Bovine besnoitiosis and its effect on the male reproductive system.

Besnoitia besnoiti and several species of the genus have been reported in a variety of domestic and wild animals in many parts of the world (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). Cutaneous besnoitiosis in cattle has been described as a serious skin condition characterized by painful swellings, alopecia and thickening of the skin (6). It is a chronic, debilitating and occasionally fatal disease with both cutaneous and systemic manifestations (6, 7, 8). Besnoitia cysts and lesions have been observed in the testes, epididymes and blood vessels of bulls (9). The possibility of abortion in cows and sterility in bulls with besnoitiosis has been reported (6). Spontaneous clinical besnoitiosis in cattle with accompanying systemic manifestations has not been fully documented, and the effect of scrotal besnoitiosis on spermatogenesis in bulls has not been previously reported in Nigeria. Case report : Outbreaks of babesiosis, heartwater and suspected cutaneous besnoitiosis were observed in a government farm in the Kano State of Nigeria in March, 1979. The cattle population was over 1500, consisting of exotic (Bos taurus ) and indigenous (Bos indicus ) breeds and their crosses. Clinical Examination : All stages of clinical besnoitiosis were initially observed in 14 bulls and 1 cow in a period of 4 months. The farm was visited bi-weekly for 1 year, during which time 58 bulls and 2 cows showed the lesions. Most of the animals affected with this disease were 3-way crosses of Australian Draughtmaster x Rahaji x Niger Azwak (DM x Rh x AZ). Table 1 summarises the distribution of clinicial cases of besnoitiosis.

Correlations of scores on embedded figures and mirror tracing with preclinical technique grades and PMAT scores of dental students.

For 20 dental students the relationships of field dependency, scores on the dental admissions test, grades in technique courses, and time and error scores on mirror-tracing tests were studied. Significant correlations (-.48, -.58, -.65) were found between field-dependency scores and scores on the perceptual-motor abilities subtest of the Dental Admissions Test and between mirror-tracing test and pre-clinical operative grades (-.53). These preliminary results indicate that study of the perceptual-cognitive styles of dental studies is warranted to evaluate the potential utility of these measures in counseling and admissions. The mirror-tracing tests appear to have potential advantages as objective measures of psychomotor skills and learning ability.

Comparison of measurements of glucose flux rates in wethers and in pregnant and lactating ewes using C14 and H3 labelled tracers.

Glucose flux rates (GFR) were determined, from plateau glucose specific radioactivity values obtained during continuous infusions of [U - 14C] + [2 - 3H], [U - 14C] + [3 - 3H] and [U - 14C] + [6 - 3H] glucose tracers, in wethers fed either 800 g per day of poor quality hay plus 400 g barley per day. GFR determined with [U - 14C] glucose ranged from 15 to 24 mmoles per hour on the hay diet and from 22 to 34 mmoles per hour on the hay plus barley diet. The variation in GRF within animals and between days accounted for most of the total variability. GFR determined with [6 - 3H] glucose were similar to those estimated with [U - 14C] glucose but those determined with [2 - 3H] and [3 - 3H] glucoses were 14 per cent higher. GFR were also determined with [U - 14C] + [6 - 3H] glucose tracers in pregnant ewes fed 1000 g medium quality hay plus 400 g concentrate and in lactating ewes fed different amounts of medium quality hay plus concentrate. GFR, determined with [U - 14C] glucose, ranged from 27 to 49 mmoles per hour in pregnancy and from 54 to 83 mmoles per hour in lactation. At approximately 125 days' gestation there was a significant positive relationship between GFR and total lamb birth weight. Estimates of GFR with [6 - 3H] glucose were 21 per cent higher in pregnancy and 15 per cent higher in lactation than the simultaneous estimates with [U - 14C] glucose.

Addiction therapist: a transient status passage in drug rehabilitation.

The occupations of the first 20 long-term residents in a drug-free therapeutic community are described before admission and during a 2 to 4 year follow-up period. Prior to admission, 11 individuals (55%) were unemployed. At the time of the follow-up, 19 individuals (95%) were either in full-time employment or students, of whom two (10%) were addiction therapists. Five individuals (25%) had been addiction therapists at some time, of whom three had gone on to become full-time students. It is concluded that long-term residence in a therapeutic community is associated with a variety of subsequent occupations and that continued dependence on the community for employment is unusual.

Tissue reaction & tumor response with negative pi mesons.

