Leaching behavior of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in shredder residues.

It is well known that some kinds of waste contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as PCDD/DFs and PCBs. Leaching behaviors of these chemicals, however, have not been focused so much because of their low leachability. On the other hand, shredder residues originated from automobiles and electric appliances consist mainly of plastics, such as PVC, which contain additives including DEHP. In this study, contents analyses and leaching tests with and without surfactant-like substances for shredder residues were conducted. As a result, shredder residues from automobile and electric appliance contained PCBs in ppm level and a quantity of PCDD/DFs. Surfactant-like substances increase the leaching concentration of POPs. DEHP also leached out considerably even though using distilled water.

The spinal monoaminergic systems relating to ejaculation. II. Ejaculation and serotonin.

The effects of Ro 4-4602 and L-5-hydroxytryptophan on manually induced ejaculation in dogs and on spinal monoamines in dogs were investigated. From the results obtained in the study it was concluded that the serotonergic system in the spinal cord is an intermediate mechanism which inhibits the occurrence of ejaculation. Both the results in this study and the results in our previous paper seem to indicate that ejaculation occurs with the reconciliation of the spinal dopaminergic and serotonergic system.

On suppression of ejaculation by Alpha-methyldopa.

Alpha-methyldopa caused inhibition of ejaculation. The cerebral mechanism which induced the inhibition was pursued by determining changes of brain monoamines in dogs. As a result, suppression of the dopaminergic system in the brain by alpha-methyldopa is found to be the origin of the inhibition of ejaculation. This inhibition was recovered by L-dopa with pretreatment with a peripheral decarboxylase inhibitor.

Role of the spinal monoaminergic systems in suppression of ejaculation by alpha-methyldopa.

Alpha-methyldopa causes inhibition of ejaculation by suppressing the dopaminergic system in the brain. The spinal mechanism which works together with this brain inhibitory mechanism was persued by determining the changes of spinal monoamines in dogs. As a result, it was found that suppression of the dopaminergic system by alpha-methyldopa is caused also in the spinal cord just as in the brain and that this suppression can be a direct origin of the inhibition of ejaculation.
