Canine conjunctival papilloma: a review of five cases.

Five cases of unilateral bulbar conjunctival papillomata are reported in five different breeds of dog. The dogs ranged from six to nine years of age, four were female and one was male. In all but one case the mass was an incidental finding. The morphology and histopathology are described. The authors have been unable to find any details or descriptions of this type of papilloma in the veterinary literature.

The health needs of adults with learning disabilities and the Health of the Nation strategy.

Studies of mortality and morbidity relating to people with learning disabilities are reviewed within the context of the five Health of the Nation Key Areas. It is concluded that the Key Areas have become increasingly relevant as a result of increased longevity and changing lifestyles. For example, both cardiovascular disease and cancers appear to be more common than before, and a high proportion of people with learning disabilities carry one or more risk factors associated with morbidity and mortality from these causes. However, there are a range of other health needs in this population which should not be overlooked by an undue focus on the five Key Areas, and these are also discussed. The efficacy of programmes seeking to limit the risk factors of obesity and poor fitness are reviewed. There is a need for further evaluation of such programmes, particularly in community settings. The literature relating to primary health care services suggests that professional training and access to services need to be improved for this group, in order to address health needs both within and without the Health of the Nation priorities.

Big Brothers: impact on Little Brothers' self-concepts and behaviors.

The impact a Big Brother has on a Little Brother's self-concept and behavior was examined for 45 boys ages 7 to 15. The Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America is a United Way agency dedicated to supplying children from single-parent homes with an adult volunteer of the same sex. The adult serves as a friend and role model for the child. Boys who were matched (n = 23) with a Big Brother were compared to boys who were unmatched (n = 22) but were on a waiting list to receive a Big Brother. All boys completed a self-concept measure, and their mothers completed a checklist regarding the behavior of her child. Results indicated that boys who had a Big Brother reported significantly higher self-concepts than did those who were unmatched. Scores on the behavioral instrument did not yield significant differences between groups. Implications of the findings and suggestions for future research are discussed.

An oleate 12-hydroxylase from Ricinus communis L. is a fatty acyl desaturase homolog.

Recent spectroscopic evidence implicating a binuclear iron site at the reaction center of fatty acyl desaturases suggested to us that certain fatty acyl hydroxylases may share significant amino acid sequence similarity with desaturases. To test this theory, we prepared a cDNA library from developing endosperm of the castor-oil plant (Ricinus communis L.) and obtained partial nucleotide sequences for 468 anonymous clones that were not expressed at high levels in leaves, a tissue deficient in 12-hydroxyoleic acid. This resulted in the identification of several cDNA clones encoding a polypeptide of 387 amino acids with a predicted molecular weight of 44,407 and with approximately 67% sequence homology to microsomal oleate desaturase from Arabidopsis. Expression of a full-length clone under control of the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter in transgenic tobacco resulted in the accumulation of low levels of 12-hydroxyoleic acid in seeds, indicating that the clone encodes the castor oleate hydroxylase. These results suggest that fatty acyl desaturases and hydroxylases share similar reaction mechanisms and provide an example of enzyme evolution.

Gluconeogenesis and intrahepatic triose phosphate flux in response to fasting or substrate loads. Application of the mass isotopomer distribution analysis technique with testing of assumptions and potential problems.

We measured gluconeogenesis (GNG) in rats by mass isotopomer distribution analysis, which allows enrichment of the true biosynthetic precursor pool (hepatic cytosolic triose phosphates) to be determined. Fractional GNG from infused [3-13C]lactate, [1-13C]lactate, and [2-13C]glycerol was 88 +/- 2, 89 +/- 3, and 87 +/- 2%, respectively, after 48 h of fasting. [2-13C]Glycerol was the most efficient label and allowed measurement of rate of appearance of intrahepatic triose phosphate (Ra triose-P), by dilution. IV fructose (10-15 mg/kg/min) increased absolute GNG by 81-147%. Ra triose-P increased proportionately, but endogenous Ra triose-P was almost completely suppressed, suggesting feedback control. Interestingly, 15-17% of fructose was directly converted to glucose without entering hepatic triose-P. IV glucose reduced GNG and Ra triose-P. 24-h fasting reduced hepatic glucose production by half, but absolute GNG was unchanged due to increased fractional GNG (51-87%). Reduced hepatic glucose production was entirely due to decreased glycogen input, from 7.3 +/- 1.8 to 1.1 +/- 0.2 mg/kg/min. Ra triose-P fell during fasting, but efficiency of triose-P disposal into GNG increased, maintaining GNG constant. Secreted glucuronyl conjugates and plasma glucose results correlated closely. In summary, GNG and intrahepatic triose-P flux can be measured by mass isotopomer distribution analysis with [2-13C]glycerol.
