The broadening of spin-label absorption lines resulting from spin-exchange reactions that occur during collision with paramagnetic Ni2+ is diminished when Ni2+ binds to phospholipid vesicles. Subsequent addition of non-paramagnetic ions that compete for binding sites releases Ni2+ into solution and restores the line-broadening. The concentrations of various ions required to achieve this effect was used to order the ions with respect to their binding to vesicles containing phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. The relative strengths of binding for those ions studied were: Ca2+ > Mg2+ > Zn2+ > Sr2+ > Ba2+. The spin-broadening assay was also used to study the effects of two proteins on the availability of Ni2+-binding sites on the vesicles. Ribonuclease, which is thought to associate electrostatically as an extrinsic protein on the surface of vesicles, completely blocked the Ni2+-binding sites at comparatively low protein concentrations. Quantitative considerations of these data suggest the possibility that Ni2+ may bind preferenetially to phosphatidylglycerol, and that these binding sites are aggregated in the ribonuclease-containing vesicles. In contract to ribonuclease, cytochrome c does not block Ni2+-bindings sites on the phospholipid vesicles, but rather contains sites of its own that bind Ni2+, both when the protein is in solution and when it is associated with the vesicles. These results are consistent with other studies which suggest that cytochrome c becomes partially embedded in membrane bilayers and associates with phospholipid molecules through hydrophobic interactions.

On principle every vesical tumour should be resected at first transurethrally. The TUTUR allows an exact establishment of the penetration depth of the tumour. The transurethral electro-resection gives representative tissue for the histological examination. For the majority of the superficially infiltrating tumours it represents the method of choice with curative aim. In the treatment of the progressed vesical carcinomas the TUTUR with palliative aim gives immense advantages. Using the developing paravesical inflammation wall the following secondary (and more) resection into the perivesical fatty tissue is possible. The intervention can be repeated at every time it is not mutilating does not cause any stoma problems or metabolic derangements as after discharge of the urine and may be suggested to patients in a general condition which forbids an open surgical intervention. The resection can improve the quality of the patient's life for a long time without great stress and thorough changes of the life habits of old people. However the resection treatment will be successful only then, when it will be performed by an experienced (in transurethral operations) operator with a technically good instrumentarium.

Statistical procedures were utilized to evaluate the concentration dependence of labeling by ferritin-conjugated lectins on four different rat cells: hepatocytes, normal thymocytes, Friend virus-induced rat tumor cells and feline sarcoma virus-induced rat sarcoma cells. Labeling by ferritin conjugates of concanavalin A, wheat germ agglutinin and Ricinus communis agglutinins I and II was quantitated by counting the number of ferritin granules on 600 Angstrom membrane segments. Relationships between the arithmetic means and variances for sample populations from each cell and ferritin-lectin combination were used to define four types of topographical distributions: uniform/ordered, uniform/random, random and clustered. It was found that the distribution and/or density of surface-bound lectin was concentration-dependent for all four ferritin-lectins. The nature of this dependency was complex and varied with both lectin and cell type.
Since its introduction through Hollander 30 years ago the interpretation of the value of the insulin test following vagotomy have been discussed. For the individual patient no correlation between the incidence of ulcer recurrence and the result of the insulin test has been found. In addition, the risk of hypoglycemia seems to be too high for diagnostic purposes. Therefore, to evaluate the outcome after vagotomy basal acid output, pentagastrin stimulated acid secretion and endoscopy are emphasized as reliable methods.
From the viewpoint of a district hospital in which fiberoptic endoscopy of the upper digestive tract has been carried out since 1970, experiences and results to more than 1900 endoscopic examinations of the upper gastro-intestinal tract are communicated with forty per cent of the examined patients being older than 40 years. According to our experiences we see, when observing the indications and contra-indications, no age limit for such a method of examination. This endoscopic examination presents in our view a valuable enrichment of the diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities of medical care of elderly citizens.
