Ten patients with life-threatening attacks of asthma (status asthmatiucus') were treated with salbutamol inhaled by intermittent positive pressure breathing, and their response in terms of rise in peak flow rate was measured. They were then given intravenous salbutamol and any further increment in peak flow was measured. Hydrocortisone treatment was started simultaneously and the responses to salbutamol were re-measured on each of the next three days. Only two patients initially responded to the aerosol, whereas all save one responded to the intravenous drug. The two who responded initially to the aerosol were the two who were able to produce sputum at the time of admission. All patients subsequently responded to the aerosol, and the onset of this response correlated closely with the beginning of sputum production. Sympathominetics should be given parenterally to patients in severe asthma if the response to inhaled drug is reduced or absent.

Seven-day nutrient intakes of 517 Head Start and day care children participating in USDA's Special Food Service Programs for Children in Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas were assessed. Protein, vitamin A, and ascorbic acid levels from diets served at the centers were judged to be adequate, while calories and B vitamins were below recommendations but proportional to each other. Calcium intake from center diets did not increase proportionately as the number of meals and snacks increased. Nutrient contributions were only slightly greater from center diets when two meals and two snacks were provided than when one meal and one snack were served. Home diets made substantial contributions to the diets of all children, resulting in little difference in total nutrient intakes between children receiving fewer or more meals and snacks at the centers. Iron was the nutrient supplied in least amount in relation to recommendations, when intakes from home and center were combined.

In a survey on the occurrence of infantile autism in New South Wales it was found that 21-9% of children had at least one foreign-born parent whose native language was not English. In terms of population incidence for New South Wales, Italy and Yugoslavia were under-represented while Greece and Germany were significantly over-represented. The stresses faced by migrants in a new country were discussed in terms of possible contributing agents and in particular, the cultural traditions of the Greeks and their adjustment problems were highlighted. It was suggested that the stresses of cultural change and the socioeconomic pressures borne by the parents resulted in deprivation of their children who were also exposed to a confused language environment, and that a combination of these variables could lead to decompensation into an autistic state in an already vulnerable child.

Two extreme dikaryotic idolates chosen from a large sample of a localised population of Schizophyllum commune exhibited a considerable amount of genetical variation for growth rate at the near ambient temperature of 20 degrees C and at the higher temperature of 30 degrees C. The potential variation within these extreme isolates were greater than the variation observed in the whole sample. Regression analysis of the variation in growth rate of the dikaryotic progeny of the extreme isolates on that of their component monokaryons showed that the nature of gene action was not the same in these two stages of the life cycle. The simple additive-dominance model of gene action was adequate to explain the variation in growth rate in both of the extreme isolates at both of the temperatures. The small deviations from this model could be accounted for by unequal gene frequencies due to small sample size although a low incidence of non-allelic interactions could not be rule out. Directional dominance for growth rate was detected in both isolates at the more normal temperature and it was opposing in direction in the two isolates. In the slow growing isolate the dominance was for faster growth and in the fast growing isolate it was for slower growth. This is expected for a character which displays overall ambi-directional dominance if isolates with more extreme growth rates than those recovered in the population sample are eliminated by stabilising selection. The dominance is temperature dependent being ambi-directional in both isolates at the higher temperature. Environmental heterogeneity, the buffering effects of directional dominance and genotype-environment interactions and opposing selective forces operating on the monokaryotic and dikaryotic stages of the life cycle are possible contributory factors to the considerable free and potential variability displayed in this small, localised population.
Sebum excretion rate was measured before and after occlusions of the skin in eleven subjects. The sebum excretion rate rose significantly following occlusion, confirming the view that there is an obstruction to the outflow of sebum with keratin hydration.
In a double-blind crossover clinical trial, 10 healthy volunteers received placebo and 2 mg glucagon intramuscularly preceding barium enema examination on separate days. In addition, 50 patients were given either placebo or 2 mg glucagon prior to barium enema examination in a double-blind study. The results of 38 variables determined on each study population were similar. When glucagon was given, both the patients and examiners noted significantly less discomfort and more bowel relaxation. There were no significant changes in pulse, blood pressure, or electrocardiogram. Adverse reactions did not occur frequently enough to allow confident comparison of placebo and glucagon. It is concluded that the use of glucagon can provide a more comfortable barium examination with acceptable safety.

Patients with chloracne were investigated and the results compared with data matched for age and site from patients with acne vulgaris. The ultrastructural appearances of pilo-sebaceous ducts in both groups were similar. The industrial group had significantly fewer C. acnes than the patients with ordinary acne. They also showed a significant increase in the surface lipid percentage composition of squalene, wax ester and cholesterol and this was associated with a significant decrease in the triglyceride free fatty acids and total triglyceride pool. We suggest that the acnegenic agent has produced its effect by modifying the metabolism of the pilo-sebaceous fluid.
