Isolated aneurysm of the iliac artery is considered to be a rare disorder, although iliac aneurysm associated with abdominal aortic aneurysm is more common. Its clinical diagnosis is difficult, because symptoms are absent if an aneurysm is small, and because symptoms often mimic urogenital, neurological or gastrointestinal diseases if an aneurysm grows large without rupture. We reported a 40-year-old woman with isolated aneurysm of the left external iliac artery caused by giant cell arteritis, and surgically treated with success.
Prolonged storage of hearts in a viable condition is one of the most important problems of cardiac transplantation. Recently we have developed the new perfusion system and succeeded in preserving hearts extracorporeally for 24 hours in beating condition. In this series nine canine hearts were preserved for 24 hours by this perfusion method. Three of them were only for preservation and six were transplanted orthotopically into the recipient dogs after 24 hours preservation. These hearts were examined by light and electronmicroscopy at the different stages, namely after 24 hours preservation, at 24 hour after transplantation, on 7th day after transplantation. The morphological study demonstrated that myocardium showed no evidence of structural damage. This perfusion system is newly developed and one step to the clinical use for long-term heart preservation.

Dominant lethal studies were conducted in SD male rats with 5 halogenated 3-carbon compounds that are structurally similar to a known mutagen 1,2-dibromo-3-chloropropane (DBCP). 1,2,3-Tribromopropane induced dominant lethal mutation especially in the early spermatid stage. This finding was almost the same as that obtained after DBCP treatment. The estimated dominant lethal mutation index of a group treated with 1,2-dibromopropane was marginal at week 1 of testing. On the other hand, bromopropane, 1,2,3-trichloropropane and 1-chloropropane produced negative responses for induction of dominant lethals.
The method is described for determination of a metabolite of ethylenethiourea (ETU) in rats. ETU and its metabolites were extracted from plasma into ethanol after collecting the blood from female rats treated orally with ETU. Then the extract was cleaned up on a silica gel column chromatography and examined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). About 0.014 ppm of 1-methylthiourea was detected as the metabolite of ETU in plasma collected 2 h after an oral administration of 200 mg/kg of ETU.
Pyrimethamine (PY) was mixed with mashed feed and given to the Göttingen miniature pig (G-mini) during gestional days 11-35. Major malformations such as cleft palate, club-foot and micrognathia were observed in 11 out of 16 newborns from 3 pregnant sows which received 3.6 mg/kg/day. Two sows of a high-dose group (7.2 mg/kg) showed severe anemia and low appetite during the experiment and did not give birth. No malformation was found in 22 newborns of low-dose groups (0.9 and 1.8 mg/kg). Among 130 offspring which died before weaning out of 505 from 47 farrows in a breeding farm, major teratoses such as cleft palate were found in 8 newborns.
A clear correlation expressed by the following equation was observed between the preoperative left ventricular end-systolic eccentricity (epsilon s) and the percentage change of the left ventricular dimension (% delta D) in chronic valvular heart diseases: % delta D = 88.37 epsilon s - 48.16 (r = 0.66, p less than 0.001). Therefore, epsilon s may function as an index for predicting the postoperative cardiac performance independent of the affected valvular locations and the morphology of the lesions.
The diameter of the mitral annulus as measured on the long axis by two-dimensional echocardiogram was found to correlate well with the size of the sewing ring used to replace the mitral valve in 35 consecutive patients. The size of the prosthesis which was used could be predicted within 1 mm of error in 83% of the mitral stenosis (MS) patients and in 76% of the mitral regurgitation (MR) patients in the study. Preoperative echocardiographic estimation of the size of the mitral valve annulus and prediction of the sewing ring size of the prosthetic valve used could reduce the incidence of valve prosthesis-patient mismatch.
This study was conducted to determine efficacy of FT-207 to prevent hematogenous peri-operative metastasis of lung cancer. A total of 16 patients consisting of 10 with squamous cell cancer, 6 with adenocarcinoma were evaluated in this study. The protocol of this study consisted of the pre-and peri-operative chemotherapy, giving 1000 mg of FT-207 suppository daily for 10 days. 5-FU plasma concentration in the systemic circulation during surgery was 0.01 mcg/ml. 5-FU tissue concentration of the normal lung was 0.07 mcg/g, and cancerous tissue (squamous cell ca 0.11 mcg/g, adenocarcinoma 0.12 mcg/g), and lymph nodes 0.15 mcg/g. It was found in this study that the pre-and peri-operative adjuvant chemotherapy with FT-207 was effective to prevent operation-induced hematogenous metastasis of lung cancer.
