on cerebral blood flow in chronic cerebral infarction.
The effect of the oral administration of a new vasodilator, cilostazol (6-[4-(1-cyclohexyl-1H-tetrazol-5-yl) butoxy]-3,4-dihydro-2(1H)-quinolinone, OPC-13013) on cerebral circulation in chronic cerebral infarction was studied by the 133Xenon inhalation method. Mean regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was increased in 6 out of 14 cases after 2 weeks of treatment. Hemispheric rCBF was significantly increased in both the affected and non-affected sides (10.8 and 13.4%, respectively) (p less than 0.05) without causing a change in blood pressure.

Granulated folliculo-stellate cells and growth hormone cells immunostained with anti-S 100 protein serum in the pituitary glands of the goat.
Goat pituitary glands were immunohistochemically studied with antisera for bovine S-100 protein, rat LH beta, FSH, TSH beta, prolactin, ovine GH, and porcine ACTH1-39 by use of the superimposition technique on adjacent sections. Folliculo-stellate (F-S) cells were divided into two categories on the basis of ultrastructural properties: One consisted of a mass of agranular cells in which the pseudolumina were equipped with microvilli and cilia. Elongate gap junctions were often observed among these cells. The other was a group of granulated cells with or without pseudolumina. In this group the gap junctions were shown to be disintegrated. The dense granules 150-250 nm in diameter began to accumulate in the cells. However, neither type of these F-S cells was immunostained for S-100 protein. On the other hand, numerous polygonal, elongate, irregular or stellate cells containing S-100 protein were distributed throughout the gland. Most of them were immunohistochemically identical with the GH cells laden with the secretory granules 250-450 nm in diameter, but some of them were identical to TSH and prolactin cells which immunostained faintly for S-100 protein. This appears to be the first demonstration of GH cells intensely immunostained for S-100 protein.

Failure to produce germinal matrix or intraventricular hemorrhage by hypoxia, hypo-, or hypervolemia.
Our study with midgestational sheep fetuses failed to support a cause-and-effect relation between marked hypoxia with or without hypo- or hypervolemia and rapid surges of blood pressure and the development of germinal matrix or intraventricular hemorrhage. Twenty-nine percent of fetuses exposed to marked hypoxia concomitantly with manipulations of their blood volume and blood pressure developed widespread cerebral necrosis. However, despite this marked anoxic-ischemic brain injury, none developed any germinal matrix or intraventricular hemorrhage. Rapidly and markedly elevating the blood pressure in these fetuses despite the presumed presence of an impaired autoregulation and a probable elevation of their central venous pressure also failed to cause germinal matrix or intraventricular hemorrhage. Marked hypoxia accompanied by reductions in blood pressure brought about by blood withdrawal produced an 80% delayed fetal mortality but not a single instance of germinal matrix or intraventricular hemorrhage.
Dysautoregulation of the cerebral circulation in primary systemic amyloidosis.
A case of primary systemic amyloidosis associated with marked dysautoregulation of the cerebral circulation in response to hypotension is reported. The major amyloid protein was immunoglobulin A lambda type. An autonomic nerve function test showed severe and extensive disturbances of the autonomic nervous system. The cerebrovascular reactivity to 5% CO2 inhalation was spared. To our knowledge, this is the first case to demonstrate that amyloid peripheral autonomic neuropathy can be accompanied by dysautoregulation of the cerebral circulation.
Genetic analysis of three additional fla genes in Salmonella typhimurium.
In Salmonella typhimurium, 27 fla genes responsible for formation of flagella have been identified and assigned to three regions on the genetic map, termed fla regions I to III. By genetic analysis of 1984 non-flagellate mutants obtained from a phase-1 stable strain of S. typhimurium, SJW1103, three additional fla genes were identified; one, termed flaW, was assigned to fla region I and the other two, termed flaV and flaX, to fla region III. By intergeneric complementation tests, the flaW, flaV and flaX genes were shown to be functionally homologous with flaS, flbC and flaP of Escherichia coli, respectively. Electron microscopy showed that flaW and flaV mutants carried hook-basal body structures.
Genetic analysis of H2, the structural gene for phase-2 flagellin in Salmonella.
Non-flagellate H2 mutants were isolated from a phase-2 stable strain, SJW806 H1-gt- H2-enxon vh2-, a derivative of Salmonella typhimurium. By transductional crosses a deletion map and a recombination map of the H2 gene were made. There are three regions especially rich in nonflagellate mutational sites. By the use of the deletion map, mutational sites of 21 flagellar shape mutants were also determined. Most of them were located at two regions which coincide with two of the three regions rich in non-flagellate mutational sites. A gene, vh2, is closely linked to the promoter side of the H2 gene. Three-factor transductional crosses showed that the vh2 gene was on the left of the H2 gene in the present map. The H2 gene forms part of an operon with the distal gene rh1 which specifies the H1 repressor. Thus, a polarity effect of the H2 mutations on the expression of the rh1 gene was examined by observing whether a wild-type H1 allele introduced into the H2 mutants was expressed or not. Many of the H2 mutations were polar, and most of the strongly polar mutations were located in the left (promoter-proximal) half of the H2 gene, while most of the mutations in the right half of the gene were weakly polar or non-polar.
Thanatophoric dysplasia.
Two autopsy cases of thanatophoric dysplasia in male newborn infant are described. They have markedly short-limbs and narrow thoraxes. Histologically, generalized disruption of endochondral ossification with normal resting cartilage was seen at the epiphyseal region of femur. Differential diagnosis from other 3 types of lethal chondrodysplasia is described and the histogenesis of thanatophoric dysplasia is considered with a survey of the literature.
Development of second generation merozoites of Leucocytozoon caulleryi in vitro.
Sporozoites of Leucocytozoon caulleryi were inoculated into specific-pathogen-free (SPF) chickens intravenously. Fourteen days after inoculation, the infected blood, parasitized with second generation merozoites, was collected from the chickens. The blood was then suspended in SPF chicken serum or RPMI-1640 culture medium supplemented with 20% SPF chicken serum in petri dishes, which were cultured at 37 degrees C or 41 degrees C in a humidified atmosphere of 5% CO2. Second generation merozoites in parasitized, immature erythrocytes developed continuously through several substages and finally became micro- and macro-gametocytes after 6 days of incubation.