No association between breast cancer and treatment with neuroleptic agents agents was detected in a study of 5463 women who died or underwent breast biopsy at the Norristown State Hospital between 1940 and 1974. The method of proportionality was used to evaluate the frequency with which breast cancer occurred at the hospital; cases of breast cancer were related to deaths from other cancers and to deaths from all causes other than breast cancer. Deaths and cancers that occurred within 1 year of hospital admission were excluded from the analysis. To allow for a 10-year transition period and for latency in the development of breast cancer, comparison was made between the 15 years preceding the introduction of neuroleptic agents into medical practice (1940 to 1954) and the second decade after the introduction (1965 to 1974). Although neuroleptic agents were used extensively for treatment of patients at the hospital, there was no statistically or medically significant change in the indicated incidence of breast cancer at the hospital during the neuroleptic period. The study did not rule out the possibility that neuroleptic agents might have some effect on breast cancer after a very long latency period.
Heart failure exists when either the systolic or diastolic operation of the ventricle is impaired to a degree that, despite compensatory mechanisms, the demands of the peripheral organs are not satisfied, the peripheral muscle shortens inadequately, and/or the pulmonary or systemic venous system becomes congested from high filling pressures. Since every pumping system has finite limits and can fail if excessive and prolonged demands are made on it, any definition of failure must take into consideration the degree of stress imposed and whether or not the cardiac response is appropriate or subnormal. When failure is present, it becomes essential to discern whether it involves the intrinsic pumping structures of the heart, the myocardial cells, or, rather, whether failure of one of the other components of the integrated cardiovascular system (for example, valvular dysfunction, ruptured ventricular septum) has occurred.
After references to definition, anatomic and physiologic foundations the author deals with the pathology of priapism. A clinical systematization of the diseases occurring together with priapism according to causal points of view is no more worth being advocated. It is completely unclarified to which extent the disease actually participates in priapism. After the description of the possibilities of a conservative medical treatment to the heparin and fibrinolysis therapy it is referred to the importance of the continuous drainage of the corpora cavernosa after Grayhack and Quackels. It is reported on two patients operated according to Grayhack. Results of surgical therapy reported in publications of the last time refer to an essential improvement of the prognosis of priapism.
Report of a 2-years-period of obstetrical work in the maternity-hospital of the Univeristy, Oran in Algeria. Caesarean section as the most important obstetrical operation is examined more closely with regard to the indication and the methods of operation. The incidence of uterine rupture and caesarean hysterectomy is reported. Finally common experiences are mentioned.
Renal biopsies with a new "lumboscopic" (half-open) technique were performed in 109 patients. Access to the kidney was gained by a small flank incision and biopsies from the renal cortex were taken under vision through the lumboscope. The biopsies were successful in all cases. The advantages of the new technique are convincing and lumboscopy suited to replace the regular open biopsy procedure.
It was expected that the incidence of skin cancer would be related to the known high arsenic levels in water supplies of Lane County, Oregon. Incidence rates were based on all histopathologically confirmed cases among Lane County residents diagnosed during 1958-1971 and were compared to mean water arsenic levels measured during 1968-1974. Basal cell carcinoma had a mean annual incidence rate of 88 per 100,000, a 5:4::M:F sex ratio, and an increasing risk for both sexes in urban areas. Squamous cell carcinoma incidence was 50 per 100,000 and showed 2:1:M:F sex ratio but no urban predilection. Neither type of skin cancer was directly related to the arsenic levels as expected, although sporadic individuals with sufficient exposure could manifest the relationship. Fewer than expected drinking water sources were found to contain high arsenic content, so that the Lane County data do not necessarily contradict previous reports of positive correlation. The basal cell carcinoma pattern suggested that this disease might be potentiated by urban air pollutants.
In a study of the kidney biopsies from 192 patients, the results, intra- and postoperative complications, and specific advantages and disadvantages of the conventional open biopsy are compared with those of the half-open, lumboscopic technique. Most of the advantages clearly confirm the superiority of the lumboscopic technique, which, thus has the necessary prerequisites for replacing the regular surgical biopsy.
A case is described of an asymptomatic woman who had typical findings of mild pulmonic stenosis. Right heart catheterization revealed a 44 mm. Hg gradient across the pulmonary outflow tract, and a filling defect was discovered by angiography. On surgical exploration, the defect was found to be a benign cyst attached to the anterior leaflet of the pulmonary valve.
