AIM: To study chemiluminescence (CL) of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNL) in peripheral blood of patients with acute mild and moderate dysentery caused by Shig. Flexneri in response to Re- and S-chemotype lipopolysaccharide (LPS) Sh. Flexneri and agonists fMLP, PMA and OZ. RESULTS: PMNL population proved functionally heterogeneic, correlating with acute dysentery severity. Subgroups of PMNL varied by CL amplitude, reserve ability to additional stimulation. LPS rather modulated CL of PMNL than stimulated it. CL intensity depended on LPS structure and concentration. Mild acute dysentery was characterized by pool of primed PMNL which had higher functional reserves. CONCLUSION: CL analysis can be used for raising accuracy of dysentery prognosis and severity, assessment of implications of functional state of neutrophil granulocytes for support of antiendotoxin immunity in acute dysentery.

A new version of a two-dimensional electrophoretic catalog of proteins of the human kidney and of various morphological and functional structures of the human kidney is presented; it contains information about 179 polypeptides. The following proteins were identified: crystallin, albumin, mitochondrial superoxide dismutase, actin, fatty acid-binding protein, alpha-ATP-synthase, and transferrin. Some protein groups are specific for certain morphological structures.

A clinical trial of the new antidiarrheal drug of antisecretory action fluorasol was studied with patients with salmonellosis and food toxic infections. 65 patients had moderate and 53 severe symptoms. It was established that fluorasol was superior to basic rehydration therapy in relieving diarrheal syndrome irrespective of severity of acute intestinal infections. Clinical effects on intoxication were not registered. Antidiarrheal activity of fluorasol was confirmed on the model of experimental diarrhea on isolated loops of the rat small intestine. Liquid secretion into the lumen of small intestinal isolated loops in the presence of fluorasol substance fell twofold compared to control loops.

A stereometric value of secretion of the thyroid C-cell is developed. The method is based on the count of sublemmal secretory granules. To verify the method applicability, a correlation analysis is carried out.
Acute phase proteins (albumin, prealbumin, transferrin, haptoglobin) and the results of spontaneous and load tests of lipopolysaccharide-positive neutrophils (LPS-PN) in peripheral blood were studied in the course of acute colitic dysentery in 34 patients. It is shown that at the height of the disease there was a fall in the levels of albumin, prealbumin, transferrin while haptoglobin levels were elevated. More persistent and pronounced changes were noted in patients with severe course of acute dysentery. In acute period of the disease there were low values of spontaneous and load LPS-PN tests depending on the disease severity. None of the above parameters returned to control levels within 5-6 days after the start of the treatment.
The review summarizes recent achievements in biochemistry of basal lamina which is highly specialized structural element of extracellular matrix. Structural and functional characteristics of main basal lamina proteins are reviewed including collagen type IV, laminin, nidogen, and heparan sulfate-containing proteoglycans. Special attention is paid to characteristics of structure and biochemical composition of renal glomerular basal lamina which is one of the main components of renal filtration barrier. Possible methods of investigation and characterization of new basal lamina proteins are discussed which help in understanding of biochemical composition of this structure.
The study was made of lipopolysaccharide-binding activity of peripheral blood neutrophils (LBA) and content of albumin, prealbumin, transferrin, haptoglobin in patients with mild, moderate and severe course of acute dysentery and food poisoning. Uniformity of changes in the above parameters irrespectively of etiology of acute intestinal infections is discovered. Inhibition of LBA in acute disease, the pattern of acute-phase proteins time-course changes, i.e. reduced levels of albumin, prealbumin, transferrin and elevated ones of haptoglobin, more persistent and marked in severe course were registered.
