[Experimental study on erysipeloid arthritis in the rabbit after blockage of lymph drainage].

The lymph drainage was radically blocked in 29 rabbits. One to three days after the operation Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae was inoculated subcutaneously into the animals. Some control animals were injected with agents of erysipelas and some only with the sterile solution without additional blockade of the lymph drainage. Light and electron microscopy as well as immuno-histological tests showed that the erysipelas arthritis developing in rabbits closely resembles human rheumatoid arthritis with exsudative-necrotising changes of the synovial membrane, proliferation of synovial cells and subsynovial, perivascular plasmacell, and lymphocyte infiltration. The changes were not intensified by the additional blockade of the lymph drainage, when comparing the side with lymph drainage blockade and the non-operated side. The results may be explained by a marked pathogenetic importance of the erysipelas infection in comparison to the relatively mild, lymphostate dependent alterations as well as by mobilisation of macrophages on the operated side.

Comparison of liaison and staff nurses in discharge referrals of postpartum patients for public health nursing follow-up.

The purpose of this study was to compare hospital staff nurses to public health liaison nurses in the accuracy and cost of postpartum referrals for public health nursing follow-up in the community. In the before phase of the study, public health liaison nurses assessed 304 mothers to determine the need for a follow-up visit by the public health nurse. In the after phase, staff nurses assessed 326 mothers. Public health nurses, unaware of the identity of the referring nurse and the referral decision, judged whether their visit had been required. Staff nurses correctly identified a higher proportion of referrals requiring public health nurse follow-up than liaison nurses. Although they referred more clients who did not require a public health nurse visit, costs of referrals by staff nurses remained lower.

Catalyzed and assisted protein folding of ribonuclease T1.

The small single-domain protein ribonuclease T1 (RNase T1) and variants thereof are good substrates for investigating the mechanisms of catalyzed and assisted protein folding. RNase T1 contains two cis prolines and two disulfide bonds, and the kinetic mechanism of its folding is well known. The wild-type form and designed variants that differ in the number prolines and of disulfide bonds were used as substrates to study the catalysis of folding by prolyl isomerases and protein disulfide isomerases. In its unfolded form, a marginally stable variant of RNase T1 binds to the chaperone GroEL and could thus be used to elucidate the kinetic mechanism of GroEL-mediated protein unfolding.