As a prelude to a randomized trial of negative pi meson (pion) radiotherapy, as compared to conventional radiation treatment, tolerance of several normal tissues was investigated. Fifty-three of 108 patients received at least 2700 peak pion rads at a usual dose rate between 100 and 125 rads daily. The major sites treated were head and neck, pancreas, prostate, rectum and brain. Acute normal tissue reactions, late effects, and tumor response are correlated with the two dose levels. Pancreatic tumors have not fared well. At this point, tumors that can be observed disappear more rapidly, and, for tumors that cannot be observed, symptoms disappear more rapidly and normal tissues exhibit less reaction than with conventional radiotherapy. It is believed that the dose level can be raised an additional 7 percent above the current 4100 rads, measured at the maximum within the treatment volume.

Possible foreign body granuloma of the retina associated with intravenous cocaine addiction.

A 27-year-old man who was a heroin addict had light flashes in front of the right eye and a hemicentral scotoma immediately after intravenous cocaine. The initial ophthalmoscopic appearance was of a white foreign body lying over the papillomacular bundle of the retina in the right eye. This ophthalmoscopic finding was consistent with intraocular talc, cornstarch, or lactose, common diluting agents that are present in intravenous injections of heroin, cocaine, or methylphenidate hydrochloride, and are known to cause systemic embolic phenomena in chronic drug abusers. This glistening crystal on the surface of the retina changed and evolved into a noninfectious but inflammatory organization of retinal granuloma, in which the foreign body crystal could still be visualized at the apex of the lesion. The anterior and posterior segments of the eye remained free of inflammatory signs throughout the course of the organization of the retinal granuloma.

Nitrogen digestion in sheep given poor-quality indigenous hill herbages.

1. In two experiments, the sites of digestion of non-ammonia nitrogen (NAN) and the amounts of urea N recycled to the rumen were measured in mature wether sheep given diets of indigenous hill herbage (Agrostis-Festuca and heather). 2. Duodenal and ileal flow values were obtained using 103Ru-phenanthroline and 51Cr-EDTA markers in animals prepared with simple (T-shaped) cannulas. Amounts of urea N recycled to the rumen were estimated from measurements of the transfer of plasma urea carbon into rumen bicarbonate and the production rate of rumen bicarbonate using 14C-labelled urea and bicarbonate respectively. 3. The flows of NAN at the duodenum and ileum were linearly related to the intake of herbage (P less than 0.001). There was a net gain of non-ammonia N anterior to the duodenum on both diets (at an intake of 460 g organic matter (OM)/d, 3.7 g NAN/d on Agrostis-Festuca and 3.3 g NAN/d on heather). 4. Net digestibility of NAN entering the small intestine was within a normal range on the Agrostis-Festuca (0.58 at 460 g OM intake) diet but low on the heather diet (0.43 at 460 g OM intake). 5. It was calculated that at 460 g OM intake only 0.9 and 1.1 g/d respectively of the duodenal NAN on the Agrostis-Festuca and heather diets could have been derived from urea-N recycled to the rumen. Thus 2.8 g and 2.2 g/d had to be accounted for as non-urea endogenous NAN.

Failure to detect hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in feces of HBsAg-positive persons.

Since previous studies did not provide conclusive data regarding the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in the feces of HBsAg carriers, the feces of 20 HBsAg carriers and six patients with HBsAg-positive active liver disease were examined with use of a reproducible method for concentrating and detecting HBsAg in feces in which bovine serum, which has been shown to protect HBsAg destruction by fecal components, was added to the fecal specimens. HBsAg was not detected in 66 fecal specimens from the 26 HBs-Ag-positive persons. Furthermore, HBsAg could not be detected in the feces of a carrier who had ingested 4 ml of his own serum. This finding suggests that there are factors in the gastrointestinal tract that interfere with the immunoreactivity of the HBsAg and possibly destroy the hepatitis B virus. These findings explain why oral/fecal spread does not play a major role in the transmission of hepatitis B virus.

The modification of personality disturbance in a therapeutic community for drug abusers.

Two personality questionnaires, the MMPI and 16PF, were administered routinely to drug abusers admitted to a newly established hierarchical type of therapeutic community. Questionnaires were repeated at 6 and 12 months with those residents who remained. Comparison of the results with other studies suggests that drug abusers admitted to different treatment centres display a recognizable pattern of personality disturbance, characterized by a combination of neurotic, psychopathic and psychotic elements and an unusual degree of willingness to admit to socially undesirable traits. Twenty-five per cent of residents stayed longer than 6 months. They showed a significant reduction in measured personality disturbance, and at 1 year anxiety was the only outstanding indication of disturbance. The relationship between these results, possible sources of bias and other indices of behaviour change is discussed.
