The relationship between plasma progesterone (P(4)) levels before and after superovulation treatment and embryo yield and quality was examined in Japanese Black cattle. It is concluded that a plasma P(4) level at the start of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) injections is related to embryo quality. The P(4) level of over 3.0 ng/ml appears to be useful in preselection of donors when we want to get more than 8 normal (transferable) embryos on the average.

Three chief cell types were studied in 8 canine mixed mammary tumors--luminal epithelial cells, myoepithelial cells, and filament cells, the last being the "stellate" cells recognized by light microscopists. Most cytoplasmic filaments in the myoepithelial cells were 5 to 8 nm thick, whereas another type of filaments were scattered, 8 to 10 nm thick. Almost all cytoplasmic filaments in the filament cells were 8 to 10 nm thick. In the adenomatous parts of the tumors, myoepithelial cells were chiefly seen, along with luminal epithelial cells. Filament cells were rarely observed without intercellular accumulation of mucoid. The filament cells were largely confined to the myxomatous and chondromatous parts of the tumors. The presence of cells of transitional forms in adenomatous areas suggested that the filament cells were derived from the myoepithelial cells.
Alkaline phosphatase (ALK-P) reactions at the light and electron microscopic levels were performed on eight canine mammary mixed tumours. In the morphologically normal gland next to the tumours, the myoepithelial cells and the stromal tissues near the acinar basement membranes both showed a positive ALK-P reaction by light microscopy. At the electron microscopic level, those parts of the myoepithelial cell membrane that were in contact with other cells--myoepithelial or lumenal epithelial--showed an ALK-P-positive reaction, as did the adjacent stromal tissue. The characteristic tumour cells, at sites of early proliferation, were ALK-P-positive, while in the mucoid and chondroid areas of the mixed tumours they were largely ALK-P-negative by light microscopy. By electron microscopy, those neoplastic cells which were in contact with other cells typically showed a positive ALK-P reaction, while those cells which were in contact with mucoid or chondroid matrix were largely negative. Although the cytoplasmic filaments of the neoplastic cells were 10 nm thick, and those of normal myoepithelial cells were 6 to 8 nm thick, the observations reported provide further evidence for the view that the essential cells of the canine mammary mixed tumour are derived from myoepithelial cells.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Commercially available bupivacaine is a racemic mixture of S (-)- and R(+)-enantiomers. Although the S(-)-enantiomers levobupivacaine and ropivacaine are less toxic to the cardiovascular and central nervous systems than bupivacaine, their relative efficacy has not been determined. This study directly compares the dose response of levobupivacaine, ropivacaine, and bupivacaine following epidural and intrathecal administration in the rat. METHODS: The time course of change in tail-flick latency and qualitative motor function was studied in rats following epidural or intrathecal administration of 0.25-0.75% levobupivacaine, ropivacaine, or bupivacaine in blinded, randomized fashion. RESULTS: Levobupivacaine and bupivacaine produced comparable and significantly enduring antinociceptive effects compared with ropivacaine at all test concentrations following both epidural and intrathecal administrations. Duration of motor block at lower local anesthetic concentrations (epidurally and intrathecally) was comparable with levobupivacaine and ropivacaine but significantly shorter than with bupivacaine. Epidural 0.75% levobupivacaine and bupivacaine showed more enduring motor block than ropivacaine. CONCLUSIONS: Levobupivacaine, given epidurally or intrathecally, produces longer lasting antinociceptive action than ropivacaine at equivalent concentrations and similar motor blocking effect at lower concentrations in both epidural and intrathecal administrations. Levobupivacaine-induced prolongation of the tail-flick latency is comparable to that of bupivacaine, as is motor blocking effect at higher concentrations. The possibility of significant differential block with levobupivacaine compared with bupivacaine warrants further study.
Common commercial strain male broilers aged 14 days were intratracheally inoculated with 0.2 ml of 1.2 x 10(6) colony-forming units of Escherichia coli in nutrient broth and kept in a cool environment during the experiment. Ascites was produced in five surviving and two dead birds out of 50 but not in 50 mock-infected control birds. Among the 40 survivors that were infected, the erythrocyte packed cell volume (PCV) of the 10 birds with pericarditis was the same as in 21 grossly normal birds, although that of the four birds with enlarged right ventricle (RV) was high. The pericarditis caused by E. coli septicemia was not the primary cause of ascites. However, the PCV was high in some of the survivors with an enlarged RV without pericarditis, indicating overload due to the lung lesion. These data suggested that some of the birds with an enlarged RV, caused by supplying blood that was insufficiently oxygenated for the body size, suffered from ascites.
Common commercial strain male broilers were intratracheally inoculated with 0.3 ml of fluid containing 10(3.7) embryo infective doses of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) at 14 days of age and 7.5 x 10(6) colony-forming units of Escherichia coli at 18 days of age. Ascites was detected in 15 out of 100 infected birds, which was significantly higher than in a control group of 100 mock-infected birds (P < 0.01). Some parabronchi were blocked by copious exudate containing heterophils and fibrin in the infected birds at 22 days of age although these findings were not seen in the infected birds at 35 days of age or in birds with ascites. The erythrocyte packed cell volume and right ventricle/total ventricle (RV/TV) ratio of birds with ascites were higher than in birds without ascites. The RV/TV weight ratio for the infected group at the age of 35 days was higher than that of the control group. No IBV or E. coli were recovered from the ascitic birds. These findings suggest that these infectious agents induce ascites in the broilers, and then disappear until the birds suffer from ascites.
Feed restriction was attempted for the control of mortality at broiler farms. Respiratory signs were observed in both restricted-feed flocks and fully fed flocks, but they were less severe in the restricted-feed flocks. The death rate in the fully fed flocks began to rise at the age of 4 wk but did not do so in the restricted-feed flocks. Mortality in the restricted-feed flocks was significantly lower than in the fully fed flocks aged from 3 to 7 wk. The economic performance with restriction feeding was better than that with full feeding as a result of improvements in viability and feed conversion rates. Feed restriction appeared to be beneficial in decreasing the death losses.
